A peculiar piece of news crossed my Facebook feed today from a source I was not expecting. An old high school friend of mine said on Facebook that he had been laid off from his job that he had for 25 years. I learned that he had been a mechanic for a company called Jack Cooper. I did not know who or what Jack Cooper was, so I looked them up. They are/were the oldest and largest auto transport company in North America, delivering new vehicles to Ford and GM dealerships. They were in the midst of negotiating a new contract with Ford when Ford abruptly withdrew from negotiations and exercised a 30-day cancellation clause in their contract. GM quickly ended their contract about the same time, and just like that an 87-year-old business closed their doors and let all their employees go.
I have not quite figured out what all forces are in play, but this is not a positive sign from the auto industry.
