My husband and I are headed to the Abilene area for the weekend were curious as to places to stay, things to do, etc.

We're going to Albany to eat at the Beehive Saturday night, and have reservations to eat at the Perini Ranch steakhouse Sunday night.

Any suggestions for lodging, entertainment? We plan on going to the Abilene Zoo on Sunday.

Thanks!

there are several really good B&Bs in and around Buffalo Gap, google Buffalo Gap TX B&B and you'll see them. Elm Creek and Fairy Tale are a couple I know about, and I'd recommend either.

If you're more the hotel type, in south Abilene there are two good ones that are 15 minutes from BG. Hilton Garden Inn and Elegante Inn and Suites are on Ridgemont Drive behind the mall, one block west of Buffalo Gap Road.

If you have time in Abilene, Frontier Texas is a must see http://www.frontiertexas.com/ then drive down the street a couple of blocks and do the Grace Museum http://www.thegracemuseum.org/ and then the NCCIL http://www.nccil.org/. The 12th Armored Division Museum is also nearby http://www.12tharmoredmuseum.com/

A trip downtown to do all of that means you'll need to find Harolds BBQ at 1305 Walnut, amazing BBQ. My favorite place downtown is the Cypress Street Cafe http://www.cypress-street.com/ and they are doing breakfast now.

Rocky Top, please tell me you're eating one of those Beehive CFS, the ones that lap over the edge of your plate......I'm on call this w/e and cant leave town to go do it myself, so I'll just have to live vicariously through you...

excellent suggestions mr Squid
couldn't have done better myself....

ps - Cypress Street breakfast is a fail. Brian says it was not worth it, shut down as of a week or two ago.

so breakfast suggestions would have to include The Dixie Pig - but don't know if they are open on Monday - holiday

had lunch at Harold's yesterday, good as always and crowded with his recent publicity

well I hate that for Brian, but it does make sense. I never saw many folks around that time of day for them.

Harold deciding to stay open for supper was pretty cool, huh?

Had a great time in Albany, Abilene, and Buffalo Gap.

At the Beehive, I had the red snapper and my husband had the bone-in prime rib- medium rare. Both were delicious! Really cool place and I hope to go back there really soon! Albany was a beautiful town as well.

We made it to the Zoo in Abilene and had a good time. We didn't have time for much else, but we plan on making another trip where we can go to Frontier Texas and the other museums.

Perini Ranch steakhouse was excellent as well. Very tender, well-marbled ribeyes, although a tad overcooked, but our waitress got us a free dessert because of it. We ordered medium-rare and got medium, so it wasn't burnt or anything. Great service, great food.

We did a quick drive-through of Abilene State Park outside of Buffalo Gap and are planning a camping trip later in the summer.

Beautiful part of the state and a great change from Hereford....

Next time try to catch the Jacob's Dream sculpture on the east side of the ACU campus, particularly at dusk. Hard to describe, but it's pretty impressive.

that is a neat place just to stop and sit. The bride and I usually do the 2 mile trail around the campus every Saturday morning and end up there....

Don't tell people about Albany. We have too many city folks during hunting season, we don't need them the rest of the year.

Sorry dead zip. I really loved your town and am trying to convince my husband we should move there. We just don't know what kind of jobs we'd get

dont let him fool ya, Rocky Top. Albany loves, and needs, city folks. They spend megabucks advertising the shopping, hunting and Fandangle. They even have a billboard in Abilene reminding us that its much closer than Fredericksburg.....

Yeah, I'm just yanking your chain. I reserve most of my loathing for one particular group of Fort Worth guys who hunt down the road from the homestead.

Next time check out the old jail art museum if you missed it.

I do hate that sign in Abilene though. God help us if we start to resemble F-berg or Kerrville.

We are definitely NOT city folks. We're both in the beef cattle field of work and we both love to hunt. So..... who's gonna host us for a hunt in the fall?

know what you're talking about deadzip...we had some doctors that hunt a place down between Moran and Putnam every year. Throw trash wherever they are standing, leave shotgun shells on the ground, just general pigs. They're in for a little surprise when they call for the lease this year.

I might be guilty of depositing a beer can or two up and down 880 in my younger days also but at least I'm not a doctor losing a lease.

Now we just leave cow crap on the road when we drive them down to the pens.

I miss Albany. I guess Fandangle is right around the corner, which makes the awesome town even better.

I'm guessing you are in it.

Back in the day, I started with Square Dancing, moved up to Huppie High, then in college went back for oil rig worker and finally was a saloon cowboy who got in the brawl. I worked production crew in high school. Best summer job ever.

A little bit of trivia - my oil rig crew in '88 or '89 (at least according to Margie Bray and Luann George) was the first to drop our overalls up on the rig when the spotlight hit us during the final Saturday performance. Luann skipped a few beats on the organ from laughing, and the singers on the stage struggled to finish the song. It has become somewhat of a tradition ever since.

No, I haven't been in it in a decade.

Oh, and when Luann skipped those beats she was probably just lighting a cigarette.
