The current setup was never meant to get the best 12 teams in the playoff. It was meant to get most of the best teams while giving the smaller conferences some representation. We can all complain about seeding for us (or any other team), but that will happen in any system.

Nothing will change until we go to at least 16 teams: 10 conference champions + 6 at large bids.

The smaller conferences should have NO representation.

They are a waste of space in this playoff. Just another everyone gets a trophy move.

This isn't fair to them or the deserving teams whose spots they are taking.

They need their own playoff. They need to be in a different division of football. Everyone knows they aren't competitive with these big teams.

My thought is Div 1 football will eventually have tiers based upon the level of NIL money used once it is fully regulated. There will still be cheating as per the old days but penalties could exist for that. We need a commisioner and third party oversight.
I also think eventully the smaller conferences will be directly tied to major conferences in agreements for buy games and minor sports

Some argue for a smaller playoff, so you could just look at it like a 10 team playoff with two extra teams for $h!+s and giggles.

If there's some crazy upset, great. If not ... the little guys get some exposure for a great season.

Time to go to a 2-tiered system

Playoff bracket for Group of 5.

Playoff bracket for Power 4.

Even high school football has 2 divisions within the same category. 6A, 5A, etc.

Everybody keep whining about expanding and getting more teams in.

Mostly espn wants more teams in…

But would any of those teams have a chance. Heck no.

Just like the ncaa basketball tournament. Everybody complains about teams being left out, but no team lower than an 8 seed has ever won, so 32 would seem to be the right number and the rest is just for tv ratings.

Goal isn't to select the 12 best teams, it's to make the most money. The 7-8 best teams + a few Cinderellas and under dogs is more profitable than what you're proposing.

A 12 team playoff is so unnecessarily broad that it's almost impossible to leave out the deserving contenders. Over half of the bracket is in for the mere purpose of fleshing out the bracket. A three middle schoolers aided by a paralegal could "get the big things right."

Terrible idea. Last thing we need is a MAC team competing for the title. At large would be tOSU, Oregon, Ole Miss, us, OU, Bama. If ACC fixes their tiebreakers at least then Miami would get in, otherwise Duke.

Only good thing about this lulz take is that ND would be left out again!

Silly that they have two replay games in the first round. It would not have taken much to avoid the Tulane ole miss and ok bama rematches.

And if memory serves, that dark horse/Cinderella 8 seed team was - out of nowhere! - Villanova.

You could go to 24 teams and solve a bunch of problems. Just set it up similar to FCS. Top 8 get a first round bye. Seeds 9 thru 16 have a home game against seeds 17 thru 24. Another set of home games in 2nd round. You'd probably have to have some bowl games in the mix after that.

Teams left out in the mid-20s will complain but it will be hollow. All of those teams will have 3-4 losses. And the teams that beat them will likely be in playoffs.

If you have 24 teams, you could allow several G5 teams. Maybe the top 3 conferences champs from G5. Or guarantee at least two of them. I think you have to throw them a bone. I don't think the two-tiered system will work in long term.

Disagree.

I'm not going to watch Ole Miss play Tulane or Oregon play JMU. I couldn't possibly care less about those games.

But if Ole Miss was to play Notre Dame and Oregon was to play, say Texas, I would absolutely watch those games.

And I seriously doubt I'm the only one with that attitude in the country.

It's unwatchable tv and takes away from the competitive nature of a playoff system. They can have their own powder puff tournament that they can air on espnnews or something.

They will 'fix' the system to prohibit two cupcake small conference teams from getting in ever again. Nobody wants to watch not one but TWO worthless and boring games in the first round.

If it expands any further, the extra teams should all be extra at-large teams. Five conference champions is more than enough.

Makes for even more unwatchable football. Rather than just 2 lopsided games there would be 5.

When will people realize conference champions =/= best teams? Here's the playoff you just created (keeping the 6 highest non-conference champs from the current bracket):

Conference champs
Indiana
UGA
Tech
Duke
Tulane
JMU
Boise State
Kennesaw State
Western Michigan

At-large bids
Ohio State
Oregon
Ole Miss
Texas A&M
OU
Bama

One of the big things they got wrong was their screwing the SEC and gifting the B1G with the bracket.
All the B1G teams can make the semis if they win.
But since they paired up and bunched up the five SEC teams, the best the SEC can do is have two teams in the semis.

They gifted Alabama a spot, so it all balances out.

The most epic turn of events would be: JMU wins and Tulane or 1 ocf the two finds a victory. Then what? I'm actually enjoying the implosion! Go to 16 teams, leave the CCG, go to computers ranking and eliminate the human (bias) element. I'm just excited to see my two teams in the playoffs. Oh, BTW, it feels good to not give a damn about losing to sip. We have bigger fish to catch and cook! LFG!

While that is a legitimate solution, I think you'd have to increase it past 16 teams. Having approximately 1/3 of the field made up of G5 in a 16 team playoff looks terribly weak.

The autobids were done to avoid litigation. That is the only reason they exist.
