If anyone is interested, I thought I might try to do a scoring update every Friday/Saturday for some of the games of note, and maybe keep a little discussion going as the season progresses.

Little SWC scores:
Permian dominates again, 42-17 over Amarillo Tascosa
Abilene High falls to 0-2 after a 42-16 drubbing by Lubbock Monterey
Midland Lee also drops to 0-2 with a 20-13 loss to Wichita Falls Rider (a 4A school, mind you)
Midland High falls to El Paso Coronado, 39-23
Odessa High easily defeats Wolfforth Frenship 38-15
Abilene Cooper: OFF

Permian has rolled through their first two games of the season, but the other two perennial competitors (Lee and AHS) are winless.

4A scores of note:
Stephenville 53, Azle 0
San Angelo Central 31, Big Spring 17
Hereford 33, Snyder 29
Sweetwater 24, Brownwood 21 (Sammy Baugh's number was retired at this game)

3A:
Abilene Wylie 21, Iowa Park 7
Clyde 18, Graham 14 (They might be calling for Brad McCoy's head up in Young County if he can't find his winning ways he had at Jim Ned)

2A/1A:
Ballinger 28, Brady 0
Coleman 49, Winters 7
Post 63, Merkel 14
Cisco 40, Seymour 7
Sterling City 31, Roby 6

And.........the Stamford Bulldogs win on homecoming, defeating the HATED Hamlin Pied Pipers by a score of 35-28. Nothing warms my heart more than a Stamford victory over that white-trash crowd from the west side of Jones County.

This is all coming from the West Texas-wide scores page on the Abilene Reporter News' website (www.gofridaynight.com). Feel free to add your own scores, or let me know if you want me to track down any others on a weekly basis.

Merkel surprised me, sure thought the move down would help them. Sweetwater looks solid, I'm afraid my Wylie Bulldogs will have to settle for 2nd in district this year....

Greenwood renews the Crane rivalry with a dominating 41-0 win.

Crane's QB went down on the first play of the game, but G-wood's been playing without their star QB since the first scrimmage. I have fond memories of beating up on the Cranes. Glad to see that the current generation of Rangers gets to have the same experience.

nice idea, but show Albany some love on your list, even though they lost.

Ranger 13, Albany 7

Sorry about that. For some reason, they weren't on the main scores page on the ARN website, so I guess I assumed they were off like Anson and Haskell.

I'd like to know what generation you are from......my generation of Cranes never lost to Greenwood, and those generations around me handled the Rangers pretty well.

I graduated in 98. Crane stomped us my junior year (we were horrible in 96 - terrible senior leadership), but my senior year was a different story.

We were 0-2 in district at the time (lost to C-City in 4-OT's, and then Kermit of all teams). We then stunned Crane 30-10, won at Sonora, and beat Big Lake to take the playoff spot that everybody assumed Crane would have. Then in basketball, we beat Crane at home to get into the playoffs and keep Crane out (Sonora was district champ, I think).

Crane/Greenwood was my favorite district rivalry in high school (Alpine was a great rivalry too, but they were out of district). I'm glad they're playing each other again.
WestTexasAggie98
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm glad to see them playing again as well. In my time both the football and basketball games were very intense, with us getting the better part of Greenwood in football, and Greenwood getting the better part of us in basketball.

Judging by your username, I'm assuming you graduated from Crane in 94. Is that about right? Back then, we were always pretty average, and Crane was routinely beating us. Greenwood turned the corner right after you graduated, and has made the playoffs 10 out of 12 years, I think.

Too bad Doege left Crane, or they would have been really nasty this year in 2A.
WestTexasAggie98
How long do you want to ignore this user?
True, but you have to play with what you got. The Cranes should still make a showing in the playoffs, however, they certainly won't go as deep.

Frenship beat Odessa High and Midland Lee beat Rider.

That's what I get for trusting the Abilene Distorter-News to report the scores accurately, I should have known better. I just looked, and they still have the scores the same as they did on Friday night.

I knew that Rider-Lee score sounded strange. Getting beat by a 4A school is grounds for getting a coach run out of town in Midland.

WestTxAg06
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Okay, here are the scores that are listed as final right now. Maybe the Abilene Distorter-News is a little more accurate than it was last weekend:

5A
Euless Trinity 40, Odessa Permian 14 (Permian drops its first game of the year)
Amarillo Tascosa 17, Odessa High 7
Mesquite 35, Abilene 20 (holy cow, AHS is now 0-3)
Lubbock Monterey 24, Midland Lee 10
Midland High 27, San Angelo Central 7
Temple 26, Abilene Cooper 14

4A/3A
Abilene Wylie 23, Graham 6 (Brad McCoy may have to move in with his son down in Austin if he doesn't start winning some games for the Steers)
Decatur 40, Sweetwater 26
Early 24, Clyde 6

2A/1A
Ballinger 41, Coleman 0
Hamlin 24, Cross Plains 0 (gag)
Haskell 14, Albany 13 (yuck)
Anson 39, Quanah 7 (eghh)
Hawley 13, Grape Creek 6
Menard 34, Winters 14
Ranger 47, Miles 7
Eden 54, Paint Rock 6

Stamford plays Baird tomorrow evening on Baird's homecoming. Hopefully the 1-1 Bulldogs and their newly installed double-wing offense will play spoiler.

6-Man
Throckmorton continues its unbeaten streak, rolling Crowell by a 53-0 margin.

Those are all the scores I have right now. I'll try to get the rest from TexasPrepExtra.Rivals.com in the morning.

WestTxAg06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yes, it definitely was a bad night for the Little SWC boys. Permian drops to 2-1 with a loss to a defending state champion, which is nothing to be ashamed of, but Midland Lee and Abilene High do not look good AT ALL.

First of all, a couple of corrections from scores that the ARN screwed up last night:

Midland High beat San Angelo Central 41-10, not 27-7.
Hawley lost to Grape Creek 22-19, they didn't win 13-6.
Early beat Clyde by a 24-6 margin, not 23-6.

Now, the scores that I didn't have last night:
3A/4A
Stephenville 24, Wichita Falls Rider 15
Ft. Stockton 14, Andrews 7
Monahans 26, Midland Christian 21
Marlin 22, Snyder 14
Hereford 41, Big Spring 34
Brownfield 14, Lamesa 0
Midland Greenwood 35, Lubbock Estacado 8
Crane 25, Iraan 7
Kerrville Tivy 41, San Angelo Lakeview 6
Levelland 12, Denver City 8

2A/1A
Cisco 48, Merkel 0 (0-2 for the Badgers in their new 2A classification)
Sonora 28, Colorado City 0
Coleman 21, Rotan 12
Munday 33, Roby 7
Windthorst 28, Alvord 0

And here's a wild and exciting six-man score for you: Woodson trailed Groom 47-20 at the half, but went on a tear in the second half, winning in a 62-59 shootout.

Like last week, let me know which ones I screwed up and if there are any other scores you'd like me to track down.

WTA06- Glad you got San Angelo Central in 5A again...

Them being moved to the district they are in sucks. Lubbuttocks and Amarillo are the pits to have play.

Thanks for the scores, even thought Central apparently is down again this year..

Gentlemen, pardon me for subjecting you to my homerism excitement, but STAMFORD IS 2-1!!!!

Baird let the Bulldogs 15-14 at the half, but a second-half offensive explosion ruined Baird's homecoming, and gave the 'Dawgs a 37-15 victory and a record above .500 for the first time, if my memory serves me correctly, in probably five years.

EMC77, did I miss something? SA Central got out of the Little SWC several years ago, back when it was still District 4-5A. I know that District 4 is now District 3, due to El Paso losing some 5A schools. But as far as I know, Central is still 5A and still in the Lubbock/Amarillo district. I'd like to be wrong, I always enjoyed away games in San Angelo.

Update: checked the UIL webpage, Central is in Dist. 2 (Lubbock/Amarillo) for football, and in Dist. 3 (Midland/Odessa/Abilene) for basketball.

Sorry for the belated nature of these scores. I was home for the weekend watching my Fightin' Stamford Bulldogs come from behind to defeat the Hawley Bearcats 28-14 in the District 5-2A opener, moving the Bulldogs to 1-0 in district and 3-1 overall, equaling our win total for the past three years combined. You might say that folks in Stamford are exciting. We're just looking forward to cracking heads with the clowns from Anson and Haskell and hopefully giving them what they deserve: a big L.

This week opened up district play for some of the larger districts, while other teams got in one final pre-season game, or took the final opportunity for a bye week. On to the scores:

5A:
Abilene High finally breaks into the win column, defeating Denton Ryan, 30-21.
Zach Stewart sets the Little SWC record for passing yards in a game with 453, as Abilene Cooper absolutely destroys Lubbock Coronado, 61-33.
San Angelo Central 28, Odessa High 19
Lubbock Monterey 31, Odessa Permian 28

3A/4A:
Abilene Wylie 14, Wolfforth Frenship 7
Stephenville 28, Aledo 24 (winning on a 40+ yard touchdown pass with only 6 seconds remaining)
Sweetwater wins in a barnburner as they defeat the Big Spring Steers, 59-41.
Brownwood 52, San Angelo Lakeview 7
Snyder 14, Lubbock Cooper 0
Vernon 36, Clyde 25
Midland Greenwood 49, Levelland 14
Lubbock Roosevelt 13, Lamesa 7
Seminole 27, Andrews 23
Anthony 31, Pecos 21
Fort Stockton 39, Fabens 12
Graham 14, Monahans 7

2A:
Stamford 28, Hawley 14
Merkel 20, Coahoma 14
Stanton 22, Anson 14
Haskell 40, Colorado City 13
Coleman 9, Bangs 3
Ballinger 42, San Saba 7
Early 41, Tuscola Jim Ned 21
Cisco 56, Comanche 28
Kermit 13, Marfa 11
Alpine 33, Iraan 25
Crane 26, Midland JV 7
Junction 34, Reagan County 19
Van Horn 42, Fort Hancock 6
McCamey 42, Midland Soph. 15
Wall 27, San Angelo Grape Creek 6
Sonora 35, Ingram Moore 17
1A:
Gorman 20, Ranger 8
Roscoe 49, Baird 26
Rotan 24, Roby 20
Winters 12, Hamlin 0

Six-Man:
In a battle of defending state champions, UIL champ Throckmorton knocks off TAPPS champion, 59-40.
Woodson 57, Knox City 46
Strawn 48, Rising Star 0
Westbrook 56, Blackwell 6
Rule 82, Bryson 34

Abilene Wylie took out the 4A #14 in Frenship...after beating 4A Big Spring last week. This week they have to travel to Wimberly....tough schedule this year, but they're doing fine....

Wylie continues to reload and reload, and reload some more, with never a down year. It's simply amazing, and quite a testament to Hugh Sandifer's coaching prowess. The argument could be made that they have so much success in district because of their size advantage over the surrounding 3A schools, but beating up on 4A teams in non-district shows that they're still an impressive team regardless of their fortunate district alignment.

Abilene Cooper should have made Sandifer an offer he couldn't refuse when they were looking for a new coach this winter.

WestTxAg06,

Thanks for the 6-man scores. Keep them coming! It's been a little while since I played so it's nice to see scores. One thing I miss about being in central Texas is that no one here plays 6-man. Have you got a feel for who will be in contention for the championship this year?

Also, if you see a Grady score and include it then I'd be most appreciative. It's hard to keep up with the alma mater from Austin. Thanks.
WestTxAg06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I'd be glad to keep up with the six-man scores, I really didn't know if anybody but me cared about them, so I'm glad to know you're interested.

I'll make sure and keep up with the Grady scores on week-by-week basis, but here's their scores so far this season:

Week 0: Sanderson 36, Grady 14
Week 1: Grady 63, Whiteface 14
Week 2: Grady 55, New Home 32
Week 3: Grady 59, Trent 14
Week 4: Grady 64, Water Valley 43

As far as who's going to be in contention, I think Throckmorton has a reasonable shot of repeating. They graduated a couple of studs, but they're still pretty loaded. Rule is making some noise, and they've got a really talented quarterback. Woodson is probably capable of going a long way in the playoffs too. And of course, the old standbys like Whitharral, Trinidad, Gordon, and Richland Springs are sure to be in contention.

Darn, I didn't see his combined rankings, I just clicked on the pre-season rankings for D-I and D-II. Some of the contenders I listed were picked highly in the pre-season, but have underperformed.

Splitting six man into two divisions was about the dumbest idea the UIL has ever had, even worse than putting four teams from each 5A district into the playoffs.
agpharm
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I completely agree! What in the world was the UIL thinking???

Thanks for the link Sheik. I remember when Garden City dropped down to 6-man a few years ago. I figured that they would make some noise in the 6-man ranks, but hadn't seen them go deep into the playoffs. Looks like they've got a good squad this year, though.
