Wow--hadn't heard that. One of my favorite authors. My sister worked at an office adjacent to his in San Angelo about 30 years ago. He was a true gentleman. I wanted to give one of his books (can't remember which one) to a friend of mine once, and my sister got his home number for me. I called him, told him who I was and what I wanted. He couldn't have been nicer.
I first knew of him when he was the agricultural editor for the Standard-Times, and then after college, I guess, I started reading his books. He was well-respected among the 4H/FFA crowd when he was working for the paper.
The second sentence in this was "One of my favorite authors." Even though I can't really claim I knew him, I think "one of my favorite people" is more complete.
