According to WSJ:

  • Ford is considering discontinuing the electric F-150 Lightning due to low demand and $13 billion in total EV losses since 2023.
  • Ford's U.S. EV sales dropped 24% year-over-year in October, with only 1,500 Lightnings sold compared with 66,000 gas F-Series pickups.
  • Mainstream truck buyers have resisted the Lightning due to high prices, starting around $50,000, and concerns about range when towing or in cold weather.

Most that do go out the door are closer to $80K+ than 50K. They built some huge infrastructure for their EV battery plants in KY and TN I think, will be curious what they do with those as backing away from the capacity they had planned seems nearly certain at this point.

I doubt this impacts Tesla too much as it doesn't sell enough to matter competitively, but they are only selling 20K/year of their 'cybertruck' and might make a smaller/more normalish pickup next.

Curious if Scout Motors will pivot with their EV models. They have allready delayed EV production 6 months, was announced a few weeks ago.

I'm surprised the Lightning sells more than the Silverado EV, the Chevy has great range (est 400 miles).

It's funny how many more EV's Tesla sells than everyone else https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g64540955/bestselling-evs-2025/

They could and should repurpose to hybrid production for cars and small SUV but first they need some designs to produce for. A heavy battery only truck with current technology was always a useless non starter. Even cybertucks are vanity vehicles that are more big car than truck. Get some practical value out of all that investment. Hybrid small vehicles are useful.

Has Ford actually announced this? What is the source?

Been saying it for a decade. Non plug in Hybrids make way more sense for mass production than full electric.

My Powerboost has been fantastic and I never have to plug it in. Better mpg, better range, better HP and Torque than ICE, better power generating capability.

"WSJ" means Wall Street Journal

Yeah I saw the report on Car and Driver which referenced Wall Street Journal, but I wonder who is the source behind their paywalled article. Maybe this is like when an Athletic Department leaks a coach on a hot seat to gauge fan response. If a Ford Exec announced that they have full faith in the Lightning, then we will know it is doomed.

Good question, I follow you now. All articles I just found point to the WSJ report, so the true source seemed unknown (I couldn't read the full WSJ article, if a source was named).

Is it common to hint ending production to build interest in some way? I could see that.

I miss my Sonic Blue '03 a lot. I searched the vin a few months ago trying to buy it back and found it was crushed in 2018. I refuse to spend $20k+ on another with 150k miles. I think I paid $23k for it used in 2005.

I hope Ford gives the name back to a vehicle fitting of Lighting. I'd love to see a new generation flare side single cab truck with a whipple on top but I doubt it'd sell well for the price.

My 15 yo daughter has dreams of building a modern day lightning. Has been saving up her money for 5 years and caught me in a weak moment of "Dad we can build a project truck together!"

So now we own a RCSB 5.0 F-150 and doing all the research on parts now. She won't be getting the whipple until she can buy it and is 18 but until then, 'Merica.

if she's responsible enough to save up for a supercharger she's probably responsible enough to drive it. Don't make her wait until age 18.

Ah yes, the Mexican GTR. I love it!

Just rolled 60K today in my Lightning. Love every mile!

Farley should have been canned years ago for pushing this so much and not hybrid. Along with killing the Taurus and Fusion (two very good vehicles just horribly marketed)

Dude was given the keys to a well running company. Ford shareholders should be demanding his head.

Just like wagons (lack of demand), folks seem to want to buy SUVs over sedans.

This is why he split into Ford Blue and Model E.

Model E can go bankrupt and ford Blue survives.

Also the Taurus and Fusion were killed before Farley took the reins. Jim Hackett made that decision in 2018. He has in fact even said that getting rid of smaller, More affordable vehicles was a mistake. Also why we will be seeing a US built Bronco sport with a Hybrid variation soon.

Ranger already offers a PHEV in other markets and has teased it on social media to see what reactions people are giving.

Whipple doesn't really whine anymore either, so that really isn't an advantage over TVS. I'd look hard at VMP if I were in the market.

Smaller blower is going to hit harder down low. My old TVS 1.9L Tundra had great low end torque and whine. The bigger 2.3L on my F150 hit later and had almost zero whine. It had a lot more top end though.

Hopefully Ford will get rid of the auto start/ stop again soon so I can buy another F150.

At least give me the option of ordering one without that BS.

Agreed but just having it on the vehicle can potentially cause electrical and other unknown issues- not to mention the extended warranty what ifs.
'Just like the def and other diesel issues, can be deleted but what a pita and expense for such a foolish cause.
I will estimate we have lost hundreds of thousands in downtime and actual costs over the years dealing with these exhaust/ emissions mandate problems on equipment and vehicles.
My current 23 F150 had the auto start/ stop delete from the factory during the chip shortage. It was actually a line item on the window sticker and the reason I bought the truck.

It's one keystroke. I've never been questioned or had any issues. Or even had a tech detect changes I've made.

Even the bypass hardware is removed in less than a minute.
Mas89

So you would take the hardware out years later if going to the shop for warranty work? Not sure what the delete entails.

I'd much rather just not have it from the factory. Keep it simple…

Great news. This entire spectacle is another lesson in government interference ruining something that was working just fine. Of course, the Ford CEO going overboard into it accelerated the government idiocy.

Mach E is an abortion.

what's even worse is that Kentucky bent over backwards and gave Ford a bunch of money because of promises from Ford that they would employ several thousand workers.

Instead they are going to build batteries for Data hubs. very few workers needed.

I doubt it.

The F150 EreV will be based heavily on 2027 F150 design and they're still working on packaging.

I know Ram was going forward using the 3.6L pentastar engine for the generator side of things. But it's been quiet since market sales have dropped once the rebates expired.

You have an inkling about Ford's generator choice?

Guessing it's 2.3 or 2.7 ecoboost

Fire all of the EV battery workers, then rehire them as data center battery workers. Kentuckians still get jobs and Ford doesn't have UAW employees.

even if they did that, they won't need nearly as many workers as they would if they were building actual vehicles.

Ford on Monday said it is pulling back on its electric vehicle plans, a move that will result in a $19.5 billion charge against its earnings to be taken mostly in the current quarter.
