My favorite in this area is El sol de Mexico.
Its on Texas way down in Bryan I believe at the intersection with MLK.
They have really good fajitas. Not really the texmex type of mexican food you are looking for but to me it is better than any other place around here.
Fajita paradillas is one of my favorite things to eat. The beef are really good. Shrimp and chicken pretty good.

Knowing spanish is a plus, but I dont and it still works everytime.

I have been to many mexican food restaurants in BCS, looking for that good old SA taste, and I would recommend Papa Perez in downtown Bryan.

p.s. barring your car getting broken into, it does not get better than Franco's in SA

Rosa's Cafe and tortilla factory is a chain that started in San Angelo. It is on University drive.

Actually, Rosa's started in the MAF/ODS area by a guy by the name of Bobby Cox. Angelo was one of the first towns he expanded to.

He also started Taco Villa and sold it for $$$$$.

The guy has the Midas touch.

Its probably a sin to admit it on this thread - but I've killed my fair share of "combination - red sauce".

EMc, you're wrong.

The first Rosa's opened in San Angelo in 1983. Bobby Cox bought it in 1995 and expanded it from 5 locatons to 21.

I had no idea that Rosa's started in San Angelo. The things I learn from Texags!

MEAg09- Ok, in the 37+ years I lived in Angelo I missed that fact.

Do you know what was the original business in the building the first Rosa's opened in? Also, tell me the second location in Angelo.

I had never paid much attention to who owned it until in the 90's. I knew Bobby's nephew was running the the one on Sherwood Way, new there were several in MAF area so I made an assumption.

The first Rosa's opened 4 years before I was born, so I don't know occupied the building first. I do remember eating there (and Taco Bueno over by the junior high) as a small child back when I lived in Robert Lee. I moved to Midland when I was 8, and suddenly there were Rosa's everywhere. And then it followed me to school. I love Rosa's.

I really missed the San Angelo Mexican food when I was in SD. The tortillas at Rosa's cannot be beat.

As far back as I can remember the first Rosa's was on sunset across from Red Lobster and the Mall. The second one was down on Bryant till they shut them both down and opened up on sherwood way.

c-jags- Correct. Monterrey House was the first tenent of the building on Sunset across from the mall.

If I remember correctly they closed both to open the one on Sherwood Way.

I never found any Mexican food that could compare to SA in CS or Bryan. I still tried weekly though

I make sure to get my fix while at home though

p-wonk... It will be Christmas time until I get my SA fix of Tex-Mex.

Closest thing we have here in TN is an Abuelos in Chattanooga and it is just fair compared to Angelo.

What about Los Nortenos (I think that is the name) in Bryan? It is real close, at least their enchiladas were...)

To make it related to the thread, eating in San Angelo.

Back in Wall for the weekend. It has been quite a while since I had been able to eat out in San Angelo. Had to choose a steak place, so I had "scrapes" at Twin Mountain. Great super tender beefy tasting steaks. I still will miss Zentner's on Sherwood way.

if you're out at wall (which is obviously a larger area than town) did you see if the ole gin had opened back up? I'm from there but hadn't been in town for some time.

Bren,
I hope you mean "Scraps" and not "Scrapes"! The scraps at Twin Mountains is delicious. I've never had the scrapes! (Sorry, couldn't resist)

LOL
You know how it is, after you eat all you can, it is really hard to get the spelling knob turned to the correct channel.

The Gin didn't seem to be open although there was a different name on it "Andrews Steak House"???

That deal at the Ol' Gin is a shame. Was great when it opened, but changed hands and wasn't the same and that was back in '04 before I moved.

As far as steaks now in Angelo, Twin Mtn or the old Margret Heinens are about the best.

Won't eat at that itt owned Zentner's Daughter.

I absolutely hate it that the San Angelo Club holds their meetings there now.....

EMc I agree about ZD. It just isn't the same in more ways than one; ownership, food, and principle. Out of respect for Dad I do eat there with him as he still likes to go there.

I am not sure but I believe my roommates and I started the Wall America saying in '71. Because no one knew where the heck it was and we just wanted people to remember it verses saying close to Angelo. Unfortunately my Wall TT classmates started using it also.

Hey BrenTex, Mrs.EMc77 was in Angelo for father's day last month and brought back a case of Mrs. Rios Tortilla chips and 30# of Mikilik sausage! Chips are almost gone..... (you can't get good chips in TN.)

I live in the Metroplex now and haven't found anything that compares to SA Tex-Mex. Good luck.

HKP- Don't let the folks from dirty SA or Houston hear you say that. They think WT is just good for sand and cactus.

They don't know what they are missing.

Mikilik sausage!! Harvey, Mike and crew do a great job don't they. Unique recipe that is also used at the St Ambrose Picnic since Harvey is in charge of sausage making for it (or used to be). We and the rest of the family do the same and bring it to the four corners of the states.

Bren- They also will sell you their seasoning mix which is great on any meat!!!

Add a little Charcoal House steak finger sauce and what a meal!

i took my wife to the little bar they sell it out of and she just stared at me and said she's not going in. I asked her if she liked the sausage that my parents cook when they grill. she said yeah that stuffs great. i replied then get your butt out of the car with the money and come in here.

great stuff.

It didn't so bad many years ago when my Grandpa would go there when in Angelo to get a cold beer. If you didn't know what is there, you wouldn't stop. Harvey puts the money into the product or maybe he is just plain tight!!

Grandma Mikilik was in church last Satuday when we there were in Wall. She was in her wheelchair and had her usual smile and laugh. She and one of her brothers are the last of that generation. A generation that started out in horse and buggys and ending in the space, amazing.
