I'm CHEAP. I took some of the plastic bags that Amazon shipments come in and filled them with 10lb of sand...wrapped in duct tape and carry those in a normal backpack.

50lb of play sand is $8 at Ace/HD/Lowes vs 50lbs of metal from Rogue/Ruck/etc. at >$100

* I dug the 20lbs of my weight out of the flowerbed

My 5 year old comes with me almost every time I lift now - usually not the whole time, but she's there. I don't even have to ask her, she usually is the one asking me to do it.

She's knocking out chinups and was able to do about a 12 inch box jump on to the couch the other day.

They're always watching. I can't imagine how different our day to day lives would be if I was still the fat, useless turd I was 3 years ago.

This is genuinely impressive. Reminds me of those fitness videos you see where the dudes are lifting water jugs full of dirt on either end of a metal pole

Only problem is that it's starting to cause a problem for the zippers of an otherwise outstanding daypack.

Looking at some other options - but again, I'm cheap and don't want to spend $100+ for this.

Good for you man! I am a recovering cardio junkie. While I have not forsaken it as I do think its important, the gym and heavy lifting really is the best bang for your buck.

As much as we joke about Cardio, it is essential for overall health. That doesn't mean I have to like it or want to do it though…

Yes, unless it's squats. Anything over 6 reps on squats is cardio

Cardio will stay, just need better physical health as I get older.

I was doing dumbbell bench press this morning when my left arm just sort of gave out mid rep. Right arm was fine. I shook it out and drank some water and tried again and was able to do a few more reps before it gave out again.

Is that normal? Just fatigue? Something I should be worried about?

There's no pain. It just felt like it suddenly lost all strength. I worked my triceps and shoulders pretty hard before. I also didn't sleep great last night, not sure if that could play a factor.

How did it give out? Did you just sort deplete yourself and couldn't press it up anymore and it started falling/shifting over? Or did you have some sort of rotation with the dumbbell?

My bet would be the triceps were fatigued and you had the chest strength to press them up but not the triceps strength in the top end of the movement. Your front delts could've been beat too. If dumbbell press is a main lift of yours for chest, I would do those sooner in your program before you knock out your isolation stuff, but that's just me.

It was like I suddenly lost all strength in that arm. Got real shaky and weak.

Good point about doing chest first. Now that you mention it, I remember being taught that a long time ago.

I'm thinking that arm was just overworked and had enough lol

With dumbbells if you do not have the triceps strength that will happen. Once the dumbbell starts to collapse inward, your arm will give out immediately.

As the poster above me said it is a triceps strength issue. Work on that and use lighter weights for now.

Cool, thanks for the info. It hasn't happened before today but I'm getting more comfortable and pushing myself a little more so I'm sure I was more fatigued than I've been.

That's a good thing! I would stick to keeping your compound lifts early in the workout and then go into your isolation stuff.

Regardless, sounds like you're doing a good job of challenging yourself. Keep it up!

I challenge myself almost everyday that I workout and most days I am able to successfully achieve some sort of victory - no matter how small it is. That feeling of winning/improvement absolutely has an impact on the brain, in addition the known dopamine effects of actual physical exercise.

The days I don't work out I don't feel bad but I definitely don't feel as accomplished as the days I do lift.

I'm admittedly a bit crazy, but I keep a spreadsheet of every workout I've done and track my progress. I set quarterly and yearly goals that I work towards.

My goal is the complete every workout as programmed, and the progress so far has taken care of itself. Holding myself accountable and the discipline to do it makes me happy.

I also make sure my kids know they're always welcome in the garage during my workouts because I want them to pick up the habit. Knowing they're learning by watching me is motivation enough.

Finally, being able to do things I couldn't do when I was a fat sack of uselessness always brings surprise happiness at random moments. The other day we sold a huge piece of furniture and 2 guys came over that bought it. I took one end and they took the other and they were genuinely surprised I lifted it no problem. It's silly stuff like that that make you realize you're doing something that most people don't bother with or have much exposure to.

Little less rambling of an answer - journal and track your progress and set realistic short term goals and maybe some outlandish long term ones - you'll surprise yourself at how close you get to the long term ones if your short term ones are realistic.

Progress pictures are also a great way to remind yourself of where you started to where you are now.

Lifting to improve my physique is inherently rewarding for me. It's a direct visual statement of the hard work I've done over 20+ years

I have two main hobbies- cooking and lifting.
With cooking, I get to eat the results of my work
With lifting, I get to wear the results of my work
