Lance Leipold. The dude has turned Kansas into a winner. If he can't make us into a winner then we should shut down the football program.

Urban Meyer is the only one that I think could cut through the 84 years of mediocrity.

I can't stand him, but we have Jimbo and Petrino and Durkin already- so he fits our culture of sleezebag. He would be here for maybe 4-5 years max, but we make an immediate turnaround around with our talent next year.

Agreed… nobody can save us from mediocrity except a few such as him

This would go over swimmingly with Texags.

Overall, the list of names on this thread is laughable.

Not sure if serious. If A&M wants him, he'll be the coach.

We've been in a 1 possession game with Alabama each of the past 3 seasons. Once we had the better team (today). Once we won (2021). As much as losing stinks, we have an amazing collection of talented dudes wearing maroon, with more on the way. The best path is to just support what we have. Dabo won it in year 8, I believe.

Just looked. And I'm seeing year nine. Year eight he lost the championship game. Year 7 he won 10; year 6 he won 11; year 5 he won 11; year 4 he won 10.

Jimbo Fisher is not Dabo. One had a consistently upwards trajectory. The other is Jimbo.

This.

Yesterday sucked, but reality is we were within a few plays of beating Alabama with a mediocre O Line and our backup QB. Secondary needs work but the team is close. Blowing it up now doesn't make much sense to me.

Gentlemen. It's about developing relationships with players. It's about teaching kids just out of high school how to play football and become young men. It's about teaching. Coaching. But mainly teaching.

Hire a high school coach. We have some AWESOME high school coaches in Texas. Put them on a reasonable contract and go get someone that know Texas coaches well.

Put them in charge. Give them everything they need and give them a great salary tied to bonus for performance.

That's it. It's not the who that matters. It's how you structure their contract that matters.

How much of this is what A&M has done as far as build up facilities and how much of this is what Fisher has done? I contend that it's not all Fisher but it's about A&Ms willingness to spend money on football.

Plus, Urbana's ego is so big that he would shut out any of the outside influence. And, he already had the established relationships with the aforementioned high school coaches in Texas.

Dabo was winning beginning 2012. Beat a loaded LSU team in bowl game. Then beat urban meyer and oh st, oklahoma, then started competing for championships. We can only dream of a decade like that.

Why bother. You'll spend close to $100,000,000 to buy out the contracts of Jimbo & his staff. Pay another 50-75 million to bring in a new staff & we'll all be *****ing & calling for their heads in 4-5 years anyways- Deja vu all over again. Let's just save the money & keep *****ing about this staff.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Article is from 2015…
Quote:

Let's take a look at the national championship winning coaches since the turn of the century:

2000: Bob Stoops, 2nd year at Oklahoma
2001: Larry Coker, 1st year at Miami
2002: Jim Tressel, 2nd year at Ohio State
2003: Nick Saban, 4th year at LSU; Pete Carroll, 3rd year at USC
2004: Pete Carroll, 4th year at USC
2005: Mack Brown, 8th year at Texas
2006: Urban Meyer, 2nd year at Florida
2007: Les Miles, 3rd year at LSU
2008: Urban Meyer, 4th year at Florida
2009: Nick Saban, 3rd year at Alabama
2010: Gene Chizik, 2nd year at Auburn
2011: Nick Saban, 5th year at Alabama
2012: Nick Saban, 6th year at Alabama
2013: Jimbo Fisher, 4th year at Florida State
2014: Urban Meyer, 3rd year at Ohio State

Over the last decade and a half, coaches that ultimately win national championships take an average of 3.08 years to get there (excluding repeat winners). Remove outlier Mack Brown from the equation and the average drops to 2.63 years. Even coaches that lost national title games of late have done it quickly: Chip Kelly and Mark Helfrich (each in their second years at Oregon), Gus Malzahn (first year at Auburn), and Brian Kelly (third year at Notre Dame).

That's not to say these coaches got to the national championship game entirely on their own. Quite the opposite, in fact. Most of them used ingredients supplied to them and managed to make a meal their predecessor never could.
Continuing on…
2015: Nick Saban (9th year at Alabama)
2016: Dabo Swinney (9th year at Clemson)
2017: Nick Saban (11th year at Alabama)
2018: Dabo Swinney (11th year at Clemson)
2019: Ed Orgeron (4th year at LSU)
2020: Nick Saban (14th year at Alabama)
2021: Kirby Smart (6th year at Georgia)
2022: Kirby Smart (7th year at Georgia)
2023: ???

Kirby Smart (8th year at Georgia)
Jim Harbaugh (9th year at Michigan)
Steve Sarkisian (3rd year at Texas)
Ryan Day (6th year; 5th full year at Ohio State)
Mike Norvell (4th year at Florida State)
James Franklin (10th year at Penn State)
Kalen DeBoer (2nd year at Washington)
Dan Lanning (2nd year at Oregon)
Lincoln Riley (2nd year at USC)
Brent Venables (2nd year at Oklahoma)
Nick Saban (17th year at Alabama)
Mack Brown (5th year at North Carolina)

Between the transfer portal and NIL, this idea we still need 5 years, 6 years, 7 years, coach needs to get "his guys", just wait it out, give it time, I don't agree.

Deion bringing in 50 something transfers. (Not saying I want Deion. Not really. He is the current thing.)
Dykes at TCU going to the NC in his first year (Yeah, yeah I get it, they've come back to earth this year, currently 3-3)

And for the love of football, stop giving contract extensions after ONE good year. You sign these guys to 5/6 year deals and then tear them up after a year? What?!

Sumlin got an extension after his first year and then again after his second year.
Jimbo went 9-1 in a covid year, got his current fat guaranteed extension (despite going 8-5/9-4 the previous two years)

Mike Elko seems to be a common name in threads like these, but even if we got him, it's only a matter of time where he ends up on the Aggie HC Wall of Shame along with Fran, Sherman, Sumlin..... and the jury is still out on Jimbo.

We had threads just like this during all of those eras.

You wanna save money? Go Div 3 and only recruit in state and use Texas hs coaches. But good luck filling Kyle to pay off its bonds with the sudden loss of $55 million per year in media revenue. But it is the right thing to do if you're too cheap to hire a good coach.

I'm not opposed to four year contracts, but you'll pay a signing bonus that pays off their previous buy out and provides the security the base salary can't cover.

Your REAL gripe is the best Aggie season since 1939 upped his annual pay and the buyout. And to add salt to the wound Mond was the QB that did that.

Weigman might have delivered this year if not out for the year with a rather unusual foot injury. But in reality it looks like Max is more durable and the team needs time to sort out a few position groups, so it still might have been a disappointing year. But in spite of the self-loathing more good can happen this year.

At this point, we might as well hire somebody that brings energy and media attention (for the better or worse) to Aggieland if we're going to be an average team. I'm tired of all of these "sure thing on paper" hires like Fran and Jimbo just falling apart.

Then again, the mistake I make is reading this site and not realizing I think half of the posters walk around in clown face. I think TexAgs is the equivalent of <insert_looney_political_forum_here>.

Kinda missed the point. I didn't say unqualified, I said "cheap". We've tried the "splash buy" several times. Yeah we've tried the (sorta) up and comer in Sumlin and the retread in Sherm. But the point is that money should not be the primary metric. If a coach can demand the most money it may be that he's on the downhill side of his career.

There isn't a replacement until we can hire another NC coach that isn't named Urban, or a potential bright star that is worth taking a chance on… (like Bob Stoops was back in the day, as an assistant to Spurrier, or more recently like Kirby Smart, assistant for Saban)

The only coach with the ability to overcome all the BS that has cursed this program for the last 84 years is Urban Meyer.
Period.
No ifs...ands...or buts.
And yes...he would come here.
But he would command a kings ransom in salary...making Jimbo's salary looking like chicken feed.
Question is...how bad do the BMA's want it?
Urban Meyer is the only coach with the cajones to pull it off and make it a reality.
