Let's say A&M bolts and the Big 12 implodes? Baylor is out inthe cold, eventually landing in the Big East, Mountain West, WAC, etc.

I once read that Big 12 revenue sharing pumps millions into the Waco area economy.

What happens when Big 12 revenue isnt there? Big impact? Bump n the road?

BTW, I favor a move to the SEC, and Baylor fans make it damn hard to be sympathetic in their misfortune. Nevertheless, seems like the while area could be affected.

What do y'all think?

sure it will, yet I wanna go to the SEC, always have. I was extremely disappointed when we didn't jump. Nationally, it would be good for A&M. I have been to Baton Rouge, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Athens, Starkville, and believe me college football is HUGE in the south. At times, I think more than Texas. But, we have the pro sports & high schools

as far as waYco, well...bye

I really don't care about waYco, and I grew up there. The only good thing outta waYco is I-35 ( and Aggies )

as far as baler, they don't belong with the big boys, never have and never will. Let em eat dust

Outside of OU/Texas/A&M and Nebraska, the crowds for even Big 12 games at Baylor are only in the 30's so I think those are the only instances that will REALLY be felt

Baylor would have to schedule so big names in the future no conference schedules. As Dave said, they don't draw anyone for most games. Two years ago, there were more Nebraska fans in the stands at Floyd Casey than Baylor fans.

I remember the "economic studies" on Baylor in the Big 12 that were released last summer when it looked like Baylor was headed for CUSA. It looked like they assumed that Baylor would have no football program if the Big 12 collapsed.

I didn't see the studies, but I did read somewhere that Baylor and/or Waco would take an 8 figure hit. Don't remember the specifics.

It's more than just gate revenue.

8 figures? Damn. Are you talking the community in general or are you including how much Baylor athletics makes as a member of the Big 12?
Captain Pablo

Community. Again, no specifics. Just that it would negatively impact the community, I assume including Baylor, to the tune of 8 figures. I don't know what all that includes - direct Big12 revenue to Baylor, hotel, restaurant, retail, etc.

If you thnk about it, it wouldn't be hard to get there - huge Big12 money goes to the school and has to be spent somewhere - construction, facilities, local purchases, etc. And sporting events - hotel, restaurants, retail, booze. Scholarship money which is spent locally.... Again, no specifics, just that Big 12 membership has benefitted the area, and losing the Big 12 would hurt - a lot.

Some outlandish figure was bandied about last summer, but I think it came from the economist who has been pretty much discredited. Can anyone help me with his name?

It will be a MAJOR hit, but Baylor should have never been in the Big 12 to start with so I'd think of it as a bonus for a couple of decades that they never should have had.

Also, keep in mind that A&M, tu, and tech (if they are not in the same conference with Baylor) can still play Baylor. It just won't be a conference game.

How about the revenue to BU might go up because - t.u., A&M, Huskers, etc. will now have to pay them for the easy win - a la Troy State, Texas State, et. al.

honestly, with Floyd Casey only seating a handful, how much could you make.

btw-i'm about 2.5litres deep at the Hard Rock in Beijing. Sorry if this is incoherent. :-)

Baylor needs to build a smaller, on campus stadium and get into a league where they could win with more regularity, i.e., C-USA, Mtn West, etc. THAT would be a great plan for Baylor sports to succeed I think.
HollywoodBQ

Bohunk - that's actually a really good idea. I think Baylor would have enough land available on campus or could buy the land next to campus.

Of course they'd have to build a massive amount of parking if they're going to bring in a bunch of people for a game. I think Football would drag in a heckuva lot more than Basketball or Baseball. In fact, it might even increase the number of people who want to live on campus or right around it. If they could walk to a football game on the weekend. And didn't have to drive to the stadium.

I've been saying that for a long time. I used to work with a guy who was high up in the Stanton athletic administration. He said the same thing. They just could never come up with the money. I think that would revitalize their program. I think Baylor fans have pinned their hopes on Drayton making it happen once he sold the Astros.
Captain Pablo

There's plenty of land around campus to build a stadium, mainly on and near the far north side. Also, the Baylor alum could fund it if they wanted. But I guess they'd rather just look to uncle Drayton for the money. But I agree, the key to the future of Baylor football is a stadium on campus.

Now, as to the original question, it's not just attendance that figures in to economic impact. Huge amounts of money flow to Big 12 schools via TV money, etc. $10million here and there isn't a huge deal for someone like tu, but to Baylor it is. That money dries up and the local economy WILL feel it.
BohunkAg

I'm just not sure how that will affect me. Even sh-ttier restaurants? Fewer hotels? I'm half joking, but I'm not sure what Waco could lose in this deal that would make it even less attractive than it already is.

I don't think Waco would lose any of what you've say. Personally, I think Baylor leaving the Big 12 wouldn't hurt Waco. The hotel/eateries are already here. The away team for sporting event will still fill up regardless of conference (certainly not at capacity, but close). Plus, I can't see Baylor NOT playing tu, A&M as non-conference opponents. What is making "Waco" money is the growth of China Spring, Hewitt, and Woodway.

Agree with piag. I just don't see Waco losing anything that I would care about if Baylor were to leave the Big XII.

observation about waYco

like stated here, it is Hewitt, CS, Woodway that are pumping growth

not waYco

to me, waYco is a very depressed area. Look at it

I just sold my house in Robinson (gladly)...the new nearby University High School is the first NEW high school built by the WISD since the early 1970's

what a joke

I travel all over Tejas, and see new schools everywhere, but not waYco

honestly, it's kinda like when WISD called my home when I lived @ Lake Travis, wanting to put my bio in some alum directory they wanted to publish. I told 'em "no way". waYco never did a damn thing for me. The waYco schools were horrible. I didn't want some deadbeat from waYco looking me up.

I earned every bit of what I have done in my life, no thanks to waYco. The place is full of idiots, that is why I left right after high school. Crime is terrible, I know, I had two .38's stuck in my head in an armed robbery while in high school. Found out later, the two guys were murderers, and went to death row for killings before the did me.

I know, I'm ranting,...but the whole town can go away, for good

aw, thanks Bohunk

you are a fine soul

yes, I am tired,...from a West Tejas road trip, some 1300 miles, but had a helluva good time & trip to Alpine. Got to visit with some childhood friends from waYco, of course we all now are on seperate paths...went to 3 minor league baseball games @ Kokernot Field to see the Alpine 06 Cowboys play, named after the 06 Ranch that my childhood friends own...

lotsa fun, more so, because I got to see my friends, and got to hang w/ some of the baseball players. Fine young men, living a dream.

and because of the Lacy - Kokernot family that I knew when growing up in waYco, it is history.

Me too. Because when I phone home, I like to know in advance what the latest conversation topic is.

Can't wait for that new UHS campus to open.

You can look at Perryman's report here http://www.perrymangroup.com/, but you don't have to be an economist to know that if the Ags leave the Big XII it will affect the Central Texas economy a little bit. I think the bigger issue would be A&M leaving and the Big XII breaking up. If this happened we would see less Texas vs. Texas games and that would definitely hurt the Texas economy. I'm for a move to the SEC for us, but if I were on the outside looking in I definitely wouldn't want to see the Aggies go.

Actually, you would see more money coming in that case because Texas teams would be playing more teams from out of state, and more money would be coming in from out of state as opposed to Texas residents spending money in Texas. Don't let Baylor's propaganda get to you.
