It is south of the Nueces.

Yep the Nueces was at one time the border crossing in early Texas history.

You guys are right, this place really sucks.

Please tell everybody that and discourage them from coming here. Particularly tourists. And fishermen. And hunters.

Us locals want to keep it this messed up.

if you move here, make sure you get a house on the Island. Flour Bluff is one of the few decent schools here. good football team, atleast it was 2 years ago when i went there.

Oh yeah, Flour Bluff is great. Nobody will judge you if you don't ever wear shoes and prefer to walk around shirtless.

huisache has it down pretty well.

There isn't any place better if you are an outdoorsman. I can be bay fishing, fresh water fishing, deer hunting, or bird hunting in 30 minutes from anywhere in town. Throw in the beach activities or other outdoor activities and it's a pretty big plus.

As for the English speaking Hispanics, CC has probably a disproportionately larger base of English speaking Hispanics because most of the Hispanic families around here have been here for many generations and are as assimilated as well as any Irish or German immigrant that are also common. Culturally, there is little difference between most whites and Hispanics in this town. It seems that most immigrants coming from Mexico look elsewhere than CC (comparatively).

Traffic is great compared to other towns. But the streets suck though the city has a lot of work going on with a LOT more to do. It will get better over time.

Food options are worse unless you like Mexican food. Mom and pop shops are literally everywhere and are way better than the chains. Other than that your options are lackluster.

Del Mar is actually a pretty good school and very underrated in my opinion. Yes it is considered a trade school, but it is a better school than most think and the administration is fairly well run. A&M CC is a huge lift to CC in more ways than can be discussed here.

While crime may be high, it s generally more of the "petty" type I think. Theft of a vehicle, quick break-ins, vandalism, that kind of stuff.

The hospitals are great and the public schools are a mixed bag. I would choose carefully where you live or go the private school route of which there are some good ones.

I'm out of the night life scene so no comment there.

There was a comment made that there is nothing to do in CC, which is pattently false. If you make even the tiniest bit of effort, you can find plenty of things to do. I work for a few charities and scheduling events is very difficult because there are so many events vying for weekends. Check any community calendar and you will find things to do nightly.

I didn't see anyone mention the minor league sport teams. Hooks Baseball is starting up and they are tremendous fun and Whataburger Field is fantastic for it's size. Pretty soon the Hurricane Alley Water Park will be opening up next door too.

The city government catches a lot of flak, rightfully so in many cases, but there are SOME good folks down there and some of the citizenry are not exactly the most progress oriented people and can be difficult to deal with.

Corpus sucks. I lived there for 16 years. Grew up there. Unless you care about Cesar Chavez or Selena the city isn't for you. The beaches are trash with trash people on them. The Lexington and aquarium are nice. But you can only go to them so many times. There is no dress code and the people are disgustingly low class. So night life no matter where you go is only one drink away from a stabbing. The roads are full of pot holes. Half of downtown is run down abandoned buildings. The public schools are a bunch of illiterate kids who pride themselves on how thug they are. Was at one point the fattest city in the country and the 2nd dumbest ranked. You need no more from me. Just as a person who grew up there, it's a ****hole

Lived there for a few years. First job out of college was Reynolds Metals. CC was my first experience living anywhere near the coast and we thouroghly enjoyed it. Great weather and lots to do.

Do not go to Walmart on Friday or Saturday nights. That's really the only problem with the place. Wall to wall mexicans for some reason.

The bit about the crime being bad is funny. I was a prosecutor here back in the 80s and the crime rate is way down in comparison.

It may be that the reason people here think there is a lot of crime is because the tv stations are so bad they don't know how to cover anything but crimes and car wrecks and kids going to see the Easter Bunny/Santa, etc.

The media is unbelievably retarded.

The crime rate is low. The gangsters shoot each other occasionally, some liquored up macho man shoots his wife because he loves her so much, an idiot who likes to be on tv robs a store now and then and they cover it. Robberies are a tenth what they were and murders a fourth what they were a couple of decades ago.

The most annoying crime nowadays is the graffiti and that is a pain but a lot of the graffitistas are pretty good artists.

And the Hooks are likely to be the only team in the Astros system to have a winning season this year.

I'm gone, never to return. That's the problem!! Nobody graduates and then goes back to Corpus. And before you argue about that, how do you think Corpus ended up with the ranking a few years back as the 2nd dumbest city in the country next to Fort Wayne Indiana? To sum Corpus up, its a giant welfare cesspool. Anyone who defines the sparkling sh*t hole by the sea as great or any other synonym is A) retarded B)born and raised mexican from there or C)has never been anywhere else.

For our friend the "prosecutor" huisache
http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/tx/corpus-christi/crime/

If you think these rates are good, you are probably about the right intelligence level for a Corpus Christi prosecutor.
Odds of being a victim in Corpus: 1 in 143
In Texas: 1 in 222

I will let everyone else review these charts and see how "good" the crime rate is in Corpus.
And I will reiterate. Corpus=Welfare Cesspool

Ok so should I just jump to the conclusion that Houston must be THAT much more dangerous than corpus ? Throw the hour long commutes and traffic jams in and nearest beach being 45 min away and the caliber of galveston beach...I'll take corpus any day no question.

Even if you consider population size, Houston has more crime per capita. And WAY more crimes per square mile.

I stand corrected: the murder rate is not a fourth of what it was when I was a prosecutor; it is a fifth.

Most of the difference in the rates is a matter of reporting. The CCPD is aggressive in taking calls and reporting them. The assaults stats are illustrative. A fellow called me the other day wanting to hire me because he was charged with assaulting his wife. His wife got on the phone and said she had gone to the fire department to find out where to turn in a stray dog and they asked her if the scratches on her arm were dog bites and she said no, her husband bit her. They called the cops and they went and arrested her husband for biting her. He hadn't. The fire department does not do sarcasm apparently.

Domestic disturbances here will get you a trip to the pokey that would merit a warning most places.

And by the way, Mexicans or Mexican Americans make up more than half of the population here but are not the only ones committing assaults. Or thefts. Some folks leave here because they don't like living around "Mexicans." Good riddance.
tjburns
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Very Good Lazuras! If you read through those statistics you would indeed be correct that Houston's crime rate is worse. And would find it made it onto top 100 most dangerous cities in America. That being said if you have ever been to Houston, the crime has been mainly kept in certain areas. The crap that lies in corpus sprawls out over the whole city.
And WHOOAAA!! The murder rate is down that means its a great place to live! Never mind that it says that 97% of all other cities have a better crime rate. Awesome I won't be killed, I'll just have all my stuff stolen! What a great place to live!! Might I also note that a town of roughly 300,000 is having its crime rate compared to a city of roughly 2 million, and is competing quite well. Big city problems in a small town.
LOL. And the people that don't like the "mexicans" are Americans who are legal and tired of paying for medical care, child care, and housing for others that don't deserve it. Don't worry eventually all of them will be gone and the city will fall into ruin like Mexico. Then the residents of Corpus can run north and cry for free handouts and ruin some more cities. It is obvious they cannot establish and run a city/country themselves.
huisache

the cities in texas which are booming are either on the border or at the crossroads of major highway systems or have huge universities in them. Corpus sits at the end of a minor interstate, has a small university and is not on the border. That is why its economy is not as booming as others.

evaluating crime rates is a huge apple/oranges/pomegranate affair. The few murders here are almost all domestic affairs or gangstas on gangstas.

I asked my coffee circle this morning how many have ever been assaulted or in danger of it and none of us have. Most of the assaults are family disturbances, which the cops jump on and report and make arrests in.

And if you check crime stats for cities with large immigrant populations you will find they are among the lowest crime centers. El Paso, for example, is one of the safest towns in the country.
tjburns
How long do you want to ignore this user?
El paso is so safe because of the giant law enforcement presence there in response to the violence directly across the bridge. And the towns "booming" by the border are the towns that are finally taking a step out of the gutter that they have been in. Just catching up to what most normal cities in the US are like. I would ask the age of your coffee circle. And bet that because you are on here, you and your friends generally frequent better quality establishments and do not do much night time activity in spots where crime happens or past midnight. It is the younger, machismo generation in Corpus that cause all the problems. Severely uneducated and trying to compensate for the fact that they have nothing. End of the day, the description in that report tells me I would be better of living in 97% of all other cities.

Im from Houston originally... and lived in CC for a while. I would rather be set on fire while drinking flaming goat piss filled with ants than to ever go back there!

economy = suck
nightlife = suck
outdoors = fish or suck
neighbors = rob you, rape your cats, and flat out suck

In short, if you are on the verge of suicide and actually want to want to do it, move to Corpus.

Jbag, no point to argue these guys have their mind made up. Not to mention some of the best bird hunting in Texas, beaches that can be accessed almost year around, etc.

I never said anything about the fishing. And if you hunt for birds its a pretty good spot. But if you think Texas has good deer.. you need to hunt somewhere else. Best deer in Texas but not anything special.

LOL and the beaches in corpus are trash. Or like north beach have a huge homeless population

The dumbass drivers in Corpus think the yield sign means STOP!! Every exit ramp off of SPID gets jammed up because the idiots can't read or do not know the difference between YIELD.& STOP.

LoneStarFree, if you don't like Victoria, get the fk out, what's keeping you here?? Of course, if you like Corpus more than Victoria, I understand, you probably stop at yield signs too...

Everyone in Corpitos treats a Yield Sign 1 of 2 ways: As a Stop Sign or as a Don't Yield Sign.

I don't understand... the yield sign thing was a dumb argument we used to hate on corpus in high school.
If people actually yield to those exiting the highway they will naturally have to stop-- especially at high traffic exits like staples.
If people don't "stop" like you are ostricizing them for, they are not yielding and likely to cause an accident.
Now granted, there are the occasional nancy's that do stop for way too long and don't merge in between exiting cars even if there is plenty of room and that does increase the traffic burden, but you CAN'T tell me the drivers in Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, etc. are particularly any better. I have heard complaints about ALL cities and their "dumbass" drivers.
And if this was a reason for not living somewhere I'd argue that I would not want to live in any of the aforementioned big cities due to having outrageous traffic even at non-peak hours. Even college station traffic is absolutely horrid during the school semesters. Maybe I ought to just live in the country.

IMO Yielding means figuring out if you're on the access road how to moderate your speed so that you either are safely infront of the car coming off the ramp or slowing down enough to let them in front of you, not stopping.
lazuras_dc
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
When there's 10 cars coming down the off ramp back to back there's no way you are going to moderate your speed into the middle of them. You probably will have to stop and wait for that group to finish exiting before you get over.
Also I'm talking about the left lane of the feeder as well. The right lane people who stop are pretty annoying as it is much easier to merge and you get more spacing further ahead on the right lane.
