Been in a Tundra for 13 years. Passing it on to my son as is car needs major work that I'm not paying for.
Don't really utilize the bed of a truck anymore, but do want something that sits up higher like my truck.
I rented an Expedition Max recently and loved it.
What should I be test driving?

I have a 2020 Expedition Max purchased new in November'20. Knock on wood never any problems. Great on the highway. Some people having issues with the ten speed transmissions on even recent models but I have never had a problem.
Retired next to you in Friendswood!

I am not aware of any Ford 10 speed transmission problems for those manufactured since August 16, 2022. MY2023 and up are a pretty safe bet. Just rolled over 40k on our 2023 Navigator without issue.

Is that considered a large SUV though?

The armada or big infinity is the bang for buck play and you still get a V8(edit: not true apparently). Coming from your old truck you still will be a step up in tech and comfort but not as high as current offerings from Ford GM and Toyota.

Depending on your miles if I was in your position I would lease an Ineos. Cool factor and good seating position. Not sure id want to own one yet.

I don't think they are putting the V8 in them anymore.

Well damn I stand corrected. I honestly had no idea Nissan was doing any product development whatsoever. I assumed they were just going to ride the plane into the ground.

Nissan can be saved if they follow the Stellantis model and GTRify everything.

Xterra should be brought back(they say they are)

There should be a trim of Titan, Armada, Frontier, and Xterra with the GTR motor

This thread just made me do a deep dive on the Nissan Armada, and I think I might have just found the car I've been looking for.

TTV6 with no hybrid crap going on, and it's basically what I was hoping the Toyota Sequoia would be.

Dash looks nice w/physical buttons and not just an awkward vertical iPad stuck to it, cargo space looks good, and reviews seems very solid.

Price on these seems fantastic too.

What am I missing?

The V8. Get the prior year model and be happy for a decade or more with your decision. Get the Infinity version if you can deal with the 'bubble' look

This the NA V8 was bullet proof. Super heavy on fuel but crazy reliable. With gas prices today a low mile 24 used for crazy cheap or get the Infinity qx80 from same year.

I don't think you are missing much. The tech on them is great and the engine and transmission have some good credibility behind them as the engine is a variant of the GTR and the transmission has been tested in a Mercedes. They might not be perfect, but I didn't think they'd be something to worry about like a brand new power train. We've only had ours for 6 months and we still love it. I do think it's downside is storage. Center console is pretty small and we wished it had some more storage under near the rear cargo floor. We got the platinum 4x4, didn't want the air ride suspension in the Platinum Reserve.

If you want to spend $65k on vehicle worth $65k get a 2025/2026 Armada. We love ours so far. Granted only 10,000 miles on it so far.

If you want to spend $85K for a vehicle worth $65K get a Sequoia, Expedition or Tahoe.

I just bought a low mile 21 sequoia. That, Armada, or QX80 is the way to go.

A new Sequoia? Same reliability issues as the new Tundra. Considerably less usable storage than the previous generation. You get better mileage until your engine grenades.

Was referring to previous generation Armada another posted mentioned given the V8.

Cargo area of new Sequoia is baffling, but I like the look of it.

I also prefer new vehicles since I drive them for a decade so I get my money's worth.

What actual MPGs are yall getting on Armadas?

I got my wife a new Expedition over the weekend.... I just told her to ignore the 1 on the left side of all the zeros after she rolled 100K. Hope it lasts forever with the factory chip shortage Auto Start Stop feature they left off these 22s.

Expedition max, expedition, or explorer depending on how much space you need inside and where you will be parking it. My wife hates the longer vehicles due to parking/ fitting in the garage.
My 23 F150 drives and rides better than Chevy/ Gm products. Never been in the shop with 80k miles.

Variant of the GTR engine meaning they are both TT V6 engines, sure. I would bet there is less than 5% parts interchangeability. They probably share bore centers like every Chevy 350 did for 60+ years, and basic block and head architecture, but not part numbers. The engine is more like the 3.0 TT V6 in their smaller products than the 3.8 Godzilla engine.

I'm sure it's a great engine. But it isn't a detuned GTR engine with 0.3L less displacement.

Agreed. Perhaps variant wasn't the right word to use. Nissan sure is pumping that way (see article and quote below), which is probably why I got it in my head. https://www.thedrive.com/car-reviews/2025-nissan-armada-first-drive-review

Quote:

What anyone who looks at the Armada's spec sheet will notice is the new powertrain. It's a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6, which Nissan will tell you is an evolved GT-R engine built for truck duty rather than track duty. Believe that or don't, it doesn't matterit still makes big power at 425 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque.

Another plug for the Armada...my wife got into a pretty nasty collision about 2 yrs ago when someone ran a red light and I could not believe how well it held up. Very little damage all things considered. Gas mileage wasn't great but loved the V8.
Roger350

Yeah if Nissan actually pumped that message out it was their marketing fools. But that quote is journalistic heresay. The article isn't saying Nissan said it, they're saying "they'll tell you." The Drive isn't exactly a credible source, they're putting words in Nissan's mouth to pump up clicks on their article.

Not the same as saying Nissan's Head of Powertrain Development told us that the new engine was developed from the 3.8 TT V6 in the GTR. That would be a lie, so they spin it as "they'll tell you."

Either way, I'm sure it is a great engine, and the Armada is certainly a worthy contender in the large SUV category. With the poor cargo space and hybrid only compromises of the new Sequoia, and the Big 3's reputation for reliability, the Armada would certainly be at the top of my list.

If you're paying retail:

1. Tahoe or yukon
2. Wagoneer
3, Expedition
4. Armada
5. Sequoia

But Armada you can usually get below retail and it moves up the list. Sometimes they want a dealer markup for yukons, so they can move down.

My wife really likes the look of the Yukon Denali. I guess we will be getting that. lol.

Just drive all of them to see what you like the best, you could surprise yourself. I haven't been in a new Armada or Sequoia so I can't comment on those but I have rented Wagoneers, Expeditions, and Tahoes over the last year for work so I can give input on those. I liked the Wagoneer the best out of those three, but I'd never buy one due to reliability and residual value issues. The Expedition wasn't far behind the Wagoneer, my main gripe is the gauge cluster was a video screen, maybe a small issue but I didn't like that aspect. I really didn't care for the Tahoe, and I'm not anti-GM, I used to own a Silverado back in the day that I had no issues with but I just didn't enjoy driving the Tahoe.

If I was in the market for a full size SUV I'd go drive an Armada and Expedition and pick between those two. I believe the Sequoia has some drivetrain issues currently and also the cargo area isn't flat either.
