I think the '91 and '93 teams were both better than '92. '91 was the best, IMO, but we had a game at Tulsa where we turned the ball over something like seven times and lost by one point.

Right on!

My recollection is the Cotton Bowl could have invited FSU who was ranked 4 but the CB bypassed them for ND. The CB was always infatuated with ND, I think because they played tu in the 70 CB and it was their first appearance in a bowl game in many years.

FSU was pissed, as was I, because FSU was higher ranked but an easier matchup as they were built more on speed and quickness while ND was more brute force. ND ran between the tackles and had their way with our defensive front most of the game.
So we ran a big 12 defense against an SEC offense?!?

Man, y'all have amazing memories. I can barely remember the game against LSU, let alone 1992.

You're right. I forgot about that angle.
The outrage that year wasn't that we weren't playing for the national title, but that we felt slighted that we were playing Notre Dame instead of higher ranked Florida State. Really came back to bite us.
The one who drove the decision was Cotton Bowl chair Hoss Brock. He was the one who famously said of U of H "Half of their fans will be eating in 7-11s and the other half will be robbing them". Fun times.

I was ecstatic about the season we had. But I was pissed at the national reaction. The two previous seasons, there were literally split national champions crowned. Colorado and Georgia Tech in 1990. Miami and Washington in 1991. Yet at the end of 1992, no one was talking about a split title of any kind. It was 100% East Coast bias in favor of the Canes and Tide, both also sporting undefeated records and slated to play in the Orange Bowl. A&M was never an option to win a claim to a national title under those circumstances. Of course, it's all moot since the DMN published their sip-driven hit piece that resulted in significant players declared ineligible for the Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame stream-rolled the Ags.

Only game Bucky missed all year. Jeff Granger looked amazing in building a 21-3 halftime lead and then we tanked defensively in the 2nd half. Allowed the biggest comeback on all time ( at that time). Useless trivia - Gus Frerotte lead the comeback and he also had the largest comeback in NFL history a few year later

How big a lead are we talking about?

Don't recall the QB's name, but the guy who played for the Bills in defeating the Oilers in a 1992 playoff game, a game which the Oilers led 35-3 or something like that, had also led the Maryland Terps to a similar come from behind win.

The NEXT Cotton Bowl though….talk about a heartbreaker/nail biter.
I think we'd still be seeing highlights of the play has Leland caught that lateral.

I got to see that one in person. Still hurts.

I was there as well - although the "hook & ladder" play was at the opposite end of the field and I didn't get a very good view of it - seats were down low near the 10 yard line if I recall.

it is wild to think that Jeff Granger owns one of the Ags' wins in Baton Rouge. He had a nice game

it was a rare afternoon game in Death Valley

Wasn't that when we first tried to make the move to the SEC when Arkansas left?

I believe that was Frank Reich.

I'm going to add, I feel like there's a pretty wide gap between that season and this one. The 92 team had a lot of promise and achieved a lot but simply put, our offense was dismal. There were high hopes for Granger due to his poise and passing as a freshman that didn't come to fruition. Some felt like his role as an ace pitcher on the baseball team was part of it. Don't know but he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in 92. Cory Pullig, a true freshman, ultimately took over and we became ultra ultra conservative. That was entirely ineffective against any top team.

This year's team can be explosive in the pass game, can grind it out on the ground and anything in between. And we are very solid defensively. I don't know how we finish but this team is built to win it all.

We were the ones that turned the SEC down. Then and several times after that.

In the Tulsa game in '91, I think we were up 28-10 at the half, but Bucky got injured (throwing shoulder maybe?) and we ended up losing 35 -34 or something close to that. Very painful loss.

Even though we were #3 at the end of the '92 regular season (and that was probably fair), there was still a chance for us to win a championship depending on how the other bowls went. But, the DMN (writer was an alum of you know which school) published the story about players getting paid but not actually working. Going into the CB minus some of our best dudes playing a very good ND team was not a recipe for success.

Losing those players that were suspended for being paid hurt us with the recruiting in the south Dallas area especially Carter HS. I remember watching that Notre Dame team having their way with us in the Cotton Bowl.

that is correct after I double checked - brought Maryland back to win 42-40 and Bills over Oilers from a 35-3 deficit. After checking , I don't know how the heck I came up Gis Frerotte. My memory isn't quite as good as I thought

TMF sent out an email and referenced that this was our best poll showing since 1992. Looked up the season, and we were 12-0, but not slated to play either of the other undefeated teams (Miami and Alabama). Was this considered a snub at the time, because it meant that there was no way we could have won the national title, no matter what happened in the bowl?

Unfortunately we lost badly 28-3 versus ND in the Cotton, so I guess it was moot..

In November we played at Houston and during halftime Lee Corso was arguing that a one loss Florida St should leap frog us in the polls if we didn't blow out the Cougars. The next week FSU moved ahead of us. there was a bit of anger at Lee back then, lol.

And the reason I've disliked him this long!

I was 13 years old and it was cold and miserable. I still hate Rick Mirer.
