I could fit my car between vehicles in adjacent lanes quite often, should it be legal for cars if it is legal for bikes? I feel more safe in a car than on a bike.

It just seems like a huge safety issue, I don't get why it is allowed. Trying to encourage more motorcycle riders to make up for the city, county, or state not keeping up on road needs? "Sorry we didn't build enough lanes but if you ride a motorcycle it's effectively a 3/5/7 lane road now!!"

Username fits again....

Assuming speed differential isn't more than 15mph, serious injuries and fatalities are reduced by lane splitting.

These two riders/youtubers, Unknown rider and Gixxer brah, are promoting some of the problems that are happening with sport bike riders. Unknown rider is around the Katy and Brookshire area, Gixxer brah is around the DFW area. Gixxer brah is infamous and made a "viral video" because of this, Colorado Springs to Denver in 20 minutes. https://kdvr.com/news/local/motorist-takes-plea-deal-after-colorado-springs-to-denver-in-20-minutes-video/
When I rode I did speed, but not in town. I waited until I hit open stretches of highway. I never lane split, even though I wanted to.

Lane splitting is now legal in CO; however, it's only at stop lights and at 10 mph or so.

The high speed stuff is just asking to get splattered by a no signal, no look lane change.

it's more the filtering vs lane splitting. You still can't do it when traffic is moving, but if it is stopped you can.

I use to ride on the street but started to value my life and let it go.

I didn't lane split because I was worried about getting pulled over or someone getting road rage over it.

I do not get pissed when someone chooses to lane split and I'm in my truck. Some of yall are nancies

It should be legal if traffic is stopped at a signal. It keeps them moving in the heat. I get that. Not a bike rider either.

I haven't ridden since A&M, I'm certain I'm off on the nuances of the terms.

When I'm in car/truck mode, this is my biggest pet peeve!! I hate the left lane "campers" and would LOVE to see DPS pulling these a-holes over and ticketing them for not yielding to faster traffic.

Oh Sir!

You haven't lived until you've seen 5 rows of cars spread across 3 lanes in Bangalore.

Replace "cars" with mopeds, bikes, motorcycles, cars, pickup trucks, vans, transport trailers, cows, buffalos, pigs, chickens and every single vehicle tapping its horn every 5 seconds!!! This is any ville India!!! And somehow,.......... it works! Crazy stuff!

So the guy in the left lane doing the speed limit should move over and let the guy doing 10 over go through? Camping in the left lane is a crime but doing 10 over the limit is not. That's kind of a "the rules are for thee and not for me" attitude isn't it?

I've been street riding for 45 years all over the country, so take my opinion fwiw.

Filtering at a stop light or construction area where traffic is stopped should definitely be allowed.

Splitting should not. Roads that have enough space should have a dedicated m/c lane on the left side.

I was riding my motorcycle in traffic along a 4 lane road with a turn lane in the middle and had a car lane split past me. I wished death upon that teen girl. Damn near killed me and I'm not entirely sure she ever saw me.

They've created a reputation on the road. If you've seen them act like fools, and then drive by a cross on the side of the road with a helmet sitting on top, there ya go.

I'm not in favor of lane splitting but i believe he said 10 mph over the speed of the traffic.

And that was typically when traffic was at stop and go or a stand still

I've got about as much sympathy/empathy for motorcyclists as I do bicyclists that ride on public streets. Just because something is legal, it doesn't make it any less stupid and 100% on you if bad things happen.

One of my odd fears is being at the...right end...of one of these people and my visible lack of empathy somehow gets me in legal trouble. I think about it often. I'd never do anything on purpose, but I'd likely be mad at them for putting in me that situation.

Did about 40k in a few years of riding in Dallas, much of it commuting from near Love Field to Southlake area. After a year I was lane splitting on every commute. No major incidents or close calls, and I shaved 25% off my time vs a car.

You learn to avoid Altimas and v6 Challengers though, especially if they have paper plates.

If there are 2 or more highway lanes in the same direction, the left lane is for passing, speed limit be damned.

If you're in the left lane and you're not passing, or waiting on the car in front of you to get out of your way, I hope you get sudden diarrhea and sh"t your pants.

Left lane campers aren't the police and aren't there to enforce traffic laws.

People are crazy in 2026. I don't want to get shot, road raged against, or my car damaged. I pass and move over even if I'm going over the limit because there are always cars that want to go faster. Be courteous and get the hell out of the way.

I'll never understand people who get their jollies out of intentionally inconveniencing their fellow man.

Yes, the left lane is for passing.

Lane splitting at speed and camping in the left lane are much bigger safety issues than 10 over in a free-flowing left lane.

But the 10 over is not against the law also? So you think the traffic laws shouldn't apply to speeders as long as there is no officer around to enforce them but they do apply to those folks in the left lane doing the speed limit?

Wow, I am "shocked" you came back with that same line of thinking!! My comment specifically focused on safety knowing you would immediately scream "crime". I compared three situations presented in this thread: lane splitting, camping, and going 10 over. You twisted it into a presumption of my views on speeding.

Which of the three scenarios do you think is the safest?

Yes, all three are traffic violations. Not all traffic violations are the same.

I had a guy (i think, based on body shape) doing this on the access road in a traffic stack-up this past Saturday morning. My sons were begging me not to say anything as I was rolling down the window. He had paused next to my door. I simply told him in my coach's voice to stop, that it was not only unsafe, but illegal. He actually stopped doing it, which sort of surprised me.

Yes. Get the hell out of the way. I never understood while this is such a hard concept.

If you're not passing get out of the left lane. If you are passing and there's someone coming up behind you that's going faster get out of the left lane as soon as it's safe to do so. If you want to continue passing after they move on through then feel free to enjoy the left lane again.

I'm convinced left lane police are probably miserable people all the time.

It's not a matter of legality, it's a matter of risk. If you are driving the speed limit in the left hand lane of I-45 when traffic would allow you to drive 10+ MPH over, you are creating a significantly larger risk than someone that's buzzing along at 10 MPH over.

If you wish to pass someone, you should speed up to at least match the flow of traffic of the lane you're getting in.
