Howdy, Ags, As an old Ag, my interest in Texas A&M football has largely coincided with the Super Bowl era. For instance, I was aware in the early days that Aggie legend Lee Roy Caffey played for the Green Bay Packer Super Bowl teams and I thoroughly enjoyed Von Miller's MVP performance for Denver in Super Bowl 50.

With Super Bowl 60 on Sunday, we're seeing articles like this one about Super Bowl MVPs from the state of Texas https://aggieswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/aggies/football/2026/02/03/texas-aggies-football-leads-all-texas-schools-in-super-bowl-mvps/88491528007/.

Anyone have particular Aggie-related memories or observations of past Super Bowls? As an example, I was surprised (based on Wikipedia) that Lee Roy Caffey (6' 3", 247 lbs) was essentially the same size as Von Miller (6' 3", 250 lbs). Wouldn't it be great to have them playing side-by-side on the Aggie defense next year? I'm pretty sure both can play linebacker!

(This seems like an obvious topic but I couldn't find a related thread using the search option (may have been doing something wrong as it didn't turn up much). Also, I realize this subject overlaps with the NFL forum but didn't see anything there. In any case, feel free to link prior TexAgs threads. They're always interesting to read).

I had intended to include a list of A&M players who have won Super Bowls in the first post but couldn't get the link to work. Here's an AI summary that looks to be accurate.

It's AI generated so there are no guarantees. Seems like it spits out different data each time you ask a question. But, in this case, the summary presumably reflects the father vs. the son. https://www.google.com/search?q=is.there.more.than.one.jeff.fuller.who.played+for.trxas.a%26m&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#lfId=ChxjMe

Yes, definitely Lester Hayes. One of my favorites. He's on the 2024 AggiesWire list of 15 Aggies who played on Super Bowl winning teams. That number still seems low to me. The link is active in the AI summary in my second post.

Inducted into Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. https://12thman.com/honors/texas-am-athletic-hall-of-fame/lester-hayes/100

Nice summary of his NFL career including two Super Bowl wins: Was drafted in the fifth round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders and enjoyed a stellar 10-year NFL career that included two Super Bowl Championships, five Pro Bowl selections and a spot on the All-1980s team. He was the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year and an NFL All-Pro in 1980 after leading the league with a then-modern day NFL record 13 interceptions.

EDIT: SEE BUBBLES POST BELOW FOR THE CORRECT COUNT. THANKS BUBBLES!

By my count, my A&I Javelinas have as many 3 times Super Bowl players as A&M.

Gene Upshaw and Darrell Green

Gary Kubiak and Ty Warren

ut only has one… Casey Hampton

Thanks for engaging - good stuff.

I'm mostly using a AggiesWire 2024 article as the "definitive source." The link is active in the AI summary in my second post and will try it again here:
https://aggieswire.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/aggies/football/2024/02/10/texas-am-football-every-aggie-who-has-won-the-super-bowl-super-bowl-lviii/77776064007/

Don't forget about Lee Roy Caffey who won a third SB with Dallas after the first two with Green Bay.

Also, Kevin Smith: Cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys who won three Super Bowls (XXVII, XXVIII, XXX).

This stuff gets a little convoluted when coaching is considered:

From AI: Gary Kubiak has won a total of four Super Bowls during his NFL career as a coach. He won three as an assistant coach/offensive coordinator (Super Bowl XXIX with the 49ers, and Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII with the Broncos) and one as the head coach of the Denver Broncos (Super Bowl 50).

As for Ty Warren. The AggieWires article and AI say he won 2 - Ty Warren, a former defensive end from Texas A&M, won two Super Bowls during his eight-season tenure with the New England Patriots. He secured championship rings in Super Bowl XXXVIII (2003 season) and Super Bowl XXXIX (2004 season).

Lester Hayes and Von Miller (so far) also won two.

Also checked on Upshaw and Green. A distinction is made on whether players were in or won Super Bowls. AI indicates they each played in three but only won two championships:

Both legendary Hall of Famers played in three Super Bowls during their respective careers, but both secured two Super Bowl championships.
Gene Upshaw (Oakland Raiders): Won two Super Bowls (XI, XV).
Darrell Green (Washington Redskins): Won two Super Bowls (XXII, XXVI).

Sorry, still wading through some of the Super Bowl championship figures. As mentioned in an earlier post, there's a bit of confusion on Jeff Fuller. He's not mentioned in the AggiesWire article. The key point is we're talking about the father vs. the son. Here is the AI summary on him:

Jeffery Avery Fuller, who played safety for the San Francisco 49ers from 1984 to 1989, was part of the organization during a dominant era, although he was primarily a backup and special teams contributor during his three Super Bowl championship seasons. He won his three Super Bowls in:
Super Bowl XIX (1984 season)
Super Bowl XXIII (1988 season)
Super Bowl XXIV (1989 season)

A distinction is made on individuals who have played in versus won Super Bowls. The best guess on winners is around 15 (see the AggiesWire article, which doesn't include the senior Jeff Fuller). I tried to get the total number of Aggies who have played in (not necessarily including winning) SBs and all I got was "dozens."

Thanks. Looks like you're at least as knowledgeable as AI which said: Former Texas A&M standout defensive back Chet Brooks won two Super Bowl championships with the San Francisco 49ers. He was a member of the 49ers teams that won Super Bowl XXIII (1989) and Super Bowl XXIV (1990). Brooks was an 11th-round draft pick in 1988 who quickly became a key contributor on the 49ers' defense, even starting in the 1989 season.

We're collecting quite a group (8?) of "multiple" Aggie Super Bowl winners:

Four: Kubiak - all coaching; checking further, he lost 3 SBs as Denver's backup QB (XXI, XXII, XXIV). Also, I initially couldn't find any other assistant coach who was a former A&M player and subsequently won a SB. However, you'll see below that Gene Stallings was later identified. How did we miss Gene?!?
Three: Caffey and Kevin Smith
Two: Brooks, Fuller (father), Hayes, Miller, and Warren
BubblesMcGee

AI on Thomas Sanders and SB championships: former Texas A&M running back Thomas Sanders played on a Super Bowl championship team. He was a member of the 1985 Chicago Bears, who won Super Bowl XX following the 1985 NFL season. Sanders was drafted by the Bears in the ninth round of the 1985 NFL draft.

Another one, in addition to Fuller and Brooks, not included in the 2024 AggiesWire article. It's hard to put together a comprehensive list. Looks like we're up to 18 Aggies with at least one Super Bowl win.

Extra credit for the Super Bowl Shuffle! I tried to check him out against the YouTube video below. Supposedly, Sanders was #20 with the Bears. Didn't see anyone with that number in the video but could have missed him or maybe he used a different number or just wasn't in this take.

Pretty cool in any case - I'd forgotten about the Super Bowl Shuffle. Neat to see Jim McMahon out front.

Mike Evans for the Bucs in SB LV. Only had 1 catch for 31 yards, but he was a big part of that team getting there.

Yes, thanks. Both of them are included in the AggiesWire article from 2024 (linked again below) and contribute to our total of 18. We still have a ways to go to reach Bama's 54! And, as best I can tell, no Ags are playing for either NE or Seattle tonight. Oh well - that will take away from my rooting interests in the game.

Updated multiple SB winners from the earlier post:

First, we are counting former A&M players who served as coaches on Super Bowl winning teams. And, you are correct in pointing out Gene Stallings should have been included. This shows the limitations of the Google machine and AI. I had asked whether any former players had coached winning SB teams and got nothing other than Gary Kubiak (who has four SB rings as a coach).

We're now up to 21 former Aggie players who have won Super Bowls either as a player or coach. Who else are we missing?

Watching the Super Bowl and find myself rooting for the Seahawks. As I mentioned in another post, I don't believe any A&M former players are playing or coaching for either team. I found one interesting tidbit. Klint Kubiak, son of Gary and the Seattle Offensive Coordinator, played HS football in CO and then at CSU. I did not know that Klint's first coaching job was at A&M (2010-12) and he has a master's degree from TAMU ('12). Am betting (hoping) he wears an Aggie ring!
