I've recently started doing this. While I know that there are tons of benefits to it, I'm sick and tired of having to go to the bathroom all the time.

You'll eventually adjust. You'll feel so much better too. I've lost 22 pounds since March from just drinking a lot more water and eliminating restaurant food (aside from a once per week splurge).

Peeing all the time > chronically dehydrated

As mentioned above, you'll eventually adjust to it unless you have some underlying bladder issue or similar. It is amazing how many people don't drink enough water.

Keep it up - it's worth it!

I do it as well. It's a constant drinking session

I try it but I give up. I'm literally in the bathroom every 10 minutes. And forget being able to sleep. Even if I taper back several hours before bed.

For me the biggest thing I noticed was an increase in energy and a huge decrease in bloating.

Honestly, a gallon probably isn't even enough if you're working out daily in this weather.....

Agree. I'm at least 1.5 - 2 gallons a day. I'm about a gallon during my workouts alone.

Oddly enough, the more water I drink, the more thirsty I get!

This. Then I had one day last week where I drove 6.5 hours to SPI. Didn't drink most the day so that I wouldn't need to stop more than once. By the time I got there I looked so scrawny because I wasn't carrying around all the extra water weight I normally have.

I'll be that guy and say that the standard "gallon a day" mantra is probably junk science and not necessary or beneficial to most people. It greatly depends on your activity level and lifestyle.

A gallon of water on days when I'm sitting in the office for 8 hours does nothing but make me urinate frequently. There's also the negative (but rare) consequences of drinking too much water.

Sure, it's healthier to drink water over coke or alcohol but it's just not logical to force down a gallon a day. I like to work outside and exercise in the heat. Of course, if I'm doing that I will drink more.

Also consider that easy, cheap access to clean water is a relatively new development in human history. So as for overall nutrition and healthy eating, cutting out processed foods and sugar is a much greater benefit that choking down that much water.

IMO. Not a doctor.

Also, I'm sweating seawater. No way I'm replacing it with tap water.

14 lbs/day of water? I just, I mean, even after a 12 mile run in the heat, that would be a stretch. If it makes you feel better, whatever. But I'd have to feel awful in the first place to try that. How we've gotten to the point where people took an out of context paper about 8-10 glasses per day, and now doubled it in an even more extreme direction, is beyond my knowledge.

But, if it's working as part of a weight loss plan, good job.

I agree with this.

There are definite harms to drinking too much water. Can some people benefit from a gallon a day? Absolutely. And some may need even more. But the average person doesn't need this much thanks to modern day air conditioning.

I would say that you should look at your urine and use that to determine how much you should be drinking. If it looks like orange gatorade, or any darker, you probably need to drink more. If it looks almost as clear as water, you probably can cut back. Should be round about straw colored for most people, most of the time.

Something I heard a long time ago, that I think makes the most sense, is that you should drink roughly half your body weight in ounces. I think that's a good starting point, but everyone is different obviously.

I've always heard half an ounce to one ounce for every lb of body weight. Depending on activity level.

I did a sweat test a couple summers ago. During a 30-40 minute run, can't remember exact distance/time, I drank 15 oz of water during the run and still lost 4 pounds.

I started this too about a month ago after emergency kidney stone removal. Some days it's more challenging than others but the threat of another stone keeps me motivated. I have found that I'm not peeing as much as I was the first 2 weeks. I do think that I've probably lived most of my life at least a little bit dehydrated after seeing how my body is adjusting. I haven't seen any major changes to weight but I do think I've had an uptick in daily energy. I stopped drinking soda all together. I wasn't drinking more than one per day before but now I don't have room for them!

If the human body were as high maintenance as some of you seem to think, we would've been extinct centuries ago.

I'd venture to guess the typical poster on this forum is not equal to your typical person in America today....Nobody is saying you'll just drop dead if you don't drink a gallon of water a day. But lots of people try to do things like improve their diet and exercise more to just be healthier, why would hydration be any different?

Look around. Fat, unfit, unhealthy people seem to be able to reproduce just fine. Doesn't make it a good way to live.

I am sure I drink more than a gallon a day but I am active and often work outside. Don't do triathlons anymore but during long rides I would have a ton of water, probably close to 5 gallons on long brick days (long ride and run off the bike). It's hot in Texas

I don't understand this at all.

I workout a ton. CrossFit, no A/C in the heat.
I drink a shaker bottle of water mixed with Amino Energy before my workout in th emorning
another 8 ounces with AG1
Another shaker with Amino Energy at some point during the day
a few kirkland carbonated waters
maybe 1 more shaker bottle full of water

that's probably all I have every day. I'm not thirsty. My piss isn't really yellow. I don't ever feel like i need water during workouts.

I don't see what benefit I would get from drinking more water.

Half your body weight
(I weigh 230, so 115)
Change pounds to ounces = 115 ounces.
Minimum I should drink per day would be 115 ounces liquid (included coffee, tea, etc)

Drinking an arbitrary 1 gallon per day without some reference to body weight seems a little silly.

Everyone's body is different. Some people require more than others. If you see good benefits, great! Keep it up. If you don't, then keep doing what you're doing.

Personally I feel a lot better since I increased my intake.

At least my creatine bottle reads that I need 120 oz of water per day if I'm taking the full 5 grams. I drink north of 100 and some days I get to 120.

40 lbs of water. That's amazing. It would be interesting to evaporate all your sweat and urine to see what's left.

When you're thirsty, drink water.

Your hydration requirements have now been met in the appropriate amounts. Your body doesn't operate off a spreadsheet.

At that time I was using a custom Infinit mix so it would have. See how well it was actually replacing everything.

I normally had a few Bonk Breaker bars and some electrolyte gummies.

Still doing it? How do you feel? I suffer tinnitus for the last three years and what all the doctors from Staten Island audiology said to me, it is extremely important to stay hydrated for me, otherwise the ringing will be worse. I have no idea how to do it, as i always forget to drink water during the day, especially if i am at work.
