Grant wahl wore a rainbow shirt to a match a few weeks ago, received hundreds of death threats, and today "collapsed" at the argentina match before dying en route to the hospital via UBER!!!! This is terrifying honestly, and exactly why i never in a million years wouldve gone to qatar

Wasn't a fan of Grant. This is really tragic though.

Tragic if foul play is to blame, but one thing comes to mind - FAFO.

Naive to think the rainbow stuff would fly anywhere in the Middle East. But hey, holding a Palestinian flag on the pitch is totes cool:

Been reading his stuff for years. Always enjoyed his podcasts as well.

He had written some pretty critical stuff about the going's on in Qatar.

Wow, tragic. Didn't agree with his political views but enjoyed his writings and podcast (sans the political commentary)

I guess this thread got ported over here from somewhere else.

But yeah, his brother and other family members and now NPR are all confirming he collapsed during the second game today and died in route to the hospital.

This is insane. I am assuming this was a heart attack. Foul play seems a bit far fetched.

Wow. Sad to hear.

We throw around the word "brave" way too much in today's culture, but wearing a rainbow flag in Qatar was certainly very brave. Idiotic, but brave.

Yea he mentioned bronchitis and that something was going around the press pool.

He talked about having bronchitis on his last podcast but was feeling better.

He wrote a pretty scathing piece about Qatar a day or so ago and had hammered the human rights aspects of the World Cup pretty hard.

I think a lot of folks thought of him as just a soccer reporter, but he covered every sport under the sun for SI for a good long while. Wrote the first big piece about LeBron James back when he was still in HS.

Just a huge voice in sports journalism for multiple decades. And to have him die days after confrontations with Qatari security forces and the day after another big writeup about the human rights abuses... extremely suspicious.

Apparently he'd sought medical attention in the past couple of days for what he thought was bronchitis.

I'll say this from the medical side, I've seen completely healthy people go down from a heart attack. Its definitely not out of the question

His last daily article… has to be foul play. I don't think people just drop dead of bronchitis.

They just don't care. Qatari World Cup organizers don't even hide their apathy over migrant worker deaths, including the most recent one.

If his bronchitis was bad he wouldn't have been at the game feeling that badly likely, and that generally isn't a near instant killer like that anyway.
Heart attack is possible. Problem is that there is zero percent chance we get the truth from Qatar if it's something that puts them in a bad light.
And it isn't an overstatement to say that this is a massive loss for US soccer, easily the best most connected and knowledgeable best reporter for the team.

He was at the Netherlands-Argentina game right? If he was actually sick why was he there?

From his article on Monday…

Quote:

My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you. What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn't have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I'm already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.
Will be interesting to see what an autopsy shows.

Read a report that they took him to the hospital in an Uber? That seems completely insane.

Sad story.

He was felling terrible and having chest pain, and they gave him some strong cough syrup and sent him on his way. It certainly seems like he didn't get good health care.

His wife is a pretty prominent Dr. You'd think that he would have been sharing his symptoms with her and that his vitals had been taken by the doctor ?

He has looked pretty skinny recently.
If we have a Qatari foul play conspiracy can we also have an offsetting (?) covid vax conspiracy?

RIP Grant

Not there, especially at a stadium. Ubers (Karwa) everywhere. Locals and ubers were about the only ones on the road.

I won't be surprised at all if he was murdered. You can't go over there and stir up a bunch of crap. It isn't America. You have to be smarter than that. Having the World Cup in Qatar was a kick ass idea.

That's sad to hear. Crazy as I finished the FIFA Uncovered doc on Netflix this week talking about the corruption of FIFA. The doc also talks about having the World Cup in Qatar and the negatives behind it.

That game was playing well after midnight local time. How many taxis are available at that time of night in Doha? Not like there's a lot of drunks needing a ride home

Edit: sorry meant response to Deangelo
