I was a combat tested SGT before I went to A&M, son of COL, grandson of COL. I was stop lossed for 2 years with no complaint. When you go to an academy it isn't only tax dollars, it is somebosy else's spot. The only people that seem to be complaining about this are people who haven't made that choice to serve. Screw the Lions and the 7th round draft pick.

I agree with bleedmaroondad and Ag_SGT. If you are at a service academy, it's not for the snazzy uni or to make it to the NFL. The policy in place was put there in 2005. That means when this kid entered college, it was not in place. The expectation should have been to serve, and now serve he shall. Would he rather have gone to the NFL? Than pick a non-miltary school. There are a lot of them around.

Wouldn't the kid be doing more making public service commercials and PR and recruiting than being a butter bar in Afghanistan

what would he say? join the army and you can be in the NFL??

why would i want this kid as my recruiter?? fresh out of the academy with no experience. he knows nothing about how the military works and could offer me absolutely zero insight on my questions towards the active military lifestyle or advice to help motivate me throughout the start of my career other than --- "I went to west point and got drafted in the NFL!" His efforts for recruiting would be minimal, but his efforts in Afghanistan could help restore total sovereignty to an F-ed up country effecting generations of people. I hadn't even heard about this story until i read the thread, and I'm a relatively avid follower of sports.

advertisements and propaganda didnt instill the desire for me to enlist. it comes from an inner desire to be a part of something that's bigger than yourself. You can't sell that to people -- they either have it or they dont. Some people blindly join not knowing that they have it 'til they get there and those who don't have it are weeded out of the system.

Do you realize how much of a t-sip you sound like? "Why would this recruit go to A&M, OU, or LSU... we're Texas!"

This is the NFL! Well, this is the real-world and we are a nation at war... Campbell sounds like he is being a MAN about and will serve his obligations, not the fans' whims.

I'm guessing that would make you a #1 type Aggie then. This is a completely different situation, and frankly your calling me a sip is a pretty lame response.

This kid was told that if he became a pro-athlete, he could play. No beef from the military.

There have been a couple others go straight into the pro's because of this rule. No beef from the Military.

This kid was allowed to work out with pro scouts and attend the combine. No beef from the Military.

This guy was allowed to enter and become drafted. No beef from the military.

That is until they decide to turn a 180 on him and knife him in the back. If you want to talk about obligations and honor, it isn't him skimping on the oaths here. He is doing what he is told, it's the higher ups that are jerking him around.

If he had been told otherwise I wouldn't have an issue with it, but in the end, he was lied to. If the DoD had a problem with the army's policy, they should have never let them enact it, or make it null and void after this.

And don't even try to compare the Service Academy guys in the NFL to our guys. We've got 28 currently on an NFL roster. All of them combined have got 3.

quote:
Surely you are not implying that he could not play in today's NFL? He's one of the greatest to ever play the game, and he played it before the league was watered down by expansion.
I'm a cowboy fan, and I'm going to have to say, maybe, but the chances aren't great. He would be in an uphill battle to even get a shot in camp, since rosters are small, and very few teams are going to take a shot on a qb who hasn't played serious ball in 5 years. But as you said, he is "one of the greatest ever". He won the Heisman. If the fact that he was a HEISMAN winner at a SERVICE ACADEMY doesn't prove to you that the game has changed since then, well then I don't know what to tell you.

On a related note, Babe Ruth is considered the greatest baseball player of all time. If he lived today, he would be selling hot dogs in the stands. Sports have changed a lot in recent years.

just saying.

Actually the military, firefighters, and police consistently rank as teh MOST trusted public institutions. Congress, the President, etc etc consistently rank VERY low in comparison. Regardless of which party is in office.

I can't believe some of you guys have such a big problem with this.

For the record, the person impacted has no problem with it at all.

I was at Tech in the early '90s when the first Iraq War broke out. I'm sure a lot of you guys were at A&M at that time.

I saw a lot of friends who were Nat'l Guard and reservists called up for active duty just a week before finals, barely three weeks before Christmas. One day a guy is sitting next to you preparing for an exam and graduation and the rest of his life, and the next day he's gone.

Every sinle one of those guys went and fulfilled their duty without hesitation.

Wow buddy I think you lost me at the end. Baseball is a skill sport and Babe Ruth would still own.. in fact would have Barry Bonds number if he played now. The sport is one of the few sports were I believe past players could compete with present ones... now back on topic

My money went to him becoming an officer in the Army. He signed a contracted agreement that said just that. The 2 year recruiter status would have been nice but he knew what he obligation meant and he took it freely. .. sounds to me like the Army is trying to manage their investment and that fine by me.

Hope he does well, Detriot should send him a football at least once a month so that he stays in shape. (Like Dallas did for Roger).

Last thought.. is Campbell complaining.. no.. is his family complaining no.. maybe their is a reason for that.. maybe is because the kid.. sorry scratch that .. the man knows what he promise already to do and is willing to do it.

Some of you don't seem to understand the real issue here. It's not "well, he knew when he went to West Point that he had an active duty obligation, and now he has to fulfill it." That's completely beside the point.

He was told when he went to West Point that if he got drafted by an NFL team, he'd get to play and that he could serve his active duty commitment at some recruiting office in the city of whatever team drafted him. So his whole college career was based on that assumption. Every decision he made was based on that. He gets drafted by the Lions, agrees to contract terms, and is packed and ready to go for training camp, and suddenly his whole life has changed. He's no longer a professional football player, he's an officer in the U.S. Army about to head overseas to war, and he may not ever come back, much less get to play football again.

The army waited until after the guy gets drafted (max publicity for the military, of course) and just before he gets into training camp to say "sorry, you're going overseas." I haven't seen or heard anywhere that Campbell is not ready and willing to do what he's been asked to do. But it's still pretty crappy of the army to do what they did to him. That is why people are upset about it.

He has no issue serving. He was told he could play, and it was taken away. He'll be fine. It sucks that the policy was changed.

And the person that doesn't understand the PR of an NFL player serving in the military currently...sad.

you're preaching to the choir on this one.

many of us have experience first had that the Army is just one big cluster F. Mistakes are made and lives are stretched. It happened to my dad, it happened to my grandad. It will probably happen to me.

But he signed the papers. Everyone can do all the whining in the world, but the fact is, he's the Army's weapon now and they can do whatever they want. They can tell him one thing, but policies change and people retire and information does not get to the right people. it happens.

The media act as if this is first time in history the Army has made a desicion that goes against the grain.

For those of us that have been in the military, we know that's just how it works, they tell you one thing and then the situation changes, adapt and overcome. what makes me laugh is that it's not the kid who is complaining but other people, when you sign that contract you're making a commitment to do what your country and service needs you to do. Yeah and sometimes it sucks but you suck it up and do it anyway.

The Army paid for his ride ?! WE - at least those of us that pay taxes - paid for his ride. And the ride came with a commitment for service. The odds are that his education and military experience will serve him much better in life than a shot at the NFL.

I'm stunned at some of the comments. First, every young man or woman who gets an appointment to attend USMA, USAFA, USNA or the USCGA knows exactly what he/she is geeting into. All of them are bright people. The purpose of the academies it to produce leaders for the military services. And, as someone has already posted, at great expense to taxpayers. And everyone knows that DOD can change the policies at the convenience of the government; that's not reneging. Why would there be exceptions for pro sports? (How about pro wrestling?) Any person who graduates from an academy and serves in the military should have many opportunities for a rewarding career either in the military or in civilian life, including pro sports if he/she can make the cut when the military obligation is fulfilled. If a person has any thoughts of not serving in the military after graduation, he/she should not accept the appointment. It's pretty simple!
And, not so incidentally, when one person accepts an appointment to an acadmemy, some other person does not get an appointment.

With all due respect, The Army told him that if he didn't transfer after his Sophomore year, which he had the choice and no obligation to serve, he could play in the NFL on special assignment.

The DoD and Army, going bakck on their word, screwed him. Screwed him and the Lions.

I have no problem with making him serve. He signed up for it and his chances of making the team were questionable at best anyway..

BUT, we can all agree the way the military handled this was terrible. He should have at least been given the courtesy of a binding decision from the DoD before he got drafted.
