Ishmael, have you ever heard of stop loss?

the army changes a soldier's duty station and time of service/enlistment frequently during war time. Look, when you raise your right hand, you belong to Uncle Sam.

If you attend a Military Academy your first duty is to serve out your obligation you made to your Country in good faith.

He will be able to play after he's done with his tour. Quit crying. He won't be the first.

i'm sure this young man understands what is taking place, and has expressed no problem with it, although if he did, it would not be smart.

having said that, he should have never been able to be drafted, he should have been told from day one, after two years you can play.

Oh, and there are currently 3 guys in the NFL right now that played at a service academy, did their 2 years and made a team.
So an average of 1 per service Academy and a total of 0.16% of the NFL being from service Academies is good evidence that a lot of those guys get shots?

Of course not, he would be crucified if he did.

A much better compromise.

Going into a service academy should be an indication to anyone that there is at least a six year commitment to keep. Everything else plays second fiddle to that commitment.

He already is by his classmates that are serving in Iraq. He's stated that himself and that he's had a tough time with it.

If he didn't want to serve he shouldn't of taken a contract and let the US taxpayers pay for his education. He could of left after his freshman, and I think, sophomore year with no obligation. From what I'm reading it's nice to know this guy is willing to go and serve his time, unlike that Navy guy a few years ago that was all over tv begging to be let out of his commitment

Not "Army Strong", but "Army Stupid".

The Army pays huge sums of money to advertise and sponsor sports teams. This kid is cheap advertisement by comparison. If he gets cut, he comes back.

The fact the Army has decided to mismanage yet another resource is sad, but not surprising.

The difference is that these kids are being recruited to West Point and Annapolis being told "if you are drafted, we'll let you play".

That is a flat out lie on the Army's part.

Honestly, how many guys who go to service Academies get a chance to play in the NFL? ONE every so many years? He's never going to have another shot at it. This is NFL football. By the time he gets back, his shot will probably be long gone.

Do you realize how much of a t-sip you sound like? "Why would this recruit go to A&M, OU, or LSU... we're Texas!"

This is the NFL! Well, this is the real-world and we are a nation at war... Campbell sounds like he is being a MAN about and will serve his obligations, not the fans' whims.

Surely you are not implying that he could not play in today's NFL? He's one of the greatest to ever play the game, and he played it before the league was watered down by expansion.

Hey, bummer, but the needs of the military come first. He knew that was his first obligation. Even if he was allowed to compete in the draft, the military can still recall him anyway (called a "stop loss" or "return to active duty", depending on the situation).

He can still get back in later if he keeps his nose to the grindstone.

I've had the privilege of meeting this young man's family. They are good people. I believe he went to the Point expecting to serve, but this opportunity came up, and the Army thought it was a good one.

Now that things have changed, he'll continue to do as told.

As others have pointed out, about 1/4 of each Academy class drops out sometime after their appointment. If they do it before the first day of their junior year, they owe Uncle Sam zero time and zero money. Even among those that graduate, a large portion serves 5 years active and retires.

If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at those folks, not the Caleb Campbells of the world.

Though be advised that the Academies are happy to be shed of those who don't have the desire to graduate. They consider the dropouts the cost of doing business.

Speaking of West Point cadets I know, there was another from the Texas Panhandle who was medically disqualified from serving. A sports injury resulted in nerve damage to his legs, and they allowed him to graduate, but did not commission him. He was greatly disappointed, but these guys do what they are told.

i dont want to spend 2 weeks in the middle of my school semester in Wisconsin falling behind in all my classes, but i signed a paper 4 years ago saying that I would defend the country at all costs. Sacrifices are made everyday for this country and this guy should feel honored to be able to serve his country. He chose to attend West Point-- he knew his mission and when he gets out, he can continue this mission. a good friend of mine wrestles for the Minnesota Gophers. One of the top programs in the country. He's sacrificed his Junior season for an 18 month tour in Iraq. When he comes home, he'll work his ass off and get back on the team.

this Leiutenant has spent the past four years learning 7 things.

Loyalty - Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. constitution, the Army, and other soldiers

Duty - Fulfill your obligations

Respect - Treat others as you would expect to be treated (golden rule)

Selfless Service - Put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own

Honor - Live up to all the Army values

Intergrity - Do what's right legally and morally

Personal Courage - face fear, danger, and adversity

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.

he's a soldier. if he wants it bad enough --- he'll come back and get it. he'll understand his country comes first.

I've always thought it would be good for every American citizen to serve their country for two years after they've finished with education.

Build or maintain public works, teach, clean, mow grass, plant trees, do research, be a health professional if they have that schooling, serve in the military, etc., etc.

Whatever public service job that is commensurate with their educational level or desired by their personal preference could be their assignment.

Make it everybody's duty and privilege to serve for a minimum of two years simply because they have already benefited and will continue to benefit from being citizens of our country.

It would give every participant a personal stake and involvement in the USA, simply because they would feel they had done their part and didn't just get rewarded by their birthright.

Let your birthright be to get the chance to contribute and to receive your earned reward and to gain the pride that comes from being a productive American.

It could be a chance to mature or get a head start in a career or to learn enough about one thing to choose to do something completely different.

I think a required national program like this would increase our American pride and productivity.

American opportunity would be the freedom to be educated until you left school and then to have some choice in fulfilling an obligation to serve your/our country in a meaningful way for at least two years before getting to spend the rest of your life reaping the considerable benefits of being an American citizen.

Just my opinion.....

this is one of those things that the people who have never had the flag on their shoulder will never really understand. You don't have to be in the miltary to be a proud American, but the feeling is so much more undescribable when you've had that flag on your arm.

Pledge of Allegiance, Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America ---- I can't stand through them without fighting back tears. This kid is going to do good things for his country and then come home and live out his childhood dream. I'm happy for him.

Wouldn't the kid be doing more making public service commercials and PR and recruiting than being a butter bar in Afghanistan?

The military doesn't have a good rep to most Americans, and this would be genius PR and marketing.

I'll start by agreeing that duty absolutely supercedes football and everything else, in all cases. Our oaths bind us.

However, 2LT Campbell was acting under DA policy and the Army milked all the pub they could off his draft prospects. This is a classic bait and switch, and the Army just looked dishonest to thousands of prospective recruits who follow football and read ESPN. Much better to have simply let him play, hope he made the team and became a lightning rod for US Army recruiting.

We're only talking about one new lieutenant here, the message sent far outweighs Caleb Campbell's military contribution at the moment. That message is "We'll tell you you can do one thing, then pull the plug at the least appropriate time". Those of us who serve know this and live with it, but this doesn't look good to the next crop who are weighing their options as we speak. Bad move by DA.

I was a SGT before I went to A&M, son of COL, grandson of COL. I was stop lossed for 2 years with no complaint. When you go to an academy it isn't only tax dollars, it is somebosy else's spot. The only people that seem to be complaining about this are people who haven't made that choice to serve. Screw the Lions and the 7th round draft pick.
