Hoping someone else has experienced my problem and can fix me!

I run six days a week and have for years. Generally 30-35 miles per week. I have been loosely following Hal's plan for me for the Seaside Half 2/15/26. I say loosely because a) sleet week and b) conference in Vegas last week (not a great place to run in the pre-dawn hours alone). Got home last Thursday night and ran 4 Friday then 9 Saturday. Had not checked my plan with Hal (mostly because I don't like his disappointing comments) and I was supposed to run 12 Saturday. So I took Sunday off then ran my 12 Monday morning.

After my 12 miler, my middle toes felt like they were broken, though they did not bother me at all while running. So painful! They look kind of bruised. And swollen. And the nails on my middle toes look white. They are not my longest toes - my second toes are longer than my big toe, and they are sore sometimes, but I have never, ever had any issue whatsoever with my middle toes. I usually run 7-10 miles on Saturdays, so 12 was not really much of a stretch. The pain woke me up several times Monday night.

I ran yesterday (Tuesday) - just five miles - and probably made the situation worse. I did take off today. Am thinking maybe I take off until the race?

I have been running in the same series of Hokas for a couple of years now. My current pair is fairly new - probably less than 200 miles. I do sometimes clench when I am running if my laces have loosened - I have been super conscientious about having my shoes properly tied up lately so I do not believe that was a problem. I think it must be mechanical, right? Since same toes on both feet?

HELP!

Go get the stiffest pair of carbon-plated racing shoes you can find! Zero flexibility on those, effectively a brace for your toes!

To answer this question, it's probably a good idea to take off until at least the day before. A little bit of mileage the day before will help with performance, but if that's too much, then get on a stationary bike for 20-30 minutes pre-race day.

Trim your toenails
Try different socks
Toe yoga - with your feet flat on the ground, try moving big toe, then 4 toes, then try moving each toe individually. Repeat a few times, do a couple of times per day.

Tiny discomfort like that is the worst and messes with your head!! You'll probably be fine on race day.

Roll your feet with a lacrosse ball? Golf ball would work too.

racing in shoes you've never run in before sounds like GREAT advice.

Was traveling today - thank you for all the advice. I have been on the stationery bike instead of running. Inflammation is still there but definitely improving. May not run until race day then amputate middle toes following the race.

Thank you again for the ideas!

I just saw this thread, but I am glad you were able to receive and heed advice from others. I will be running the Austin Half Marathon on Sunday, and this will be my 12th half marathon. Good luck in the Seaside Half Marathon!
