I really need to post an update and some pics, I love these 40s I haven't cracked open the 78 I have yet until I get the 74 out to the deer lease with a new suspension ome lift and some work with my new rogue tube bender to make it a little easier for south texas hunting.

This weekends project is finishing the lift that was last weekends project just adding in the welding of a spring hanger that is loose. I was expecting busted bolts and impossible removal of the ubolts but those were great so I should have known loose rivets on the spring hanger would pop up at me.

Anyways the reason I'm posting is again to sing Cody's praises. Thanks for your help as always.

Oh and I got in the missing factory pieces so I can put my new bumper on, that was fun realizing the PO removed factory brackets that were riveted on from the front rails and you have to source them and wait 2 weeks for them

Two things:

First, I'll be bitterly disappointed if there isn't a lunch at Tucker's in there somewhere this season. I'll wheel up there and park next to the Beast for a photo op.

Second, did you know that right across the highway from you there is a barn filled with Ferraris and vintage Land Cruisers? One of the heirs to the Yturria has a nice collection that he keeps in a climate controlled barn on the Punta del Monte. I know he has beautiful red 60 , both short and long versions of the 45, and iirc a Troopy, but not a straight 40 like ours. He's my parent's age, but I know him well and we talk LC when I see him in town. Just the other day I drove the 40 to get some gas and a chorizo taco at the Stripes; while I was inside, he strategically pulled up to the same pump and ambushed me as I came out. We kept the pumps blocked for a good while talking Land Cruiser and he asked me to come up for a tour when able. I intend to take him up on that soon.

Lunch will happen absolutely. As soon as the 74 is out there I'll be tearing down mustard from 1ags

Where do you guys get wheels? I had a blowout a couple weeks ago and pulled over as quick as I could but might have a damaged wheel. I was out of the country the last week and haven't taken it to discount tire yet but I tried searching on their website and they don't have wheels for my 00 100 series.

I'm not looking for anything fancy but where do you buy wheels if DT doesn't have any for me?

My mailman has complimented my Land Cruiser a couple of times. Today he rolled up in a sweet looking Hilux Surf. I didn't get a chance to talk to him about it, but hopefully I can snap a picture of it tomorrow.

I've been a regular of the OB, but new pursuits has me here. I recently picked up a 97 FJ80 (it's really a 1996 but took a victory lap to the dealership).

I'll do a full show and tell once it's back from paint this week, but so far it's been getting a full overhaul.

Two mechanical issues I still haven't resolved. (Dajda's couldn't or wouldn't address them when he had it for 2 weeks).

1. The dreaded P0401 code. Mike Dajda claims they pulled the manifold and cleaned the internal ports and we did replace the EGR but after 40 miles the CEL came back. I just ordered an OEM VSV thinking this might be something I need to tackle myself

2. The PO installed at OME 2.5" lift but didn't not do any caster correction. He gave me the NIB Landtank Plates he never got around to installing but Dajda refused to install them because he doesn't recognize the name. He wanted to install correction bushings.

Questions. How much of a PITA is it to pull the manifold, replace all the hidden vac lines and swap the VSV? Weekend job?

3. Anyone use Tandem Off-road. Pablo told me over the phone he would install the plates, but is pushing Delta Control Arms first and a new steering box??

Rule one (day I bought her).

And a sneak peak of the after once Trinity Leather installed the Katzkin covers, new carpet and door panels. Plus all new plastic consoles.

Pablo generally knows his stuff, but that's not always the most economical. Did they see the truck or just over the phone?

I had preferred Tread Depot for a lot of things as their price was better than Tandem, but their lead mechanic just left and went to Tandem, so... meh.

Did you get your dash redone, or was it solid from the start?
FIDO 96

Dash was solid. And the plastic was good but scratched (steering column) or had holes from DIY projects. I replaced all the interior lights with LED and even have a Green D!

The cluster was hazy and dirty. Pulled it and buffed with Maguire's PlastiX. GM shine!

Just dropped some parts off at iCandy Auto Body. They specialize in high-end and exotics. They do all our work. Tear down is complete and so is PDR. Glass gets removed tomorrow. And then it's more body work prior to primer

For as nice as you're going on this build, I would go with Jmacx offroad or Blackhawk radius arms. I prefer Jmacx, but it takes a while to get them here from Oz. Go with the higher lift options on either as too much caster is better than not enough IMO.

I tried a Redhead steering box on my '95 and had a seal failure within a couple thousand miles. I went back with a new 105 series steering box and I think it's worth it over the Redhead, even if the Redhead didn't fail.

Edit: now is the time to ditch the OEM roof rack if you're going to. The body shop can flatten and weld the holes.

Are you going back with gold emblems or silver?
FIDO 96
How long do you want to ignore this user?

The roof rack is being powder coated black. I have all new gold emblems. Other than deleting the running boards and lift, I'm keeping it mostly stock. I'll likely add a turbo or SC next year, and then someday I may do all new bumpers, tire carrier, etc. pretty sure this is my new Lego set. I'll Google those control arms. Thanks.

Is this a good deal? 97 heritage edition. 250k miles. $11k

Two things to look for when buying an 80 Series that affect value. One is it rusted or lived part of its life in northern states. The second thing is does it have a knob to the left of the steering wheel that says DIFF LOCK. I personally want a daily driver that will see mostly concrete roads or job sites so I wanted a rig that lived its life in the south more than I cared about triple lock differentials. Rust / northern states hurt value. Triple lock diffs add value.

- Is it leaking fluid when it sits for more than 30 mins. - - How grimy are the giant "ball joints" on the front axles?
- is the dash cracked? Seats trashed?
- are there signs of mold around the headliner near the visors or sunroof?
- ac cold
- did PO do a lot of mods. Based on this photo that looks to be a slick 40th Collectors Edition, but I thought they only came in Pearl Sage. I'm not 40th CE expert so I could be wrong!

$11k is less than I paid for my 97 but I knew exactly what was good and bad with it so I thought got a good deal.

If you are in the market for a LC I would suggest you pay the $149 for 5 CarFax reports and also buy Autocheck reposts. I ran the CarFax report on countless trucks simply to see where they spent their life. Also, CarFax is not always credible. Twice I found stuff on AutoCheck that never made its way to CarFax. And you can see pics of damage from auctions if you really dig in. Run both reports on any rig you think you might want to go see.

The dash was in great shape. I replaced the left side cluster (where the gray reostat is). Mine had the crappy faux wood and it took the paint off and I had a red LED from the 90s alarm. Now it's all new and black!

There are also companies you can pay for someone to go do a test drive and look over a vehicle for you. I did that once on a Ford Raptor, and the report I got back on it was extremely detailed.

Here's some pics I got today from the body shop…most of the body work is done, and first coats of paint going down. I decided to paint the front bumper and end caps Moonglow Pearl to match the body paint. Normally on a two-tone vehicle I don't mind the graphite grey for bumpers, but these two shades of gray are too close and always messed with my OCD when used with this particular color combo.

POLL: What color badges:

I have 3 options for badges. There are 3 that go on the rear hatch. The Toyota Logo, the Full Time 4WD & LAND CRUISER badge across the back.

Right now I have the Gold Logo & 4WD with the silver/black LC badge.

Option 1: Keep it original
Option 2: All Chrome - standard offering
Option 3: Black Logo, silver/chrome 4WD and silver/black LC badge.
Option 4: Try to find the elusive Black Pearl 40th LE badges

My vote is all chrome. Gold screams Gulf States Toyota Special edition and I don't believe it was ever a factory option. I had gold on my 100 when I purchased it and immediately removed. If you are going with black wheels, I can see how you may want black trim but only if you go that route.

I ditched the gold that came on both my 80s. Ian at SNLC may still have some of my gold takeoffs.

I vote chrome.
