I guess this is why the Scots called the English the Sassenach.
Also, Saxony remains a province of modern Germany but is located southeast of the old location shown here.

I'm not clear on whether the Lady of the Lake from whom King Arthur received Excalibur was entirely made up by Sir Thomas Malory as part of "Le Morte d'Arthur" or if there was an earlier version, but the Welsh Mabinogion has the "Sword in the Stone" tale regarding Arthur so that could be Mallory's inspiration.
