April 1980 - On April 26, 1980 the first banana split to enter the Guinness Book of World's Records was built on Kyle Field at Texas A&M University. The split was one mile, 575 yards long and included over 34,000 ice cream scoops, 11,000 bananas, 500 gallons of topping and over 100 pounds of nuts.

We need to reclaim this title!

Sorry for so many pictures. I found photos of this event in a family album and wanted to share them. I love the old pics of Kyle and it's amazing to see how much it's changed. I remember hopping over that horseshoe wall!

Don't hang your hat on this record. Jumbo will probably blow this lead too.

They put up new speakers in Kyle I think that spring or maybe as late as '82 and played Evita loud enough for me to pick out strains from Shuhmacher. My roommate and I walked to the MSC and by All Faiths could hear clearly and by the C could hear loudly (and clearly.)

Now that was pre-internet entertainment…

Just imagine how hard that would be to do today if they had to include the bevel?

Today, the average student looks like they have consumed that banana split single handedly.

I call BS on over a mile of ice cream being constructed outdoors in College Station in a non-winter season and having it resemble anything like ice cream by the end.

And I don't believe it was one mile, 575 yards long.

Does anyone else look at old pictures and wonder how many of the people shown are still alive?

I know it's morbid.
Let's go, Brandon!

1980??? Most are still kicking with slightly larger midsections and perhaps less pronounced feathered haircuts.

Me either. If we had Facebook we wouldn't have missed this momentous day. Sad isn't it.

Back in the days of live TV commercials, in the 1950s, scoops of mashed potatoes were substituted for ice cream, under the hot studio lights. Might've been that.

Surprised they didn't hang this title outside of Kyle.

That was my fish year. Yes, it was a runny blob that used to be ice cream. By the time I was given my spoon there wasn't much to eat. I drank most of mine.

Now y'all have to look up how piles of banana peels mysteriously appeared at Memorial Stadium on the 40 acres!!!

Didn't the last time we tried to set a world record at Kyle Field, the Guinness people rejected it because they said it was planned?

Can't remember if it was largest student section, or largest college football game attendance, or loudest game, but it was sometime in the last 20 years.

I can't even get up to a mile in those pictures. Maybe 500-600 yards (very optimistically) in the design on the field, and then another thousand from wrapping around the track twice. Where's the rest?

It is coming in through the tunnel in the horseshoe. So who knows how far it goes outside the stadium

Not BS, I was in APO (Alpha Phi Omega) and we built it. The track was a quarter mile - the split went around the track 4 times, then into the center for the rest. Hard to tell in the pictures. We were in the Guinness Book of World Records - they had a rep there to verify.
