I've worn boots most of my life, the most comfortable pair I've ever owned are the pair I'm wearing now, Luccheses. And I bought them at Cavenders.

That said, my retirement present to myself in a few years is going to be a pair of handmades from Leddys in San Angelo.

The best idea is going to Cavender's.

last pair I bought was in Colorado City at Wood's boots. Still one of the largest selections anywhere.

custom? M.L.Leddy's in San Angelo. Best in the country no doubt, although there are a lot of other great boot shops in texas.

AG1996- You are spot on. I just got last month a new pair of custom maroon Elephant from Leddy's in Angelo. Have only worn their boots since mid '70s. Still am wearing a pair of Chocolate Elephant that went thru 2 or 3 bonfire builds.

They are about a year behind on custom orders and pricy, but will last you forever.

None of this throw away Justin BS.

Another vote for Leddy's. They take about a year to make a pair. They also carry about 300 pair pre-made in San Angelo and around 800 in Ft. Worth. If you're lucky you can find a good fitting pair off the shelf and save the year's wait.

Off the shelf: Wood's Boots. Colorado City and Midland. ENORMOUS Selection in Colorado City. Go check out the discount room in the back.

Custom: Leddy's in San Angelo or Beck's in Amarillo.

Personally, I wear Olathe boots. Tony L's are good, too. Double H makes a nice western looking steel toe. Double H is the 1st bootmaker I've ever seen make a square-toed steel toe.

Leddy's is well known and great, another custom maker is Mercer's
http://www.jlmercerboots.com/

As EMC said it is worth getting a custom pair, you will pass them on to your grandkids.

Most of my shelf boots have come from Wood's in CC.

I will second Mercer Boots. Great bootmakers. I am waiting on my second pair right now (9 month wait). I am still wearing my first pair from them and they are going on 6 years now with one resoling. My Brother in Law also has a couple pairs from them. The prices are great for handmades also.

I think Mercer's made/gave a set of boots to Jackie in the '80's. There was some Aggie connection back then, but I forget what it was.

Both makers are good. I just like the Leddy boots best. Have known the both sides of the Leddy group, Dale, and Jim Franklin since the early '70's. Grand kids are still running both locations!

I definately recommend going to the bootmaker's store rather than going to a shop like Cavendar's to buy your boots. It's just more exciting and personal that way. There are great places all over West Texas to find great bootmakers. In El Paso alone there's like 10, Tony Lama's and Luchese's coming first to memory.

Hey! I’m in Marfa right now, on vacation. Just saw your signed book in the bookstore, and thought that you must have come through on a tour. Didn’t realize you lived here! I’m one of the owners of The HIdeout, an improv theater in Austin, TX. Thought I’d say hi.

Price is very dependent on what you request but at a minimum expect to spend over $1000. I ordered a pair for my son last Dec and they will not be ready until November. Custom boots require patience I guess.

c-jags- my maroon elephant ran a grand and a half. That was pricing in December of '08. (last time I got to Angelo).

Most comfortable boots I have owned.

maybe if you'd move back from that godforsaken land in the east it wouldn't have to have been Dec of '08 since you'd been there last

I think me likes the climate and scenery here very much.....

Can visit family as needed.

Don't have to worry about 90+degree days for 100 days every summer.

She is counting the hours for the year to be over. Hard group of kids and parents this year.

She will survive, but I had forgotten about how worn down she gets at the end of the year.

She did get tenure this year though. If she last 7 more years she can draw a small retirement from TN too. With the way our 401's are going will need it.

I am flying home on 6/12 for a week to visit her dad and family. She is looking forward to it, except for the temperatures.

Leddy's

They will customize them just about anyway you want. It takes a little under a year as noted but it is well worth the wait. Mine are A&M customized.

I have a pair of Leedy's full quil with calf uppers. (dont like the soft uppers, want them a little stiffer) 6 rows of stitching and an aTm logo. with tax about $1800 bucks. No pair of shelf boots could ever compare. I ordered anohter pair when I picked these up. took a little over a year to get the first pair. I am betting on the same for the second pair.

I know this thread is old, but I know the Aggie connection at Mercer Boots. Mitch Robertson '71 was a punter/TE for the Aggies. His in-laws are the Mercer's. Mitch came to San Angelo and tried to run the boot business for a while in the early 80's. I have a couple of pairs of boots that he made.

I also have a couple pair of Leddy boots. Custom made boots are the way to go, if you wear boots all the time. My maroon full quill ostrich fit like a glove. I have a pair of chocolate elephant that I wear practically every day.

I had forgotten about Mitch. That was the connection. Just getting too old to remember.

The Mercer's no longer own Mercer boots but the name is retained. Although another Aggie (Lindsey Cranek) owns/runs it now. Last I checked, she will do block aTm free on tops.
