Never thought I'd see someone defending the honor of California redneck culture on F16 but it's a new year. Let's make it a banger!

What's the deal with people in Phoenix and LA referring to freeways as "The (insert number)"? Everywhere else I've been, people just say "I-10", or "35 North", or "290". We wouldn't say "the 101" for example.

Interesting.

5, 405, 101, 91, 14, 1, 110, 105, 210, 710, 60, 22, 57, 55..

Before the Waze days, we just used these numbers in LA as these are both Interstate and state hwys. Even today, I can clearly see where these hwys are on the map iin my minds eyes.

I'd hop on 22 to 45 to 605 to 5 to 101 and get off on sunset to go 22 miles to work. We'd just give direction, from 101, 5 south to 91 east 55 north to Placentia. Makes perfect sense even 40 years later.

Also, we had a 100 page map book called the Thomas guide for LA and Orange County. Most drivers back than had all the highways I mentioned memorized and would be able to navigate without a map or GPS. Thomas Guide was for the small and each streets.

I got my first motorcycle at 20 and a corvette at 28. I guess that means at 43, I am near the end. Where is my closest Buick dealer?

Very nice. Good Aggie car.

Thanks! Every time I say I don't use it enough, and consider selling, I'll drive it and change my mind.

She's got the TVS swap, ID1000s, VMP heat exchanger and intercooler, and MGW shifter. Laying down 638 at the wheels.

I'm not looking for a vehicle that starts at over 200k.

Another that scares me after driving Raptors for 7 years is that I ignore potholes and speed bumps, curbs, and most other obstacles. Not sure how I would adjust to a vehicle with low profile tires. I'd hate to have to replace one of those rims.
More so meant used. The non-coupe Turbo S is in the upper 90s these days.

Completely understand the lo-pro worry. For the first time ever, I bought an aftermarket wheel service plan with my Cayenne and have used it 3x in a year.

I've had two Wheel service plans living in Dallas and both more than paid for themselves and within one year.

I'm currently contemplating an F430 for my 40th this summer while also acknowledging my first kid is about to be born. Currently have a 77 CJ as my play car but it doesn't get driven much with no roof or doors.

That's the most cliche thing I've ever heard. A dude having his first kid at 40 and buying an F430.

I didn't expect this much of a response to this thread. It's been interesting seeing other people's vehicles and hearing their stories.

I've been borderline consumed for weeks now on what I plan on doing for my next vehicle. I definitely wanna go way beyond everything I've ever driven.

My youngest graduates from HS in 2029. At any point after that, Ill be ready! I'm literally setting money aside every month for my next vehicle now

Could also be talked in to the more practical DB11, but we'll see. Have some time to find the right something.

I'm 44 and about to get another fun car. Have a Land Cruiser but want something speedy. Probably a 911.

Not a mid life crisis car. No crisis here. Just want to reap some rewards of working hard before I'm 65.

Update. Wife's X5 was t-boned today, so my 911 money will likely be headed toward replacing that with something satisfactory.

I'm 50. Driven whatever I wanted over the past 10 years. Not limited by budget but I'm practical. I want a vehicle that will get me from A to B and can be used for work. I was on the Grenadier waitlist when it first came out, only to be disappointed in how it actually materialized. Love Toyota's, but my 23 Tundra Platinum has me weary for first run versions so the GX550 / LC 250 will have to wait. My 18 Range Rover was fun as hell to drive but an $$$ POS to own.

That's why I got a 97 FJ80 in August and in the process of making it my daily driver. It's practically new inside : outside and underneath.

AggieDruggist89 gave a reasonable description but I think the reason for why it is difficult for others outside of SoCal to understand is just the sheer volume of freeways of different road classification types in SoCal versus other locations.

For comparison, when I lived in Austin in the mid-late 1990s, there was I-35, 183 (Research or Ed Bluestein), MoPac, 290, 71 (Ben White) and that was it.

When I lived in Denver in the early 2000s, it was I-70, I-25, 225 (sometimes called two and a quarter), C470, E470 and US 36 (Boulder Turnpike). Maybe CO-83 (Parker Road) (edit to add CO-93, between Golden and Boulder).

Where I live today in Houston, you've got I-45, I-10, Loop 610, Beltway 8, Texas SH 288, Highway 6, US59 / I69 and that's really about it. Apologies to the 249 or 1960 fighters, I don't get to that side of town very often.

In Los Angeles, a typical day making sales calls might take me:
  • In the morning from Burbank to Pasadena - California Hwy 134 to Interstate 210.
  • Then from Pasadena to the Office in El Segundo - California Hwy 110 though Downtown LA where it becomes Interstate 110, south to Westbound Interstate 105 towards LAX where I'd get on California Highway 1 and make a left at Rosecrans.
  • In the afternoon I might have to go down to see a customer in Newport Beach with a stop at the Office in Irvine - Interstate 405 south to California Highway 55 and then onward to California Highway 1.
  • Then I have to get home from Newport which might go something like - California Highway 73 to Interstate 405 to Interstate 605 to Interstate 5 to California Highway 134.

Now to write that out in a way that makes sense would go like this:
  • The 134 onto The 210
  • The 110 to The 105 to PCH
  • The 405 to The 55 to PCH
  • The 73 to The 405 to The 605 to The 5 to The 134
Probably one of the difficult parts to understand is that with the quality of the highways, there usually isn't much difference between whether it's a Interstate, a US Route, or a California State Highway. So therefore, anything additional to the number really doesn't matter.

And another interesting situation is what we see with The 110 and The 210. There are sections that are US Interstate but there are sections of the same freeway that are California State Highways.

Now for maximum fun, you can redo my commute using the Freeway names which is something the newscasters do that always leaves me scratching my head.
  • The Ventura Freeway to the Foothill Freeway (nobody calls it that)
  • Arroyo Seco Parkway to the Harbor Freeway to (I don't even know what they call The 105) to PCH
  • The San Diego Freeway to The Costa Mesa Freeway to PCH
  • The San Joaquin Hills Toll Road (nobody calls it that) to the San Diego Freeway to the San Gabriel River Freeway (nobody calls it that) to The Golden State Freeway back home to The Ventura Freeway.
Now if you run into traffic on any of those routes, you might have to take a different set of freeways entirely.

Example, driving from LA to Phoenix, you've got The 210, The 10 and The 60 that will all take you to the same place around San Bernardino.

You just reminded me of a key fallacy in the "names" where the Ventura Freeway is The 134 and The 101.
But, The Hollywood Freeway is The 101 and The 170.

But nobody uses "The 27", it's always Topanga Canyon.

One final,

I can't believe you left out Santa Monica Fwy.. Formally Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway otherwise known as the I-10. Or 10.

But see... Santa Monica Fwy is really referred to the section west of 5-60-101-10 merger by Boyle Heights. Kinda. I would've never said take Santa Monica from El Monte to Rancho Cucamonga..

I had forgotten about the Christopher Columbus designation.
Looks like they got rid of it quietly during Covid.
https://lanaic.lacounty.gov/california-legislature-approves-removal-of-the-christopher-columbus-transcontinental-highway-designation-of-the-i-10-freeway/

Rancho Cucamonga is off The 210 and The 15 so you'd have to get off The 10 anyway.
I was thinking El Monte is off The 60 and The 605 but I was confusing it with Montbello.

I'm 28 and since I was a kid I have always wanted a single cab dually diesel, well I wouldn't call it a mid life crisis vehicle but I don't want to buy it later in life and would rather enjoy it at a much younger age, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

Mine was simple, I'm 39 now and have had trucks since I was 16 for work, etc. but always wanted a mustang. A few years ago I picked up a '18 metallic gray GT coupe with the six speed manual. Added some engine goodies, and I love it. Had less than 20k miles when I bought it and hauls my ass around just fine, still kept my truck though.

Not sure if this counts or not. It's not expensive or very fast. I knew I wanted to get back into riding but not sure what kind of bike I really wanted or what kind of riding I wanted to do. So I got this. Oh, and I'm 40 years old so the age probably fits the definition of midlife lol.
