Why do you want to move to this horrible place? The valley is backwards and corrupt, it’s a complete nightmare. With any luck I will be back in Austin before too long. Job market needs to turn around quick.

I work for a bank in the valley.

My condolences, dsvogel. I practiced law in the Valley for ten years and they were ten of the worst years of my life. Everything about the legal system in the valley is corrupt and backwards, and from what I saw, many of the other industries were the same. It's just a nasty, dirty, corrupt place to live and try to raise a family.

I grew up in north Texas and we moved back here to the DFW area in 2006, just in time for my oldest daughter to go to middle school. My 2nd choice was Austin. Hope you get back there soon.

Thanks OldAg. I was born and raised in the valley, and it was ok back in the 80's and 90's, but it seems like once 2000 rolled around, this place just went to crap. It literally is northern Mexico and everyone does as they would in Mexico. With any hope, I can get back to Austin for a little civilization.

Harlingen is ok but they refuse to grow because of politics, Donna is still ghetto and always will be and Weslaco has stayed about the same. There is just no discipline or pride of ownership anymore.

I always said that I'd never come back to the Valley. I lived in Dallas for a year and Houston for four. I ended up falling for a highschool friend (we are now engaged) and I moved back here for her.

All I can say is that the Valley is awesome. Yes, it's corrupt, but that doesn't affect me in the least.

The cost of living is cheap, the city of McAllen is growing (esp. downtown), the weather is great, and the best beach in Texas is down here. I love it.

i moved away for 5 years and i learned that there are places far worse than the valley. i left without looking back and just returned to harlingen this past year for a better paying job and grad school. if you ignore the metropolitan areas, there aren't too many great towns in texas. driving 40 minutes to the nearest grocery store or walmart is never pleasant.

Are you actually saying that the valley is more corrupt than Austin? I believe that their is more money stolen in Austin in a week than a year in the valley.

I work in Austin but live out near Coupland. I hate all the people from Mexico because they simply do not have any respect for anyone or anything. Plus, they can't drive. I swear, all drivers in the valley must have gone to the same place to get their drivers license. Aside from the food, the valley pretty much sucks.

I love the Mexicans as opposed to the self appointed intellectuals that abound in asstin.

Nothing is ever as good as it seems and nothing is ever as bad as it seems. IMO, the Valley was a much better place years ago as compared to now, but it is a far cry from being terrible as some want to paint it. Try living in Beaumont, Abiline, Odessa or some other places as compared to the Valley, that will give you some perspect when comparing Texas. Not to mention that there are a ton of places in the US that make the Valley look like paradise on earth. Sure they are better places, but man o man there are worse places.
