She didn't come across the turn lane, she was exclusively in my lane driving counter flow to traffic at 50mph. So I had to make a split second decision to guess what she was going to do and then try to get out of her way. I chose to turn and enter the empty middle lane vs the curb/sidewalk/trees. I have no idea if it was the right decision. I do know that turning the way I did made her hit the side of the car I was not on rather than than hitting me head on/straight into my door if I had turned right.

You lived. It was the right decision. Same happened to me. I hit the rear of an oncoming car, totaled my truck. But everyone was uninjured in my case also. You can always 2nd guess decisions, but you are safe.

You can certainly review the decisions you made in the milliseconds before impact. But only to file it away in your memory banks, as reference if something like this ever comes up again.

But don't second guess or blame yourself. You did the best you could at the time, you lived, you didn't take out any innocents, and you can't change it.

Good job.

For the wider discussion, I recall reading, decades ago, that drunks often crossed the center line, and their victims would sometimes dodge to the left into the oncoming lane, to save themselves. Then the drunk would wake up, swerve back into their own lane, and the blame for the wreck would fall on the innocent party.

Of course this was well before dash cams. I hope your Tesla dash cam was armed and running.

Back to our daughter's wreck, she was on a four lane road with a grass median. She was in a 3/4 ton pickup, passing a smaller car. The drunk came out of his lane, crossed the wide grass median, and hit her nearly head on. She only managed to swerve a little, and get hit with about 3 feet of the bumpers of each vehicle hitting.

The drunk blocked her path to the left, and the innocent third car prevented her from swerving right. Her right leg bones shattered in the collision, because she had her foot crammed on the brake. Drunk was relatively uninjured (of course).

Selfishly, I wonder if she should have taken out the innocent car to her right, and hope the damage and injuries to the third person were minor. It could have saved her a lifetime of disability. But you can't ever know what the 100% correct course is in the fraction of time you have to react.

It would have been possible that if she swerved right, the drunk might have missed everyone, and gone on with life. She and the innocent 3rd party could have had a completely different, terrible, crash, and only our daughter's word that she was not at fault.

Accept what is and go on, is the point.

Glad everything turned out well relative to it all.

How crazy looking is the Tesla cam footage?

That front and passenger side view are pretty crazy. A little less intense than I expected because no sound, and I guess because I lived it all five senses. My family and friends who watched it certainly did not feel like it was no big deal--ha!

By all means I wasn't trying to say you did anything wrong, just wild that this happened to you! Hard so say that I wouldn't have done the same thing even though I've been told otherwise. Again, glad that you're okay!

My wife's godparents son was killed by a drunk driver this way. He actually moved to them opposite shoulder and was almost stopped when he was head head on. DD was also killed and DD passenger was asleep but lived and had zero memory of anything.

No want to say the DD family even filed a wrongful death suit.
