My extra assessment.....

Ayto - I don't like him. I don't know the behind the scenes details that he was dealing with but he failed to get us cover for our myriad of injuries when we were in 2nd place and within striking distance. While many have said that we didn't need bodies, I'd argue that in fact we could use atleast 1-2 bodies right now. Is there anyone on the board that feels we are better off with Merino at ST rather than Morata? Morata is "just a body" but he is an experienced ST that would have fit for 6 months and was available on loan.

Ashworth - Very skeptical. We've *****ed about Edu's ability to sell players. Ashworth seems far worse. Hard to judge his resume while including Newcastle because a lot of SDs could have built a strong squad with -400m net in 3 years.

Berta - Not my favorite option but I can see the potential given the consistently strong squad that has been top 4 every year while he has been SD. That said, outside of the 20/21 season where they won the title and this season (so far), they have also consistently been 10+ pts behind 1st place. And he left the club at the start of the Jan window. Why?

Olabe - I see a good bit of value in him and his potential to work well with Arteta. I could see KSE liking him due to his ability to profit from transfers while maintaining competitiveness. However, I question if/how he would operate differently in a larger budget club that is looking to maintain CL every year and compete for titles.

Scuro - Intrigued by his rise. Like his connections to Brazil. Like alot of what I have seen RE his philosophy. Concerned we might be a stepping stone to a "bigger" club.

Some additional info I read that may point to Berta......

- mentioned above that he left Atletico in early Jan
- supposedly moved to London to improve his English
- supposedly turned down Milan in the last week because he had agreed with another club

Also poking around on google and searched "andrea berta new club" and AI spit out the following.....

Quote:

As of February 2025, Andrea Berta is no longer employed at Atltico Madrid and has not joined a new club.

Explanation
  • Berta was the Sporting Director at Atltico Madrid for 12 years. He was appointed to the position in 2017.
  • Berta was known for his work with the club, including bringing in players like Gimenez, Oblak, Suarez, Morata, and Joao Felix.
  • He also helped the club win two La Liga titles, a Europa League, and reach two Champions League finals.
  • Berta was considered one of the best sporting directors in the world.
  • He was linked to several clubs, including Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Roma, and Everton.
  • He was also contacted by Milan, but the timing wasn't right.

Fab says we have focused in on Berta as our next SD and are in advanced talks with him

Imagine my surprise had I been told in September that the most exciting thing to discuss about Arsenal by March would be potential sporting director hires.

Generated 3-4 solid chances in the first 15 min and generally dominating possession. Hopefully we can put atleast one away before half.

This quick passing approach has to be the path forward. Far more dangerous when we are moving everything around quickly.

weak call given what should have been a foul first on PSV.

Not that Partey can complain though.

agreed but handled it wrong. let your man go and hit the ground to draw attention from the ref/VAR.

This was a new kinda dumb for him though. Typically just sticks to the bad give aways.

Exactly. The ball was played no where near the foul which makes it even worse.

MO seems to be a touch off tonight. Quick turns by him in anticipation of receiving passes are being defeated by slightly quicker feet from PSV.

I'm ready to move on from Partey. Hoping Zubi is everything Arteta is expecting.

I assume MLS was subbed to keep him from doing something stupid? Turned the game on just in time to see the Partey disaster.

Early yellow then was very lucky to not pick up a 2nd yellow.

Needs to work on that a bit. Hopefully he gets better with a little more seasoning.
