Obviously he's spending money in EVERY sport, which is fine, but how/why is one guy outbidding us, tu on bigtime talent. I can understand passing on good not great players, but tech has consistently gotten the best players especially on the DL.

Because we aren't going to significantly over spend on players.

Tech has to give more than market value to sign them. It is a recipe for disaster if yiu are trying to build a program. Short term it works but eventually hos money will dry up one way or another.

He's not. Collectively both A&M and the sips have as much or more than Tech's booster. Ours just aren't vocal about it and make it about themselves.

And right now, the biggest winner in the portal is arguably Oklahoma State, a program most had written off. How each team approaches the portal is completely different. Some schools, like us, use it more to fill in spots you didn't address with high school recruiting and development. Some like Indiana use it as the sole source of talent.

We don't have that singular sugar daddy who has made it his mission to buy the best players across all sports. UH somewhat has that with Fertitta, but I think he's been more of a T Boone type putting money into infrastructure for the program rather than direct NIL payment.

We have many well to do donors who as a collective can put up good money, but in that instance we are operating as a business looking to pay market value for the right players, and even get some under the radar bargain players rather than the hottest name. Campbell has basically put it out there that if you are the best at your position, let him know the best offer and he'll beat it. Him, not the collective. When one person strokes that/those checks, you can have that level of autonomy to make those kind of offers. That's not what we have, to the best of my knowledge.

One problem with that other approach is that if you make it purely about money you tend to get a certain type of player. And you also begin to collect talent, rather than build a team. And that's a bad combo when you have poor coaching like Joey McGuire.

I feel like we tried this a few years ago with Jimbo's war chest when we signed the "best class in history." Pretty much blew up in our face. Seems like we need to find the right players, not the "best" players.

OSU is signing the North Texas team since they now have NT's coach.

Not sure those players are a huge win.

Why is no one talking about Mark Cuban and Indiana, you think they got great in two years because of their coach...

Eventually this burn rate will slow when these big payments do not have that big return, just because someone has a lot of money does not make them smart spenders.

Curt Cignetti would have you believe otherwise. He's the cockiest ******* I've ever seen.

Just wait until they sell him equity in their athletics program where he can skim profits

Indiana has a core group of talent that followed Cignetti from James Madison. It can absolutely be a huge win.

This is a desperate reach for a negative take on what tceh is doing.

This is exactly what you do to build a powerhouse. Buy elite players. And even if the money dries up- get to the playoffs enough times - which they will- and you don't have to overpay for players any more.

I love how the sugar daddy Cambell is throwing all this money at all these players, yet he goes on all the podcasts and on these boards about "saving" college sports. complete hypocrite.

There is no way to dismiss what has happened at Indiana as anything other than amazing coaches. None of his transfers were "OMG, how did Indiana land THIS guy" at the time.

Money or not, he's an awesome coach.

Bad take. Horribly bad. It's both coaching and transfer talent.

They aren't buying a roster full of elite players. Last year they had two. This year I don't see any.

He's taking players from all schools. Not just A&M. It's actually a good thing bc it helps even out the field in the SEC more.

Deion at Colorado and Norvell at FSU are prime examples of why you can't just rely on the portal to build your team every year. It's not sustainable and of the 2 FSU had one great season and haven't done anything since. You start to end up with a bunch of "me" type players and only there for money (like someone mentioned our "best class ever" that mostly transferred out) and it blows up in your face.

He is like T Boone Pickens. He has a strategy and frankly it works. We don't need his strategy, but don't make fun of it.

But they aren't "elite". Not even close. Sorsby had similar stats to Reed against worse competition.

Props to Cody Campbell for getting the jump on things. He made an immediate impact on Defense for Tech and it got them into the playoffs. However, I see the playing field leveled already with all the major players, us included. As mentioned, I see us being smart and methodical how we dole out the incentives. I like the current approach- build from within with HS talent, and supplement need areas through the portal.

it is not all Cody's money...he is helping coordinating it, but they have created an NIL collective call the Matador Club which has may large donors involved, like Dusty Womble who funded the majority of the $250M Womble football complex....

This is not just 1 guy throwing all his money away, i hope most people keep thinking that though so they continue to be surprised....

TxTech's two big donors, Cody Campbell and John Sellers, are basically the biggest donors and the driving force behind Tech's money. They've given the most and cajoled a few other wealthy individuals to donate.
Campbell likes the attention, Sellers stays in the background.
They have flipped a few companies over the years, always entities with good undrilled acreage positions. There latest and biggest by far was Double Eagle Energy with the deal described as follows:

".... sold to Midland's Diamondback Energy (NASDAQ: FANG) for $3 billion in cash and 6.9 million shares of Diamondback common stock.
Said to be worth $4.08 billion, the deal includes around 40,000 net acres in the core of the Midland Basin and an estimated run-rate production of around 27,000 barrels per day"

Yeah, it's just the NT coaches that could be the huge win.

Tech basketball nabbed one of those (McCasland) and made the Dance their first year and an Elite 8 run their 2nd.

Cambpell's carry on that deal was roughly 10%, around $400m. People for some reason think he was just handed $4B.
