16 teams, seed based on merit not conference

Typical year
4 to 6 sec teams
4 big 10
2 to 3 acc
2 big 12
2 to 4 Other conferences remaining

When conferences rarely play each other it's kind of hard to objectively say who merits what.just put more teams in and that will answer the questions of conference strength.

This. 2024 was too long. Great season but playoffs and bowl games kept going and going and going.

Decrease number of bowl games.
Decrease number of playoff teams.
Go back to BCS.

Playoff Fix
1. Reduce to 8 teams with seeding determined after selection

2. Automatic bids for the Power 4 conference winners, but they can be seeded anywhere

3. No bye weeks or home field advantage

4. Play the quarterfinals, semifinals, and championship game at neutral sites

5. Start the playoffs on New Years Eve or New Years' Day to avoid conflict with December Saturday NFL games

6. 9-game conference schedule and one nonconference Power 4 opponent for 10 games against Power 4 opponents

1. The reality is they are more likely to expand than to contract.
2 (& 3). Just say 5 Automatic Bids for Conference winners like it is now. If a Power conference champ can't get an auto bid over 2 G5 champs, they probably aren't deserving. Like in basketball, just don't guarantee Top 4 seeds to conference champions.

3 & 4. I'm fine with no bye weeks, or at least having the bye weeks go to any of the top 4 teams, and not auto granted. However playing games at a neutral site is my strongest objection. Not only are playoff games much, much more interesting on college campuses, hosting playoff games is the strongest reason for a team to value the regular season. Otherwise, there is little incentive for a team to give full effort every week. Every loss or victory should have some potential impact on the post-season. Also, why should neutral sites or bowl locations earn the tourism dollar instead of the campus communities that support these teams the most?

5. Yes, or don't go 10 days between games and lose momentum.

6. Yes - at a minimum. The best way to improve the teams getting into the playoffs would be to require more P4 v P4 games. Quit leaving 25-33% of a regular season for pitiful contract cupcake games.

I know a lot of fans like to pad the victory total, but an improved regular season with more P4 v P4 games would help eliminate some of the pretenders. P4 teams playing 11 games against other P4 teams is a better chance to see who is better versus playing 8-9 teams within a 16 to 18 team conference, possibly 1 OOC game vs a P4 team, and then 2-3 cupcakes.
