Our beloved Aggies were in Tacoma, Washington playing the Washington state Cougars in a game dubbed the Evergreen Bowl. The game was not a home game for Washington state as the school is a short 20 hours from Tacoma by train. The game was sold out weeks early and bleachers and stands were brought in from Pullman Washington.
Starting at 1:30 pm with more than 32000 tickets sold the Aggies fought it out over the four quarters in a sandy and broken seashell covered field to a victorious score of 7-0.
A couple of hours after the game concluded the Aggies boarded a train back to college station. The trip was to last for four days starting on Saturday and arriving on Tuesday morning early in the morning. The train travel length wasn't worrisome to the Aggies as they had travelled to and from New York City to play NYU just a couple of weeks earlier. What was different about this long trip was the news that spread like wildfire throughout the cabins of the train the next morning on December 7th. Pearl Harbor had been attacked.
A few weeks later the 1941 football team played Alabama in the 1942 cotton bowl. Some of the students withdrew from school and went immediately into the military. All members of the 1941 football team eventually went into the armed services. Some made it back to Texas A&M to finish their degree years later. Some unfortunately didn't make it back.
I collect ticket stubs and love the history behind them. Here is the ticket stub from the game.

Stadium and high school today

Great shots of the stadium and high school in this clip from the Movie "10 things I hate about you" you can see the stone cut bleachers haven't changed at all and the high school looks awesome above the stadium
