Semi retired and thinking of packing it up and Considering moving to the island. Would like to hear from folks that live there, is it a good place to retire?

Love to bay fish and fly airplanes.

What areas should I look to buy and what kind of money am I going to spend on a modest home.

Island life pros include no traffic, you are never far from where you need to go, good fishing, a nice golf course, good mexican food, good seafood and a modest choice of decently priced restaurants with good quality. The gulf breeze keeps us slightly cooler than the rest of the state. Average price for a home is $175k. Plus we have a municipal airport for your aviation hobby.

Cons involve living in a relatively low income demographic. We don't have any indian restuarants and the asian places are limited. This may have no importance to you, but I'm a huge foodie and it does factor in for me. Other than that I don't have anything to complain about.

If you want to live "in town" I would look at the historical district or there are a few streets in particular I like: Sherman, Cadduceus, Denver, and Woodrow. This area is centrally located just a couple blocks from the seawall. They were high and dry during Ike. Once you go west of 61st St I would say 90% of the areas are great.

The airport is great for a town our size.

We have numerous Asian restaurants.
Fishing-well we are an island.

Look closely at neighborhoods, one or two blocks can make a big difference.

West End- get a canal house, hang your boat & ready for instant use. Airport 10 minutes away.

Close to The Big City if you need to go.

Cons: Having your house destroyed by a large hurricane. That wasn't too fun.

I don't think traffic is a pro...traffic can be a beast during the summer. You have to completely avoid the seawall area.

True, but none of them serve dim sum. Both Pho places are average at best. No korean. The buddha is good, but I think I like it mostly because I grew up eating it. I once lived with a Korean and Filipino. That kind of changed my perspective on Asian food.

Hello Ave O and P. You just get used to avoiding the seawall during the summer. No big deal. Plenty of back streets on the grid.

I've lived in Galveston all of my life, except for the four years in Aggieland of course. I've always lived west of 69th street... I currently live way out west in Pirate's Cove. I can say without a doubt that living out west is the only way to go. There is easy beach access, no traffic, the golf course is right there, and plenty of places to access the bay for fishing. During the winter months you feel like you have the neighborhood to yourself. If you want a relaxed lifestyle then Galveston is the way to go.
