Texas A&M is a special place. Most buy into the Aggie family, the network and the culture.

We want our coach to be part of the family, we want our quarterback to be a part of the family, we sell our family, network and culture to potential athletes when recruiting them.

It is for the same reason that we don't treat our sports like a business like other schools do. We hold on longer to coaches and players with less than elite productivity, and we do it because we want to be a family and not a business.

In football, especially, mediocrity will always exist due to this. A great example is Marcel Reed right now. He's good with flashes, but he's not gonna be elite game in game out, but we wouldn't dare go get a portal guy that was elite, even if there was one.

It's just how we are. I love it for our culture but hate it for our sports, especially football.

Speak for yourself.

I could give a rats ass if Elko and Reed are "family". It's been 86 years…. just win.

OP is correct. I've been posting about this for many years. The culture of family and loyalty at A&M, while it makes Aggies feel good, impedes us from doing the uncomfortable things that are necessary to win a championship. The two can't coexist.

the dismissive feeling on marcell reed is a mistake. he is good enough for us to win big if the right pieces are in place. it is very clear that having a strong running game makes reed a strong qb however his play trails off when he is asked to do to much/ lack of running game. this is somewhat evident over the last two seasons once moss went down. this is especially true against elite competition. invest in the run game and i think you will see reeds play revert back to what he was before the last few games of the season. which is as pretty damn good.

Nice read, however, you haven't enough knowledge of A&M football history to assess this accurately. For 70 years I have witnessed A&M football. I've seen coaches come and go. Of all the coaches in all these years only two had the potential to recruit and win consistently. These two were Bear Bryant and Jackie Sherill. There were others who couldn't win a game and others who could win, but couldn't quite reach the pinnacle, such as this 2025 team, When A&M can hire the right coach, things will be different. So far, the hiring record is very lacking.

I want our Aggie family coaches and players to win titles . Who doesn't want their family to win titles ? I am 100% sure Elko does . He wants it for himself , his staff, his players , and for the broader Aggie family.

What is it that OP is suggesting ? that we won't ever win it all and just accept it or change the culture or is it something else? The. Culture has definitely evolved over time and we have pretty much tried
everything wrt football program leadership. This last cycle of hfc hiring we heard every name out there as a possibility. Personally I think we landed with the best choice we could have and there has been marked improvement season over season with only 2 seasons to judge by.

I agree with what you're saying. You'll never see Ohio St. or Oregon or any of the other perennial playoff teams enter a season with an inconsistent QB like Reed, they are always looking to upgrade.

But it feels like next season will be a rebuilding year so does it make sense to buy a one year mercenary when you're rebuilding both lines and with so much coaching turnover? It might just be better to spend the money elsewhere and then reevaluate QB in 2027.

I don't really buy in to this "family" stuff for coaches anymore. If someone's agent essentially extorts you for 9-10 million per year, or else they're walking, then it's just hard to think of them as family. Same for players in this age of NIL and annual free agency.

This is more of a business now than it ever was.

TAMU's valuation in 2025 was $1.32B and third in the country. The only 'families' that run a better business are Sicilian.

Dude. A&M is one of the most valuable sports programs in the country. This year alone it trails only Texas and Ohio State.

It's a business. They treat it like a business. But also expect you to be an "good Aggie" about it all.

As we move into the new era of cynical college sports, I would suggest keeping Aggie culture and your experience on one hand, and sports on the other. The two are not related.

As I've said numerous times in this forum, we will continue our march of mediocrity (now at 86 years, and still going) until we hire a professional college football search firm to find us the best HC, OC, and DC with the highest probability of winning a Natty. And by "best", I mean one with experience at the SEC and Natty level, and with a proven record of winning over a significant period of time (at least 4 years).

That's how Michigan got Jim Harbaugh, through a professional search firm, and he won them a Natty.

The ONLY valid ANNUAL goal for ALL Aggie Sports is a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Harbaugh is Michigan alum. Attributing his hire there to a result of a professional search firm is about as dense as it gets.

Furthermore, there have been far more hires made utilizing these search firms that have crashed and burned than have been successful.

People thinking we can just snap and upgrade Marcel. It's laughable.

I have little doubts Elko has entertained the idea, but you can't blow 60-70% of your portal budget to MAYBE or maybe not even upgrade the QB position and leave yourself with a lesser roster elsewhere making that obsolete anyways. Unless we get someone for the same or less than Marcel who is better, Marcel will be our guy next year. He won't be our guy every year.

As for the premise. Way to take a stand. 99% of coaches out there will never win it all. Out of 136 current FBS schools, I'm guessing 125-128 of them don't win one in our lifetime. Way to take a stand. Most coaches are fired before winning it all. But over the next 10-15 years? Other than the usual suspects like Georgia/Ohio State/bama, I think we have as much of a chance as anyone to break through in that next tier., Only time will tell.

But again, the OP is very brave for taking the percentage play.

Elko is not family he's hired help. A lot of the athletes are now there too. They don't commit to the school and will never get a degree. They commit to the highest bidder. It is for this reason that we should consider football to be transactional and fire coaches and players that don't perform.

Agree to disagree. It is big business now, especially at Texas A&M. You can have both as Mack Brown proved.

QBs? We've gone through Haynes King, Zack Calzada, Max Johnson, Jaylen Henderson, Weigman, and Marcel in just 5 years.

I do not view Reed as family. His action in the past week confirmed that. I also think we made a huge mistake extending Elko before he won anything.

We are a business. Just a poorly run one.

After watching Curt Cignetti's team the past two years and our Volleyball national championship then reflecting on how Florida was nothing prior to the Ol' Ball Coach, how we were statistically comparable to LSU until the GOAT won them a national championship elevating them to elite status, Oregon being a team with a cartoon logo until the arrival of Chip Kelly and consistent ten win seasons, I am convinced it takes the right person at the helm

And if we looked good against Texas and Miami, not necessarily winning but just playing well, I would think Elko was it.

However, based on those two games it's hard not to think he will end up much like all the others.

Our program is too volatile to allow a solid base of consistency to take root. If the 4-5 year coach cycle continues then don't expect any hardware.

Oh brother. Alabama won a truck load of championships with a bunch of mediocre at best QBs.

Every program struggles to find a good QB because it is, by far, the hardest position to project and evaluate.

Saban Alabama and post NIL Bama are different though. Saban could stack 3-4 five stars deep pre NIL. Those teams had a talent composite that isn't achievable anymore. So yeah they would roll out a game manager and physically beat teams but those days are over. You need a good player at QB, at least a good game manager that won't make too many mistakes to win in today's game.
