District 5-2A
--One week after a frustrating, disappointing, and self-destruction created loss to Coahoma, the Stamford Bulldogs got back on the right track with a relatively easy 32-14 victory over the struggling Merkel Badgers. Merkel drops to 2-4 in district and is officially eliminated from playoff contention (by my calculations). Stamford moves to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in district, and pretty much controls its own destiny for the playoffs. Some other interesting and complicated situations could propel them to the playoffs, but simply enough, with a win over Anson next week, the Bulldogs are in.
--The Big Country Game of the Week turned out to be nothing but a rout. Hawley, after convincing and impressive victories over Merkel and Anson, rolled into Haskell with the chance to upset the district leaders and perhaps set themselves up to win their first ever district football title. Haskell reminded the Bearcats why they came in to the game 8-0 overall and 5-0 in district, winning in a 41-3 rout. Haskell clinches the District 5-2A title, moving to 6-0, while Hawley drops to third place at 4-2 (Stamford holds the head-to-head tiebreaker).
--Anson recovered nicely from being embarrassed and shut out by the Hawley Bearcats last week, routing the hapless and winless Colorado City Wolves, 52-8. At 3-3 in district, Anson sits in a 4th place tie with Coahoma. To even have a shot at the playoffs, Anson must defeat Stamford next week and hope it can win a tiebreaker.
--A missed extra point was the difference, as Coahoma edged Stanton by a 28-27 margin. Stanton drops out of contention at 2-4, while Coahoma sits in the aforementioned tie at 3-3 with Anson. Like Anson, Coahoma needs a win next week and then some help to make the playoffs.

District 3-5A
--Abilene High clinched at least a share of the district title last night, knocking off Abilene Cooper in the crosstown showdown of the Key City, 37-27. At 4-0, the Eagles are the only undefeated team left in the Little SWC. The Cougars drop to 1-3.
--Odessa Permian got the Mojo going last night, destroying the crosstown rival Odessa High Bronchos 46-14. Mojo improves to 3-1, and OHS drops to 1-3.
--The other crosstown battle ended in a 38-21 Midland High Bulldog victory over the Midland Lee Rebels. The Bulldogs improve to 2-2 in district, while Lee moves to 1-3.
As it stands, Abilene High is guaranteed a playoff spot, and by my calculations, Permian is too. Midland, at 2-2, sits in the drivers' seat for the third playoff spot. And since the UIL decided we needed four playoff teams from each district in 5A, the three teams sitting at 1-3 (Lee, Cooper, Odessa) are still in contention for a playoff spot, and it'll probably come down to a tiebreaker like total point scored after the dust settles next wee. Bizarre.

Richland Springs 96, Eden 0: Richland Springs quarterback Tyler Ethridge broke the national six-man football record for career touchdown passes, as his six TD passes last night put him at 151, breaking the previous record of 148. Amazingly enough, he's only a junior, so you can count on him setting the new record at a ridiculous number when he's done. Richland Springs jumped out to a 62-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the mercy rule ended this game at halftime.

Next Saturday, I'll try to have all the playoff teams compiled, and then later in the week, I'll have all the playoff projections.
