I like Cowell to come in for the final 25-30 minutes of a game and just run and be a tank. I think that's a good role for him in this tournament and going forward with the senior squad.

When he adds some touch and technical ability, he will be a great player off the bench. Remember he will only be 23 at the next World Cup.

Maybe its recency bias but I like Cowell over Morris and Sargent

I don't see Sargent ever playing for the national team again in an important game. He has been passed up by Balogun and Pepi for sure, then the coaches probably like Ferreira a little more.

He would need to make a massive improvement, which I suppose is possible from a 23 year old, but the guys around him are all really young too.

Wouldn't count Sargent out as he finally gets a chance to play as a true #9 at Norwich. Don't forget the only reason Fereirra started the match against the Dutch was because of Sargent's ankle injury in the Iran match which forced him to miss against the Dutch. Sargent played pretty well at the WC.

Sargent isn't in consideration for playing out wide for the USMNT. I definitely like Cowell over Morris, Arriola, Zendejas and the other wingers at the Gold Cup.

I think Cowell DOES have technical ability, and is definitely most comfortable running at defenders with pace/power.
I think for him to take his next step in development, it's more the mental part of the game. Reading the field, making the right decision quickly, and either hitting that pass/taking the shot/or dribbling by the defender.

Right now his options are "try to dribble through anyone in front of him" as options 1 2 and 3, but he has definitely shown he is capable of hitting the pass/cross at a pretty high level of quality.
I feel like that is pretty common for players who are generally more athletically gifted than everyone else as they progress through the youth ranks. They eventually reach the level where that is not enough, and have to adjust. He is there now, at age 19. Pretty impressive. He may never take the next step, but hes a pretty good bench option as is (though I dont think he would currently make the full MNT roster)

agree. he really needs to get to where he's being challenged much more if he wants to make the next step.

Slightly estimating a couple of numbers, I could say that the difference between hitting the underside of the bar (and going in) and hitting dead center of the front of the bar is about 1.4 degrees.

This is going to be a great precal question next time I teach it.

Assuming no curvature of the crossbar I get 18'56". That also assumes the ball is a single point. Now I'm going to spend all night figuring it with the crossbar being round and the ball being an actual soccer ball.

I had 17.1 degrees for underside and 18.5 degrees for square on the face of the bar.

Edit: geometry, man. Trigonometric ratios of a right triangle, lol.
12 yds to the spot, 432 inches.
8 ft to the underside of the bar, 96 inches.

Angle spot to bar = arctan(96/432) = 12.53 degrees

Bar is 5 inches so middle is 2.5 inches. That makes the middle 98.5 inches and that angle 12.84 degrees, assuming it's a square crossbar.

0.31 degrees = 18.6'

Yes yes I was told there would be no math.

Yes, he needs to learn the tactical side of the game. Think he would thrive in the Dutch league as the next step in his evolution. I think for all young attackers, that's a great next stepping stone.

re: Sargent...he has a future but it's not up top. He's too athletic and understands the game well enough that he could play outside back and be effective

i think Norwich was really liking Sargent as a RWB just like Lille was really liking Weah as a RWB. We have Dest and Scally as RBs still. Lots of depth there with Cannon, Shaq Moore, Reynolds, and others too. Yedlin hasn't aged out yet.

Left back is a problem after Antonee Robinson. Dest and Scalley are capable left backs who prefer their more natural right side. Otherwise, it seems like we really only have Sam Vines and either Dejuon Jones or Tolken. Starts and playing time in this gold cup indicates that the coaches prefer Jones of Tolkin. Jones had some oh **** moments last night, but he's growing up and getting valuable minutes in this tournament.

At 9, after Balogan, Pepi, and Jesus, you still have Vasquez emerging, and have guys like Dike, who's been unlucky with fitness and injuries over the course of the past cycle, and Pefok and Haji Wright. Emerging strikers up top allows Sargent to be able to move around as a versatile player on the 25 man roster.

Norwhich has him starting at the 9 this pre-season.

Yep, Norwich unloaded Pukki and freed up the #9 position. Sargent was forced to play out wide last year due to Pukki's presence.

Ah, yeah. I rushed my math again. My wife was giving me dirty looks when I was fiddling around with that instead of doing the dishes. Shanked the conversion from 12 yds to inches.

But, I will throw this at you: if we use the center point of the ball as our reference point, and assume an 8.75" diameter, then the clean scoring area of the goal is actually only about 88 inches high. Any more height on that kick, and it's hitting the crossbar and rebounding off. Makes that angle even tighter.
