Dunn justified her inclusion with that incredible chase down / tackle combo in the second half. Brilliant work.
Was that Dunn that got beat on the end line, but then quickly chased her down for the take away? If so, speed and quickness kills for sure.

Mad props for their ability to stand tall late when it was clear they were gassed in what was essentially a highly supported road game.
Probably the highest quality women's match I have seen. Just a great great game.

Now don't piss it away by losing to England.

No kidding. England is no slouch.

I was against Rapinoe starting today, and I still don't think she was great in the run of play, but there is A LOT to be said for having a cold-blooded killer finisher on the field. She had two chances and she calmly and clinically put both in the back of the net.

Kudos to Rapinoe and kudos to Ellis. The French starting 11 are arguably as good or better than the US, but USA managed to get the win.

Freaking awesome.

Her passing has room for improvement. But her hustle and tacking were excellent.

Rappineo in the line-up tells me all I need to know. Ellis is going to ride her out of a job. My guess if she plays the entire game like last game, the US loses.

Wish I could enjoy a victory, but their politics has ruined it.
This post didn't age well.

Yep. England have looked like the team in best form so far.

I stand by what i said. She played poorly the last game. What she did this game doesn't change that how she played the last game. Any other players get benched. Morgan prob should have been benched as well.

There are different rules for stars. This is true for every team in every sport. Paid off today.

4 goals over the last 2 matches for her.

2 PKs that anyone could have made. A lucky goal that went through 10 legs, poorly placed. And the last one that landed right in her lap? I give her the last one, that was a veteran shot...could have sailed that easily.

If that was Landon Donovan in the WC we'd say he stepped up as the US' all time greatest goal scorer

If you're going to talk mad s*** before the tournament's biggest match and draw extra attention to yourself you'd better back it up. Rapinoe knows what she's doing.

Now you're just making a fool out of yourself.

Find me another player who would've made all 4 of those shots if put into the exact same situation.

Where to begin... Ok.

1. As someone who missed a pk, subsequently lost a city championship game, lost a month's worth of sleep, and refused to take another pk for about 20 years, please tell me you've actually taken a pk in a game. There are few things in sports that carry that kind of pressure.

2. Rapinoe's free kick goal today was a thing of beauty. PERFECTLY placed. The outcome is precisely what happens when that kick is played so perfectly.

3. Glad you give her credit for the second goal. I have seen countless chances like that wasted in this wwc. As soon as that ball meandered toward an open Rapinoe, I knew it was a goal. Maybe Lloyd is the only other player you'd want more to be in that situation.

Nah. There's been plenty of times on this board where there was no "pro-Rapinoe" consensus, by any stretch. This isn't group think.

You have a deep dislike of her and you're vocal about it--that's your prerogative, but don't confuse that with anything else.

I invite you to learn to think for yourself, such a dumb statement. Your inability to objectively look at her play the last game despite the two 2PKs shows your lack off soccer knowledge.

1. "tell me you've actually taken a pk in a game. " Wrong. And not only that. if you read what I said you would see i said i am glad she took the 2nd PK, and not Morgan. She buried it w/o getting cute, very mature.

2. I said that, but to say that no one else on the team could have done the same, at this level, is disingenuous at best.

3. Agree, but again, there are others that could have made that shot as well. At this level, several of them can.

Disclosure: I don't know soccer but enjoy watching World Cup. Rapinoe is a badass. Her passes are amazing/imaginative. Goal scoring knack. Clearly best player on the field. But, what the hell do I know.

Are we still *****ing and moaning about this?

Jeez.

Two goals from the spot notwithstanding, the general consensus around here seemed to be that she did not play well against Spain. When posters suggested lineups, her name was frequently omitted. When OlSarge92 said that it's a problem if she plays today like she did before, they were correct.

Fortunately for everyone, except for OlSarge and me (for having to read this thread), she apparently played well.

Holy crap. Get a grip. EVERY player on the team CAN do what she did today. She DID IT. I would say that Lavelle has been one of USA's best players... Until today. Did you see what the nerves of playing in such a huge game did to her today? She was half the player she's been.

Rapinoe is an assassin. I've been calling for her to be replaced since the Sweden game. I don't like her politics. I think she's lost a step. But today I am here to say I WAS WRONG. Rapinoe was the difference today because she just don't give a ****. And when the chance came her way at 1-0, she wasn't thinking about choking, she wasn't nervous, she just pulled the trigger like the cold-blooded assassin she is.

And if you can't see that, I don't know what else to say.

Almost every Rose Lavelle possession goes the same:

Great turn, great speed and electricity in space, makes a player miss, then misses the final pass.

Until she can learn to make the final pass against quality teams, she does little to help other than to make things look exciting for a few seconds at a time. But if she ever learns it, she will be the best player on the field.

You actually don't know ***** I never said she was playing well, I said why she was in the lineup. A lot of us would have replaced her, the problem is how you said it and what your reasoning was.

Ha, give it a rest dude. You want to attack someone as you are, then be ready to take it in return. Both statements are dumb.

We are going to need two game threads on Tuesday. The micro analysis and negativity directed toward our players is just tiring and takes the fun out of, oh I don't know, our national team winning a World Cup quarterfinal against a really strong opponent on their home soil.

And before anyone says if I don't like it, then read something else or go away or whatever, I actually enjoy the decent discourse around a game like today. It just sucks that 90% of this thread is 1) saying how the players aren't that good, 2) posturing about who knows more about soccer, 3) general screaming negativity into an internet black hole.

Rant over. I'm proud of our team and what they are doing and look forward to watching them keep going. Beat England.

This team reminds me of the great Italian men's teams of the past: Strength in the back, defensive/counterattacking posture, old controversial talent, crafty players that draw fouls, great on set pieces, good at theatrical elements...

Fun to watch. It sucks that some of yall didn't share my experience. I though that was an awesome performance by our National Team!
