And Temple's racism blocks some of the east side growth. People associate that side of town with the black community. They dont' want to move to the other side of the "wrong" side. If they do they move all the way East to be in the Rogers district. I don't agree with the mentality, but I think it is that way.

Temple also seemed to have lacked a master plan for growth outside the alphabet and number streets. So everything is random on the edges.

Well, I said 3000 "before too long". 2020 is only 7 years away. And that I thought there would be 2 high schools by the time mazzag's 9 year old graduated, which I assume would be 2021, one year after 2020.

What am I missing here?

As for 2 schools, 1 team, no, that ain't gonna happen, and I don't think mazzag said it would. Just repeating talk amongst a few old farts reliving the glory days, I assume...

I have 3 siblings, all graduated from Belton HS in the last 3 years and all of them are at A&M.

I had been told that Temple did not want to drop to 4A, so they counted the students at the alternative school, which is perfectly within the rules, as I understand it. They don't HAVE to count them, but they CAN count them if they choose. They have chosen to do so, I am told, and I agree with that decision. I think a drop to 4A, while perhaps inevitable at some point, would royally suck for THS.

I hope THS hangs on in 5A as long as possible... It's not necessarily about dropping enrollment. It may be that the UIL raises the 5A cutoff (currently at 2090) which would make it close...

FYI, you can request to stay up in 5A even if you fall below the enrollment criteria. Some of the Houston schools did it for years.

Also, that's happening to a lot of smaller schools....it's not that they are getting smaller...it's that the enrollment brackets are moving up due to the higher number of larger schools in the bigger areas. They try to keep the numbers the same in each class, so the schools that are stable on enrollment eventually get squeezed down to a lower classification.

Would be SHOCKED if West, for example, didn't move down to 2A at some point. Their enrollment has been about the same since I went there, but the 3A cutoff has been going up and up. When I was in school in the early 90s, it was 350-700 and is now something like 450-1000.

That's probably part of it. But looking at that map, I realized that a lot of that area is already occupied by the city dump and other city utility property.

And Crusader is right --- That map is ANCIENT (I got it off the TISD web site. Go figure). That map doesn't reflect a LOT of the developed areas out S. 31st street, 5th, waters dairy, etc.... Heck, that map is from before Canyon Creek Dr. cut through from 31st to 5th Street!!!

My guess is if the map was updated, and taking into consideration unavailable city owned land east of downtown, it would paint a pretty bleak picture insofar as future growth for TISD...

Here's a bigger map that's more readable. Apologies if it crashes yalls' computers.

Belton is in the same boat as Georgetown was a few years ago. Georgetown is a smaller city than Temple, but they now have 2 high schools because of their large school district. Both schools are 4A and will be back up to 5A soon. East View High School is huge and they are adding on to Georgetown High.

When I graduated, '91, I think 15 of us, out of 240 went to A&M. I think about 4 of us went to tu and 2 of them actually graduated. One ran home after the first semester, another dropped out for personal reasons. All of us that went to A&M finished.
Similar experience from Midway '88. We had probably equal numbers go to A&M and t.u. The A&M graduation rates were significantly higher. The t.u. folks who didn't make it rates were pretty high.

In my small group of 5 HS friends, we had 2 go to A&M, 3 go to t.u. Both Aggies graduated within 5 years. Of the three sips, they lasted 2 semesters, 3 semesters and the only one who graduated took 7 years.

Having not been to Btown in a looooong time, I am surprised to see this.

Since mazzag and I graduated together, I thought we were trailblazers at the time, since you could really count on one hand those of us headed out to the big school down the road.

Didn't realize A&M had become so popular with the Belton crowd.

am i correct in looking at that map and seeing that Wildcat Dr. is in Belton ISD?

if so

and walking the HS and MS's the last year or so, there are a lot more kids wearing A&M gear than when I started here 5 years ago. That's even despite Ash heading to sipville. He was a pretty good kid by most accounts I've heard and a lot of people were rooting for him here in Belton after he signed there.... but winning/losing changes things.

Well, Belton's fight song IS "Texas Bite".

Personally, I couldn't live with that.

Thanks, cjags.

I never cease to be amazed at how awesome our student body is.

They are so misunderstood, and treated so incredibly unfairly by media, realtors, etc. 98% of our kids are awesome, awesome.

Lots of hurting today. I know the coach you're talking about. I keep asking how they're doing, but haven't received a good answer, yet.

I'm very sorry about what happened yesterday. That said, I think you may misunderstand why people may or may not let their kids go to TISD. For me it's never been the kids that my own would have to "socialize" with, it's been the administration, especially at the highest level. It seems not too long ago the superintendent position had a high turn over rate. Then the answer was to steal a superintendent from an area 2A school. I haven't kept up since she was hired. I also have a problem with TISD being unable to get very important bonds passed when aging schools need upgrades. It seems voters don't care or the admin can't get them to. I'm not thrilled with BISD's recent bonds because my property taxes went up $500/yr but even if they used obama type tactics, the bonds passed and BISD is better prepared to deal with future growth. More than I've seen from TISD. Sorry if I seem rude under the circumstances, but Temple kids have never been my issue. I have very good friends that grew up going to school there.

What are these "Obama tactics?"

I ask this as a a BISD administrator (I use that term loosely) with children in the district. I felt that the district was very open and if you've been to any of the campuses along 2305 during school hours there's no way you can't say they aren't congested. Pirtle has almost 800 kids. BISD isn't perfect and I'm obviously biased but I'd like to know what you felt was done wrong there so as to avoid it in the future.

C-jags the most yes votes came from the admin building polling location. I was told all the retired teachers and administrators were picked up and brought in to vote yes,of course, and taken back home. I understand schools are packed but my daughter has been at Sparta for 5 yes and has never had a full class room. It fluctuates between 18-22 kids every year. Redrawing lines could alleviate some of this. And having a builder on the school board with his own agenda doesn't help. IMO.

We voted no. And prayers to folks that travel 317 to get back and forth to schools.
c-jags
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Your fellow constituents voted that individual in.

You'll only see 22 in a class because that's all they can have by TEA standards. That doesn't make for crowded classes but it makes for crowded schools and portables.

I'd like to know where you heard that people were bused in. I work in that building and encountered more angry "no" voters than anything else. I'm not a bigwig so I don't pretend to know everyhting that goes on. If it's true then that's poor and I don't care for that tactic as well.

Sentiments understood.

I didn't vote him in and I agree it may be needed and bonds are cheap and it's best to do 3 schools at once, but again that's $700 in the last 2 years my taxes have gone up. The county hides it by lowering its tax rate and my property value but this year my home suddenly appraises for more. Go figure. And I heard that from a friend that works at Lakewood and has been involved with redrawing maps in the past.
Belton is OLD school and I'm not surprised.
