So basically, this world cup is probably going to shatter the record for penalties in the tournament. VAR is basically going to prove that the biggest problem with officiating soccer has not been teams unfairly earning penalties and diving and all that, but the fact that refs have been failing to call penalties when they are deserved.

I guess it pretty much makes sense given that the most controversial moment in US history is a penalty shout (Frings handball) I wonder how many other teams have similar history.

i know it's random, but given their history, I want to accuse them of tampering. Such an easy group, and it just so happens to be when the are hosting. They've never even made it out of Group Stage before.

Being in Pot 1 is a huge advantage over being in 3 or 4. You miss all the best teams in 1 and only get one Good European or SA team in 2 and get 2 bad teams from 3/4

Not really true. As the old USSR they finished 4th in the 1966 World Cup. Reached quarterfinals/2nd round more than once. Now do I think FIFA might have frozen some balls for the draw? Absolutely. They did not want to see a repeat of 2010 with the hosts going out in the group stage. That said Russia has played well in front of a galvanized home crowd and will advance to the knockout stage.

No real place to put this so it lands here. Saw a Nigeria kit comment in the game thread (and those are fantastic) and was reminded that I ran across this beautiful Greece kit on the Nike site last night. (I'm both disappointed we didn't get to see in the tournament yet glad we aren't seeing it because Greece plays boring soccer.)

Thats kinda close to my dream of a USA jersey thats like the bomb pop jersey with a blue upper portion and then red and white hoops all the way down (ass opposed to the bomb pop's one white hoop with solid red below)

This is a very solid idea. Hoops R US. I sadly don't own a Waldo (that was back when I was too cheap to buy soccer jerseys). My Gold Cup jersey might be my most cherished physical possession. I appreciate that they kept hoops in the kits for this year but I don't really love the jerseys despite that.

That Greece kit is hot fire.

Lalas drives me crazy at times but overall I think they have done a great Job on coverage and more often than not have been fine with the play by play guys. I did see one match where they had I believe a Mexican color analyst and my only real complaint was it was at times hard to understand but didn't impact my game watching experience.
