Steak/Nicer - Twin Mountain, the wharf (seafood) Miss Hatties, Zentners (little overrated but not bad at all)

Mexican - henry's fuente's cafe downtown, franco's on MLK. (You may get shot on the way but it's worth it, best texmex in angelo and that's saying something)

buger - charcoal house, angelo burger co (if it's still around)

dang it. this makes me miss angelo immensely.

I agree with the above post and would add Panchito's at the Paseo. Franco's is awesome, but isn't very big. They also own Western Skies, which is on North Chadbourne. Western Skies serves the same Mexican food as Franco's, plus they serve great steaks. My son-in-law is from Kansas City, and he thinks he knows steaks. He says the best steak he's ever had has been at Western Sky. Whenever he goes there, he gets steak and an additional order of cheese enchiladas. Awesomeness!

If you want to say what area you will be staying in, we can give you directions to any of the above places. Trying to find your way around San Angelo on your own can be difficult!

highly rated on reviews so we stopped at the Road Runner Burger joint over by the university - well worth the stop. Great tasting burgers and cold beer.

i think road runner burgers is actually what used to be Angelo Burger Co. They may have moved out of there to somewhere else

pretty good... but i only ate there a few times after it changed ownership. was great when i worked at ASU.

* edit... but they didn't have beer. that would have ruined me during college.

Thanks for the replies. I'm staying at the Fairfield on Knickerbocker. I've eaten at the Wharf before and liked it. I need to try one of those Mexican places, or both.

These are the easiest ways I can think of to explain. There are back roads that locals use, but are more difficult to explain.

Western Skies - take Knickerbocker to 87 (Bryant/Abe/Koenighim depending on location/direction of travel). It's the only one-way streets in Angelo. Turn left on 87 and take through town until you get to the light at 19th street. Turn right and go until the light at N. Chadbourne (I think it's the second light). Turn left. Western Skies will be on the right around 22nd Street.

Franco's - follow about directions until you are on 19th Street. Turn left at the next light (MLK). Franco's will be on the right about 3 blocks down.

Henry's - from your hotel, get on Loop 306 heading west. Take the Sherwood Way exit. Turn right on Sherwood Way. I would guess it's about 2 miles down Sherwood Way on the right. You will go through at least a couple of lights. There's construction on Sherwood Way, so be careful.

Panchito's - Get on 87 going North as instructed above. At the light on Washington, turn right. When you get to the light at N. Chadbourne, turn left to Avenue D. Turn right, and Panchito's is on the left. It and its parking lots are bordered by Chadbourne, Avenue D, and Oakes.

Let us know what you try & what you think.

I've been going to Henry's on Sherwood for the past several years and finally stopped going last year after the previous 3 trips resulted in horrible food and terrible service. I realize the restuarant is large and can get crazy on weekends but it was beyond lousy. I'd suggest you try another place.

Monday Dinner - Fuentes Downtown - Typical Tex-Mex but the chips weren't packaged and the salsa was tasty. Pretty cool atmosphere.

Tuesday - went to Franco's for breakfast taco (called burritos everywhere except Austin) but they weren't open at 0730. Got one at Ilianas, serviceable. Had lunch at Whataburger.
Dinner at Cork and Pig (Knickerbocker) - the Margharita pizza was very good, good Sangiovese wine. Had kind of an Austin feel.
Going to Diego's Burrito in the AM.

San Angelo is a pretty cool little town and much bigger than I thought. Lots of new reinvestment areas. I never could find a menu for Miss Hatties. Wanted to go to Float 404 and Peasant Village, maybe next time.

I won't get to Angelo again until the week before Christmas this year. Will have been 2 years.......

From what I recall, Henry had just gotten too big. When he was on N. Chadbourne in the late 70's- 80's, was good.

I like Chilangos too. Darker sauce on the enchiladas and great Chile reallanos.(sp).

Western Skies for Steaks is the best.

Man, I am hungery now......

EMC77 - hate to tell you this, but Chilango's is closed!

AggieJenna's posts on this thread were made by me - I didn't realize she had used my computer & was still signed in on Texags. We are from San Angelo, but no longer live there.

Closed, Tell me it ain't so....

Anyone know where Hector and the extended Zapata clan went?

Is Mejor still open? Didn't like it that much, but the same people....

Mejor is now Paula Sues and it didn't exactly look like a hopping place.

Well that just bites it......

Will have to make it a point to hit all my favorite places in December, lest they not be there the next time I make it west of the 100th Parallel.....

77...

Hector could not handle it and Ray is now a Bail-bondsman...

PS: Best Mexican food in town right now is Pisanos....It is where Pomar had his last place (before his divorce) and before he opened his Austin-like disaster called the Blue Agave.

Well, I guess I can see where too much of the Zapata clan could cause issues for Hector. But shoot, he ran Chilangos for several years, successfully, it seemed to me.

Blue Agave? Guess that was after I headed to the hills in '05.

Oh well, time changes things.

I still remember a Burger Chef at the K-Mart Plaza.....

How about K&N Rootbeer stand over by the Fort?

Remember that one?

I'm president of the San Angelo A&M club, and I hate to say, I've got no clue whatsoever where Pisanos is. Blue Agave is very much an Austin type joint. It would have worked I think if they hadn't fired Jerry (original executive chef) who trained in Austin. Jerry had planned on a very nice evening menu, but thats history now as he's moved away. I know its past your trip, but my local recs are as follows.

The Grill
Cork & Pig
Armentas
Fuentes
Francos
Panchitos
Sealy Flats - not nearly as good as it was when Shanna was still there, but still pretty decent with Mike ONeil running the show. Great entertainment in the evenings!

River Valley- BEST lunch in town, never been there for dinner.

Wharf
Been told Peasant Village is good, but I've never been there.

No love for Mr. T's Deli? Make a mean chicken salad sandwich.
EMc77

Forgot about Mr.T's... I liked Armenta's too, but like Chilango's better.

Well, if Francos will stay open along with his Western Skies, I should make it....

For those of you who miss Shakey's Rojo's, go to Rooster's! They have RoJos like Shakey's used to make! I miss the old Shakey's - the entire buffet - but the RoJo's were my favorite part. It's nice to see at least I can get my potato fix again.

By the way, Rooster's is in the old KFC building between Sherwood Way and Beauregard, near the Village Shopping Center.

Actually, once Robert took over at T's it has not been the same...Higher prices and smaller portions.

Here is the list:

Best Burger: Roadrunners

Best Mexican: Pisanos (located where the old Twin Sisters and Chilangos use to be)

Best Lunch Buffett: River Terrace (Chef Earl use to cook for Jerry Jones and company)

Best Steak: (Hate to say this) The Grill

Best Pizza: Cork and Pig

Best Sandwiches: Peasant Village (Ask Jason for the Texas Ruben w/Japs, Hot Mustard and Pepper sauce)

Best Pizza Rolls: Double Daves...Just b/c it reminds me of $5 Wild-n-Wooly Wednesday's on Jersey Drive...They were insane to let college kids in for all you can eat and drink for $5!!

That is all I can think of for now....Would be interested in other ones I cannot think of at the moment.

C-jags, our deal was when all of Mrs.EMc77's family was in town at Christmas we would go get a car load of pizza, rojos, etc for dinner and late snacks. Her family would open gifts on Christmas eve, so a good time was had by all.

I miss that mucho..... too!

+1

Also, if you are in the mood for something totally different then check out The Silo House http://innattheartcenter.com/ It's part of the Chicken Farm Art Center.

I believe they are open Thur-Sat and prepare 4-course meals for around $30 or so. Very quaint and good food.

I see you are an aquatic scientist (or at least play one on TexAgs)...may I suggest you try this the next time in Angelo:

http://sanangelotexas.org/index.asp?Type=GALLERY&SEC={BAB308B7-7C26-424C-AA44-6A257D925E6B}

It's actually a pretty rare place that most don't apprecaite as much as they should (or don't know about)
