At some point you would think the league would step in. And you have to wonder why anyone would agree to terms with them.

Once again another lever is activated and money is about half of what Laporta promised. This is brutal to watch.

They are literally selling off their future revenue hoping to generate cash for this year. That's not a viable long term strategy. It's a house of cards.

How long will La Liga let this go on? They must have a money printer down stairs at Camp Nou.

It's behind the Athletic firewall but if you have access make sure you read their breakdown of the giant pile of **** Barca has made for itself.

Maybe two articles worth reading? I don't have a sub either but they approached uefa about using future champions league income as collateral?

They reference that in my article and uefa was apparently like GFTO. First off, you aren't guaranteed those future CL monies. And Barca seemed surprised that uefa would even have a problem with the request.

UEFA explained to the Barcelona executive that they could not use several years' worth of future Champions League television money as there was no guarantee that they would qualify for the tournament in every season. This is due to the fact that Champions League qualification is secured through sporting merit, rather than reputation and legacy.

The Barcelona official was understood to be genuinely surprised by the rejection.

but, but, but.. we're Barcelona

I'm really shocked they haven't come together and filed a lawsuit against the club.

Yeah I've wondered that too and come to the conclusion that Barca must have something in writing that would make their case not stand. Maybe emails/texts during Covid when players would clearly have a spirit of "I'll agree to whatever - I just want to play again."

So if their legal case isn't strong, their only recourse is to hold Barca hostage and prevent them from registering players. The club can line up transfer deals all day long, but at the end of the day, if the player doesn't agree then it ain't gonna happen.

Beautiful. So as it stands, those players would only be eligible for cup matches and CL games

Lest everyone forget that Barcelona used a loophole to get Braithwaite in the first place from Leganes who was fighting to stave off relegation and in turn were not allowed to sign a replacement.

I have to think that if Barca were in England they would be subject to massive points deductions for financial ****housery.

This is why they need Super League (and I bet anything Real Madrid is in a rough position too). When they said Super League is needed because soccer clubs would collapse without it, it's because Barca and Real spent like crazy without any repercussions for so long. They think they are soccer and if they're in trouble then everyone else must be in trouble too.

Hate the lot of 'em.

Real is not in near as bad shape but you do have a valid point. The crazy part is that Barca are still buying. They are negotiating to get Alonso from Chelsea later this week.

The real crazy part is that players are still willing to sign on with a club that cannot register them. That's just mind boggling.

RM isn't as bad. Brought in alaba and rudiger on the free. Have bale, isco, Marcelo rolling off in salary. Remember we sold Ronaldo for $100MM to Juve. We make a lot of cash on sales of younger players. Getting fees on sales of guys that pass through as well. We can splash for one or two in the market a year.

Edit: barca just now switched to that model but out of necessity.

Edit 2: forgot selling varane and letting Ramos go. Those were big salaries too. We have a lot of young talent right now that isn't high salary like those guys. Wingers and mids.

As mentioned Real started reigning in the spend prior to covid much to the chagrin of many Madridistas. It's still high but very manageable.

Especially with the money they owe guys like de Jong for deferring their salary. That's why they are trying to sell him so badly. They don't wanna have to pay his deferred salary.

Lol at lumping RM with Barca. Madrid's books are pristine compared to many clubs, especially the Catalonians. Regularly winning the CL will do that.

Edit: And five people starred that post. Good stuff!

Go another step. How can you trust the agents? They know the situation too. I mean we know where Deco's loyalty lies when he takes no cut from raphinha but he's getting paid somewhere for it. The rest I'm really curious about. Barca supposedly promised lewa he'd be registered first but what other guarantees are floating out there? What did they promise kounde to tempt him from Chelsea with a new owner and stable paychecks?

Real is not near as in a bad of shape as Barcelona but they are not in good shape either. They had to sell a 30% stake in it's $1billion renovation of Bernabeu, giving up it's stadium revenues (minus tickets), in order to have money and go ahead from the league to spend this transfer window. And it only did that by recognizing that revenue this year even though the renovation won't be complete until 2023/24. The debt they're carrying is 4th in the world behind Chelsea, Tottenham, and Barcelona.

As much as I don't like Perez, he at least saw it coming and stopped spending in 2019.

my youngest son (FTAC '24) did his part to help Barca by attending the match against Pumas yesterday at Camp Nou. he was about 10 rows up from the corner where Lewandowski celebrated his 3rd minute goal.
