U.S. media seated near him said Wahl fell back in his seat in the media tribune at Lusail Iconic Stadium during extra time and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance. Emergency services workers responded very quickly, the reporters said, and the reporters later were told that Wahl had died.

Just hope the truth comes out. Doubtful it will.

Just tragic. That young and seemed to be healthy.

Sad story.

He was felling terrible and having chest pain, and they gave him some strong cough syrup and sent him on his way. It certainly seems like he didn't get good health care.

Antibiotics too.

It sounds like he might have had a cold, but that chest pain could have been heart related rather than lung

Boy this story has potential to be weird. Wouldn't be the first time an American journalist was killed in the middle east right? I hope that's not the case.

I would think that the chances of a 49 year old dude, that is thin, having a heart attack aren't high.

"Thin" doesn't mean you're healthy or make you invincible. Life is precious, enjoy every day.

Yeah, but Foley was decapitated after being abducted by the world's most prolific terrorist organization.

I get that but the chances still aren't high. Not impossible, but not high.

Some time delayed poisoning or whatever also not likely. I don't know, I'm cautious about taking a comment from what is understandably a very emotional and upset brother and running with that idea too much. Obviously hope they get Grant back home and do all they can do to sort out what happened

I mean it did sound like he was working himself tp death... I'm not gonna dismiss foul play, but if you're not getting sleep, you're ill and stressed. Throw in a dramatic game... The odds can go way up.

That's sad to hear. Crazy as I finished the FIFA Uncovered doc on Netflix this week talking about the corruption of FIFA. The doc also talks about having the World Cup in Qatar and the negatives behind it.

My son called it the FIFA World Cup. I asked if we're gonna start calling it the IOC Olympic Games. Seriously, whoever started the world cup thread picked a shill-y title.

Run by a former KGB agent turned oligarch, Viktor Gushan, who named it after the heroes of the movie Westerns he favors, Sheriff is more than a soccer team. It's a business entity that owns everything that matters in Transnistria: the grocery stores, the gas stations, a casino, a TV channel, a telephone company, a winery, a reportedly vast smuggling network and Transnistria's most opulent structures, a $200 million soccer stadium and 14-field training facility complex.

That's really sad news.

I didn't always agree with him. I didn't even like all of his material. But it was awesome having a guy who only wrote about American soccer. I read everything he wrote as soon as I could.

I don't believe Qatar had anything to do with it.

We will likely never know wtf happened to him, but I'll take the small leap that it was foul play. When people say they "doubt" it was Qatar, do you mean doubt it was the government? Maybe it wasn't, but if you think about it, with him running his mouth over there for 2 weeks straight all it would really take is one rich guy (there are a few other there) to pay someone to clap him by putting something in food/drink. Willing to bet he had minimal security and was eating and drinking from places where it easily could have been tampered with.

I didn't always agree with Mr. Wahl's politics, but he was a proper journalist. And a good one. If you haven't read his article on Sheriff go read it. He was a tremendous voice for American soccer and he shall be missed.

Wow. Sad to hear.

We throw around the word "brave" way too much in today's culture, but wearing a rainbow flag in Qatar was certainly very brave. Idiotic, but brave.
why do Americans think when they travel to foreign countries that the beliefs and laws of those countries don't apply to them.

When in the USA you are under the protection of OUR constitution. When in Russia/ Qatar/ etc you are under the laws of that country

I won't be surprised at all if he was murdered. You can't go over there and stir up a bunch of crap. It isn't America. You have to be smarter than that. Having the World Cup in Qatar was a kick ass idea.

Underrated post.

Don't want to get in front of my skies on the foul play theory, but if that theory is substantiated, maybe the SJWs and lib tards will realize the world isn't all snowflakes and rainbows.

That being said, I hope it was natural causes for multiple reasons. Primarily to give his family peace of mind/closure, but to also avoid a geopolitical nightmare.

I usually assume incompetence over maliciousness. My guess is that he didn't die of foul play, just poor medical practices. He might have ended up with blood clots caused by stress, illness and long plane flights that could have presented as bronchitis. Had he been in the US, he might have been given bed rest and blood thinners. A crappy Qatari doctor could have misdiagnosed him and gave him cough medicine instead. Untreated blood clots would eventually cause a heart attack.

You might be surprised how often PEs are missed or misdiagnosed in the US. Not always an easy Dx

I also read they didn't have a defibrillator with them

Quote:

Why wasn't there a defibrillator? That was the question we kept asking each other, as the medics pumped and pumped to no avail. At this billion dollar state-of-the-art stadium, which has a VIP suite so lavish it includes a bedroom, which will host the World Cup final, why was there no defibrillator to hand? Many minutes passed and we kept expecting it to come. But it never did
How in this day and age do you not have at least an AED. We had them as medics all around Kyle Field 15 years ago. Pure incompetence by Qatar

Of course he knew what the laws there were and what would happen, that was the point of the protest, which is what it was. It wasn't much different than protests here during the civil rights era, passively provoke a response to an unjust law and force the spotlight on it.
And it served its purpose, it brought worldwide attention to the cause he was promoting largely on behalf of his brother who is gay.
If Qatar didn't want that scrutiny and to have to answer those questions they shouldn't have bribed their way to a world cup.

Not certain the Qataris care what a bunch of North Americans and Europeans think. The Iranian press questioned Adams about American hypocrisy with how we treat our minority citizens.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The whole point of them trying to get the World Cup was to legitimize themselves on the world stage, and increase tourism/economic investment there.
So they absolutely care when those goals are impeded.

Are they impeded?
The bribes seem to be working pretty well. Heck Saudi is buying the worlds best golfers. What's stopping Qatar from buying a soccer league thats as good as the second tier Euro leagues?

Mbappe was bribed to stay at PSG. Money talks
