Time for some youth for the Olympics next year-

Long, Krieger, Rapinoe, Saurbaun, Lloyd need to move out of the way for Davidson, Pugh Horan and younger players

I would have given the golden ball to Lavelle or Heath. I think it's bizarre to give it to Rapinoe, just my opinion. She was pretty much always slower than the RB she faced.

Agree. I think Lavelle was our best player, but don't think it was a clear cut thing. On the men's side it seems like someone usually elevates themself as a cut above. Didn't see that in this tournament.

Lavelle was the most dangerous player on the field the last two games. I'm fine with Rapinoe getting golden boot, but golden ball should have gone to Lavelle. Morgan probably should have gotten bronze - her hold up play and foul-drawing was fantastic and gave room to the rest of the US attack.

You're right. I guess when the team that beat your team goes on to win it all, the loss feels a little better.

You tried to razz me. I'm damn sure gonna razz you for cheering against the US mother****ing A.

We're the champions of the world!!!

In your head I see. And mookie is dead on right.

No assists too

She gets it bc she played less

Which is hilarious bc she was the worst player we put out there every game

Uh oh, you are going against the liberal narrative, that's not allowed here

No I am going there bc she was our worst player
And fat Ronaldoed her way to the golden boot

What does this even mean?
when Brazil won in 2002 Fat Ronaldo poached a ton of goals, he was fat out of shape and his teamates did all the work

just like rapinoe

Dude scored the most goals in a World Cup in the last 50 years, all of which came in the run of play. And being in the right place at the right time is a really big part of being a striker.
so you are saying she poached the goals ever worse than fat ronaldo?

Just heard an analyst compare Lavelle to Hazard. I think it's a good comparison. Smart player, great vision, just makes stuff happen.

The team will likely make very few changes for the Tokyo roster. It's after that tourney that the new blood will be incorporated.

A year is a long time. The question is will Ellis still be coaching the national team for the Olympics?

A women's version of the young Americans thread might be nice. I'd like to know more about the age distribution for the rest of the world as well.

I was really impressed with Miedema's ball skills. The whole Dutch team is very young compared to the US. Only 2 in their 30s on the whole roster.

The Germans have a couple of teenagers on their roster.

I only watch soccer during major matchups and major tournaments. Dunn jumped out to me in every single game. She was the one person I constantly noticed because of her play. She destroyed her opponents. Looked like the best player on the field when she was challenged.

Is there reason to believe Ellis won't continue?

The 23 player roster actually has to be cut down to 18 for the Olympics. So, more players will be chopped than added (if any).

After the 2015 WWC, four players retired and two got pregnant so that made the changes easy for Ellis heading into Rio.

Mallory Pugh is another excellent youngster who couldn't get on the field enough because of the logjam of great players we have. She should be a reliable starter in four years.

The fact is that the USWNT seems to be rotating players perfectly to always have a mix of young, prime, and senior players in the squad. If we keep that going, we can keep winning, even as the rest of the world is upping their game.

Pretty sick how we took on all comers this tournament despite going out early in the Olympics and not showing well in She Believes. I'm sure we were trying in the Olympics, but I wonder if Ellis was using the other competitions to experiment with various players, positions, and line-ups. Dunn didn't used to play defense, for example.

Ellis takes a lot of ****, but she also just took two World Cups in a row. As the saying goes, success speaks for itself.

I might be in the minority on Dunn but I thought she played well but didn't defend all that great if that makes sense. I noticed her on defense because she seemed to be out of position and had to hustle back to defend someone she left open (which she did extremely wellgreat recoveries for the most part). I remember several VERY risky sliding tackles as last ditch efforts when she was playing catch up.

Thought she would've been a much better wing than left back.

A few names we'll almost certainly be seeing in the next few years: Ashley Sanchez, Catarina Macario, Sophia Smith, Naomi Girma, and probably another handful of Stanford players

Regarding the Nike ad and my comments...

The women deserve the credit for winning the WC; however, keep politics out of it. The political commentary in that ad, in my opinion, was not necessary and redundant. After all, this was the "Women's World Cup" correct.

As to the comment about daughters, I have one (and two boys). After spending time on rec teams, select teams, and a high school team she played in college and was all conference twice. Currently, she is married, lives in Denver and has a great position with her company. I never discouraged her from doing anything and because of that, she is where she is today.

I just thought the commercial was poorly written, but the message is about as timely as it can be. Just won the world cup. Thought it sounded like a fake SNL commercial with how long she ran on for.

Well, sounds like some of you younger gents have some work to do, if you want to increase the turnover.

Great game by the ladies. They were WAY too strong for the Dutch. Put it this way - Horan would arguably be the best player on any other team, and she didn't start for the US.

Good for Rapinoe, though she was not even close to the best player in the tourney. I love soccer, but I've always hated the amount of weight pk's carry. In a game where goals are so hard to score, a seemingly meaningless foul can give a team a ok and decide the game. Rapinoe benefited by being the best pk taker on the best team, and by Morgan drawing fouls in the box.

Rose Lavelle is my choice for the best player in the tourney - constantly winning balls in midfield and on defense, making great passes, and constantly being dangerous on attack. I'm so glad she got rewarded with the goal in the final. She is a blast to watch, along with Mewis, and that combination will be hard to beat for the next few years.

So I agree in general about PKs carrying too much weight, but the ones in this tournament were earned by the US. It's freaking hard to score in soccer, and damn near impossible if the other team gets to physically abuse you in the box.

The US got those penalties because the other teams had to foul us like hell all the time to keep us from scoring.
Agnzona
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think you could improve it either two ways. One make it easier for the keeper or be able to award penalties like a yellow or red card but don't result in a PK. Inadvertent hand balls that don't help or a foul after the offensive player already shot the ball or if they never had a chance at. In otherwards it had to really prevent a goal if not award a card and a corner. I bet a high % plays that resulted in a PK wouldn't have been a goal anyway if no foul had occurred because it's hard to score. That would also allow calling it a bit tighter in the box. In many big games you see the refs swallow the whistle in the box because it's disproportionately punitive.

I don't have a problem with it.

How are we supposed to score when other teams barely put any of their players forward and are way too physical?

Penalties and free kicks are the only way to punish those teams.
