My BF and I are looking to head to Santa Fe this week - leaving from Round Rock tomorrow around noon. I think we are going to head through the panhandle on the way there and back through marfa, etc on way back to houston.

Are there any good places to stay or things that one must do in the south plains / panhandle area. I bought a travel book that indicates a couple restaurants, but thought I would check here.

As for lodging, I would hope to find something that has a little character - not a cheesy days inn, super 8, holiday inn, etc.

As for restaurants, like unique places. I consider myself a foodie and like to enjoy the cuisine of the area (assume here it will be good stakes like at Cagels in Lubbock)....

Abilene area may not fit in your timeline
But
Perini Ranch has a bed and breakfast along with a pretty great place to eat

Abilene area is my specialty as well, so if your not headed that way, then I probably can't help. And it would be a pretty short drive from Roundrock for an overnight stay. At any rate, the Beehive in Downtown Abilene on Cedar, El Fenix on South 1st and Harold's BBQ on Walnut are all excellent places to eat. And for my money La Popular and Hernandez Bakeries are two of the best places in the state to grab some breakfast tacos.

Santa Fe- Pasquals for Breakfast. Get there before they open or you will have an even longer wait.......

Il'vincino for wood fired pizza and micro brew.

One of my favorite cities.

Is the Beehive in Abilene as good as the original in Albany? Also, how about the brewpub on Cypress Street?

Beehive in downtown Abilene is excellent, but the Albany location is beyond excellent. Had prime rib for supper over there a couple of weeks ago...unbelievable. Always worth the trip.

Cypress St Station brewpub is a wonderful addition to downtown Abilene. I run by there once a week or so. He's now got some TV's with sports running in the bar and he's changed up the menu to make it a little more bar friendly. Still has most of the restaurant's favorites. Really good beer too.

Thanks! I agree about the Beehive in Albany. Since we're going to Perini Sat. night, I wanted something a little different for Friday night. Cypress Street it is!
