LOL, they're still a basketball school. Their success these two seasons is impressive but they'll come back down before too long. tOSU, Michigan, PSU will make sure of it.

I wonder what the buyout is on that thing.

He's doing great there but I think they're wayyyyy overextending like we do

This will either turn out well - or be their Jimbo moment. Time will tell.

The market has to turn where schools stop guaranteeing so much $ to coaches... Indiana shows up to the party and says, wellp.

They needed to give him a deal ASAP as I bet Penn State was giving him a hard look. He brought Indiana up from the ashes in football. But they certainly didn't have to make the deal this much.

They haven't even been a basketball school in close to 40 years.

He did, to an extent. If they dont produce well in the playoffs or drop a game before then this looks really dumb. I dont think they can keep up in NIL and top paid coach.

This is Indiana...

They've gone to 14 total bowl games with a record of 3-11

We're a football school and in the past 20 years, has the same # of 10 win seasons as Indiana which is one.

We don't have room to talk.

Apples and oranges.

But yes, we've under-achieved by any measure.

Supposedly Indiana is throwing around decent NIL money for football. Mark Cuban and a couple other big hitters. Not Michigan, Ohio State or large SEC school money, but in the same neighborhood as Penn State. While they have some talent they've developed, a lot of their key contributors are junior/senior transfers.

Which is why I say it isn't sustainable.

You either produce or the NIL is going to dry up.

Once you get a fanbase with bloodthirst then it is hard to turn it down unless they just gradually fade away

They won't fire him anytime soon that's for sure. It's Indiana. When they fall back to mediocrity they will hang there hat on these couple years and just be content. They aren't a football school and never will be. What a dumb contract for them to hand out. Good for the coach though. Zero expectations to win at the highest level no matter what "they" say.

Cignetti is a great coach IMO. Great coaches are able to beat more talented teams with excellent fundamentals, scheme, and motivation. Cig did that against Oregon last weekend. He also has a great staff which is super important.

That being said guranteed contracts don't incentivize winning, although I think Cig has enough of an ego to stay motivated.

It's definitely a risk but if Mark Cuban and his buddies continue to fill the NIL piggy bank, I think Cignetti is a good enough coach to keep Indiana competitive with an occasional run to the playoffs.

Will they become the next Bama? Probably not.

But if they average 9 wins a season under Cignetti throughout the life of his contract, I think it's well worth the investment.

People thought the same thing about Florida when Spurrier was there. "When he leaves, they'll return to mediocrity..." Florida had something like 7 or fewer 9-win seasons prior to the '90s when Spurrier got there and had never won 10 games in a season.

I'm not saying he will duplicate Spurrier's success and spearhead Indiana into 3 national titles in the next 2 decades, but saying they'll revert to "down before long," without anything more than apparent wishful thinking, is nonsense.
