Ladies and gentlemen, the Stamford Bulldogs are on a roll. A 45-6 destruction of the Colorado City Wolves runs the Bulldogs' record up 4-1 and 2-0 in District 5-2A play.

Now that my weekly bit of homerism is over, on to the scores:

NOTE: The bigger districts like 5-2A, 15-A, and 16-A are already in the midst of district play, while the 5 and 6 team districts will get fired up next week. Several teams got a final non-district game in, while quite a few took the week off. Once everyone starts district play, I'll try to list the scores on a district by district basis, instead of by classification.

Anybody know a website to check each week's AP rankings? Greenwood was just barely out of the top 10 last week. Just wondering if they cracked it this week. It's just a matter of time, anyway, as it looks pretty likely they'll go 10-0.

WestTxAg06.... when did you graduate from Stamford? My wife and in-laws are from there.

They were visiting and when I told them ya'll one this last weekend they wouldn't believe me, went out and bought a paper jsut to verify it!!

I graduated in 2002.

It's sort of hard to believe that the football program is getting turned around, as bad as it's been the last couple of years. We've already doubled our win total for the last two years combined, and we're only at the halfway point in the season. It's a testament to what a good coach with a good system and an ability to make kids believe in themselves can do.

My wife graduated in '01, small world!

Yeah it's been hard for the school with everything that went on last year w/ the coaching staff. But I'm glad that they're having some success and I hope they keep it up! It says a lot of the kids to go through that crap and of the new coaching staff to get them up for this season.

c-jags, shoot me an email at the address in my profile. I'd be interested to find out who your wife is.

You're right, it does say a lot about the kids. The team was beaten down to the point last year that even when they got close to a couple of wins, they just couldn't close the deal, almost like they didn't believe they could actually do it. And it definitely says a lot about these coaches, too.

Rule and Richland Springs are the favorites to win the sixman Division 1 Title, IMO.

Division 2 is cloudy, but Dell City and Motely Co. seem to be at the top of that list.

Splitting sixman into 2 divisions is not the problem. It is a solution. The problem is the UIL raising the enrollment numbers every year.

Sixman football was invented to give the schools who don't have the numbers to play 11-man ball the ability to compete.

Now, 1A schools drop down every year because they are getting their asses kicked in 11-man ball. There are schools in Division 1 with close to 40 kids out for football, and that is not right.

The division split was the right thing to do.

Well, the Stamford winning streak has come to an end, and it unfortunately came at the hands of the hated Haskell Indians. We were up 10-7 at halftime, but fumbles, interceptions, and a botched snap on a punt killed us, and the Indians pulled away to a 29-10 victory. I think it was a bit of a reminder that all of us in Bulldogland should return to reality and realize that, while we're improving at a rapid pace, we've still got a way to go before the rebuilding process is complete.

On to the scores:
District 3-5A
Abilene High 28, Midland High 19
Odessa High 51, Abilene Cooper 0 (either this Odessa High team is pretty good, or Cooper forgot to come to the stadium last night)

The Bobcats gained 593 total yards of offense, including 363 yards on the ground and 230 through the air. The loss was the first loss at home by the Greyhounds since they switched to six-man football before the 2004-2005 school year.

District 5-2A
One week after a tough loss to district fontrunner Haskell, the Stamford Bulldogs prevailed in a battle with significant playoff implications for District 5-2A, outlasting the Stanton Buffaloes by a score of 17-8. Stanton led 8-7 for most of the game, but a 4th quarter touchdown put the Bulldogs on top and a safety in the waning minutes provided the insurance. Stamford moves to 3-1 in district while Stanton drops to 2-2.

The Abilene Reporter News' Big Country Game of the Week was billed as a slugfest between two physical teams, one that would likely decide the district championship. Well, it was certainly a slugfest. Anson and Haskell played four scoreless quarters, with each defense holding the opposition to near the century mark in total offense. Anson finally blinked first, allowing a touchdown in the first overtime. With the 7-0 win, Haskell puts itself in the district driver's seat at 4-0, while Anson puts itself in a bit of a hole at 2-2.

With a 21-14 victory, Coahoma moves to 2-2 and drops Colorado City to 0-4.

Merkel continues to struggle, as a 47-6 pasting by 3-2 Hawley drops the Badgers to 1-3.

District 2-5A (since it appears we've got some Lubbock folk on this thread)
Amarillo 31, San Angelo Central 13

Abilene High 29, Midland Lee 17: AHS moves to 2-0 as well, the Rebels also fall to 0-2.

Ouch! Grady took it on the chin against Ft. Davis. But they didn't get shut out--made them play all 4 quarters (moral victory).

Tough district with both Ft. Davis and Garden City in there.

District 5-2A
--Stamford pounded out its yards on the ground as usual, gaining 277 yards on 44 rushes, but turnovers were the story for the Bulldogs Friday night. Two interceptions and six fumbles (three lost) were fatal, especially a late 4th quarter fumble that set up a Coahoma touchdown and handed the Coahoma Bulldogs a 34-27 victory. Stamford maintains control of 3rd place in district with a 3-2 record, while Coahoma joins a four-way tie for fourth at 2-3.
--One week after rushing the ball 60 times for an almost unfathomable 594 yards against district doormat Merkel, the Hawley Bearcats bolstered their playoff chances and dealt a serious blow to the post-season hopes of the Anson Tigers. On the strength of 387 yards rushing as a team, the Bearcats clobbered the Tigers 29-0, moving Hawley to 4-1 in district (2nd place) and dropping Anson to 2-3.
--Haskell continues its march to the district title, whipping Stanton 40-21. The Indians, 8-0 overall, move to 5-0 in district and clinch a playoff spot, while the Buffaloes of Stanton join the 2-3 quartet.
--In the district pillow fight, Merkel gets a 29-6 victory and moves to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in district, handing winless Colorado City (0-8, 0-5) another defeat.

The Abilene Eagles were down 21-10 at the half.
Adjustments made at half time did a pretty good job of shutting down Permian. Topped if off with a 20 play 9 minute possession at the end of the 4th quarter, including two 4th down conversions to finish with a 7 yard pass for TD at 20 something seconds left in the game.

Thats the Eagles 14th or 13th consecutive district win.

District 5-2A
--One week after a frustrating, disappointing, and self-destruction created loss to Coahoma, the Stamford Bulldogs got back on the right track with a relatively easy 32-14 victory over the struggling Merkel Badgers. Merkel drops to 2-4 in district and is officially eliminated from playoff contention (by my calculations). Stamford moves to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in district, and pretty much controls its own destiny for the playoffs. Some other interesting and complicated situations could propel them to the playoffs, but simply enough, with a win over Anson next week, the Bulldogs are in.
--The Big Country Game of the Week turned out to be nothing but a rout. Hawley, after convincing and impressive victories over Merkel and Anson, rolled into Haskell with the chance to upset the district leaders and perhaps set themselves up to win their first ever district football title. Haskell reminded the Bearcats why they came in to the game 8-0 overall and 5-0 in district, winning in a 41-3 rout. Haskell clinches the District 5-2A title, moving to 6-0, while Hawley drops to third place at 4-2 (Stamford holds the head-to-head tiebreaker).
--Anson recovered nicely from being embarrassed and shut out by the Hawley Bearcats last week, routing the hapless and winless Colorado City Wolves, 52-8. At 3-3 in district, Anson sits in a 4th place tie with Coahoma. To even have a shot at the playoffs, Anson must defeat Stamford next week and hope it can win a tiebreaker.
--A missed extra point was the difference, as Coahoma edged Stanton by a 28-27 margin. Stanton drops out of contention at 2-4, while Coahoma sits in the aforementioned tie at 3-3 with Anson. Like Anson, Coahoma needs a win next week and then some help to make the playoffs.

District 2-5A
San Angelo Central 28, Lubbock Coronado 14
Lubbock Monterey 45, Amarillo High 31
Amarillo Tascosa 31, Lubbock High 0

District 3-5A
--Abilene High clinched at least a share of the district title last night, knocking off Abilene Cooper in the crosstown showdown of the Key City, 37-27. At 4-0, the Eagles are the only undefeated team left in the Little SWC. The Cougars drop to 1-3.
--Odessa Permian got the Mojo going last night, destroying the crosstown rival Odessa High Bronchos 46-14. Mojo improves to 3-1, and OHS drops to 1-3.
--The other crosstown battle ended in a 38-21 Midland High Bulldog victory over the Midland Lee Rebels. The Bulldogs improve to 2-2 in district, while Lee moves to 1-3.

As it stands, Abilene High is guaranteed a playoff spot, and by my calculations, Permian is too. Midland, at 2-2, sits in the drivers' seat for the third playoff spot. And since the UIL decided we needed four playoff teams from each district in 5A, the three teams sitting at 1-3 (Lee, Cooper, Odessa) are still in contention for a playoff spot, and it'll probably come down to a tiebreaker like total point scored after the dust settles next wee. Richland Springs 96, Eden 0: Richland Springs quarterback Tyler Ethridge broke the national six-man football record for career touchdown passes, as his six TD passes last night put him at 151, breaking the previous record of 148. Amazingly enough, he's only a junior, so you can count on him setting the new record at a ridiculous number when he's done. Tyler Ethridge from Richland Springs is fun to watch. Saw him as a freshman in the state game here at Abilene. Not a big kid, but cool under pressure and a great passer. If you get a chance to watch him and the Coyotes in action, make sure you go.

I love it when the Richland Springs fans all do thier coyote howls. First one fan will start it, and then the whole stands will get into it.

Good stuff, Sheik. With Lubbock being closer to most of the six-man action than College Station, maybe they'll have a playoff game near here.

Did you make it out to Shotwell last night? I just watched the highlights and the postgame interviews on the KTXS website, looked like a great ballgame.

Steve Warren is such a great coach. Bringing him to AHS as an assistant was probably one of the best decisions Gary Gaines ever made.

I was there - 40 yard line
We'll see what Warren says at the booster club meeting on Monday. It was a good game. 21-21 at the half. Again Abilene did a good job of shutting them down the whole game, giving up only a few long yardage plays. Cooper could never string enough together to stay with them. AHS pounded out the yards and did a pretty good job in the second half of holding Cooper to not much. Odessa High this Friday for undisputed district title.

check out the sixmanfootball.com website for playoff locations. Valley at Turkey and Rule both should make playoffs, so there should be some games up near Lubbock.

Please tell me that Richland Springs and Eden played a JV game on Thursday. That is the only reason a score should ever be that lopsided in 6-man football.

I say once you've got them 45'd before half you let Freshman play the rest of the half until it's over. Obviously if a JV game was played, there might not have been any subs to put in there, but if not....

Klondike did this to a hapless Dawson team a couple of years in a row a while back. No JV game, plenty of subs on Klondike's sidelines that never saw the field. Dawson gave them some of that medicine a few years later.

Etheridge never came out of the game and alot of players that were suited up on the sideline didn't see a second of action.

Classless.

That's terrible. And in my mind tarnishes the statistical record obtained. It's one thing to have those stats playing in a competitive game with a team that is able to strike back. But not in a game like that. Just disgusting....

I'll be rooting for someone to knock off Richland Springs in the playoffs.

Thanks for stepping in and handling the playoff matchups, Sheik. I was at home for the weekend, and I'm snowed under with law school assignments this week, but here's what happened in my final district recap of the year:

District 5-2A
--An inability to stop the between-the-tackles running and a momentum-changing safety and a fumble in the second quarter did the Stamford Bulldogs in, sending them home from Anson with a 37-16 defeat at the hands of the Tigers. The Tigers grabbed the final spot in the playoffs at 4-3 in district, while the loss dropped the Bulldogs to 4-3 and handed the tiebreaker to Anson. I was at the game, and as disappointing as it was to miss the playoffs at the hands of our hated rivals, a 6-4 overall and 4-3 district record is quite an accomplishment considering the disastrous recent history of Bulldog football.
--Haskell put the finishing touches on an undefeated season, destroying Coahoma 54-14.
--Hawley secured its second straight (and second-ever) playoff bid with a 42-6 drubbing of Colorado City, who finishes the season winless.
--The drop from Class 3A to 2A didn't treat the Merkel Badgers as well as they hoped this year, finishing with only two wins (both in district. Stanton finished off their season with a 21-0 victory over the Badgers.

District 2-5A
Amarillo Tascosa 35, Lubbock Coronado 20
Lubbock Monterey 28, San Angelo Central 0
Amarillo High 45, Lubbock High 12

Playoff teams: Monterey, Amarillo High, Central, and Tascosa

District 3-5A
--Steve Warren does it again. Abilene High pounds Odessa High 42-0, giving the Eagles another district title with an undefeated run through the competition.
--Abilene Cooper needed a win in the final game of the season to slide in to 3-5A's fourth playoff spot. They came just short, however, in heartbreaking fashion: a 33-30 overtime loss to the Midland Lee Rebels. The victory put Lee in the final playoff spot with a 2-3 record.
--Midland High lost 31-28 to Odessa Permian, but both teams make the playoffs, Permian at 4-1 and MHS at 2-3.

District 1-3A
Clint 35, Ft. Stockton 27
Monahans 52, Anthony 7
Pecos 47, Tornillo 36

Another undefeated district run for Wylie, Sweetwater and Clyde also advance to the postseason

District 7-2A
Ozona v. Kermit (no score)
Reagan County 31, Alpine 19
Crane 50, Van Horn 0

Not too sure about how the district standings ended up, since TexasPrepXtra doesn't have the Ozona score. Ozona appears to have won district regardless, with the remaining two spots going to Alpine, Crane, or Reagan County.

District 6-2A
Bangs 21, Wall 18
Early 31, Ballinger 7
Coleman 26, Tuscola Jim Ned 14

I didn't notice that step in the brackets

Rule vs Happy or Valley will be the game to see next week. That will probably be in the Lubbock area, the eagles will be in Lubbock next week if Amarillo Tascosa beats the El Paso team (and of course if the Eagles beat Weatherford)
