When do we start expecting the Spurs to win 65+ this year?

They have never won more than 63. That was the year they lost to Dallas in 7, '05-'06. (they were 63-19 during the regular season).

They are 34-6 now. Can they possibly keep this pace up?

It depends on of another team is challenging for the #1 seed. I could see them shutting down the veterans after they clinch.

prolly should wait till after the rodeo road trip to make these guesses.

spurs fans will be the first to complain about road trips or back to backs affecting their team's performance.

They are on pace for 70. Best overall, home, and road records in the NBA.

I do think they'll hit a slump at some point in the season. I don't think they'll shut down the vets (because they don't want to lose their edge), but their minutes will drop even more. So far they've gotten lucky with just one guy going down with injury and the teams they've played have frequently had well-timed injury troubles.

They could go through a short slump and still get 65, I just don't know that that is likely.

I could see them not doing it if for no other reason than Pop has absolutely no desire to win 70. He just doesn't care about the regular season except as preparation for the playoffs. Still, these guys are just flat out good. They have talent and are playing an incredibly disciplined game right now. They don't really have a weakness. They aren't going to lose much doing that.

Hopefully, they don't burn out trying to get to the 65 mark. It's all about the playoffs.

I do agree with Simplebay (sickening, I know) that it's still too early. Let's see where we are at the beginning on March / end of February.

Historically, the Spurs have used the rodeo road trip to launch towards playoff mode.

Back to backs have killed them, just like they do any other team. Especially when it involves travel and you rely on older players.

spurs rodeo record:
2007- 4-4
2008- 6-3
2009- 5-3
2010- 4-4

barely above .500 is not exactly "launching towards the playoffs". unless you meant like launching towards first or second-round exits. but it's certainly not on pace for 65+ wins like the OP was asking
Simplebay

last year they were 18-10 after the rodeo trip. 64% winning percentage.

if you include the 4 games they'll probably lose on the 9 game road trip, plus 64% of their remaining after (17 wins, 9 losses), games if last year's "launching" was any indication...

that puts their record at 56 wins with 7 possible wins best-case before the road trip. right now they are 34-6 for 85% win percentage. that means statistically they should lose 1 out of the 7 games.

so, based on last year's pretty average "historical rodeo playoff launch", 63 wins seems stretching it, much less 65+. so actually the smarter argument to make would be how they are NOT going to do what they "historically" do in order to get 65+ wins.

so, statistically....64 wins this year. if you round in the Spurs favor.

yes, because last year's spurs have an uncanny resemblance to this year's spurs...do you ever get tired of typing the b.s. that comes from that peanut sized ball of nerves inside your skull?
Ulrich

I believe it's post all-star break that the Spurs have typically turned it up a notch. Rodeo road trip is before all-star weekend.

simplegay also left out some info of note...here's how the last 8 rodeo road trips have worked out for the spurs:

8-1 record during trip, finish reg season 12-2, title

6-1 record during trip, finish reg season 13-1, .04 fisher

5-2 record during trip, 6-1 stretch after trip, won title

6-2 record during trip, 13-2 record after trip, manu stupidly fouls eventual finals choker Dirk at end of regulation

start 13 game win streak and go 25-6 to end season (resting players the last 2 losses), breeze through Bron for another title

start an 11 game win streak only to halfway fall apart and lose to LA in conference finals

did nothing while manu watched from the sidelines, waxed by dallas in the first round

9-2 record following road trip, 2nd round sweep by a phoenix team that could not miss a shot for a week

But like I said, this team doesn't even resemble those teams anyway. They are way too fresh at this point in the season.

ahh yes, because stats from the past 4 seasons are less relevant than the 4 seasons before that.

my stats are correct, and are more relevant info than your stats. it doesn't matter what the spurs did in 2004.

but maybe i'm wrong and you and GS arguing the opposing view means they WILL get 65+ games.

.....a feat that has never been accomplished in the history of the Spurs organization.

in fact in the past 15 years, the spurs have only cracked the 60-win mark twice. but i'm sure you're right.

So your Lakers lost a "road" game on their "home" court today. Crazy.

It will be interesting to see what their record is after the rodeo trip. If they still have the best record after that, then start up the talk.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Spurs could lose 5 straight while the rest of the top teams win all their games and they would still have the best record in the west. They would have to have a pretty big collapse to lose their lead in a 9-game span or whatever it is.

Hollinger's projected record for the Spurs, given their current performance to date and their future schedule, is 64-18. Sounds about right to me.

Go ahead and name the '4 probable losses' for us simplebay.

blazers
lakers
kings
pistons
raptors
76ers
wizards
nets
bulls

I couldn't care less about how many wins the Spurs get, as long as they

1-finish with the #1 seed
2-stay healthy.

60 or 70 wins makes no difference to me. If you've got the top seed locked up, empty the bench, by all means.

That said, I don't think the gap between the Spurs and Lakers will get much bigger. Can't relax yet.

I'd like an answer on this one as well...

sure i'll take a stab at it....

blazers, lakers, bulls, sixers

those are the losses I think the spurs take. luckily, the spurs' back-to-back games are very weak teams

Disagree a bit shark- 60 wins is not a big deal, but 70 would be epic. Of course you wouldn't want to end up like the "undefeated" Patriots a few years back.
MassAggie97

Personally I think 70 wins is already off the table. 70 wins means they've got to go 37-4 in the 2nd half of an NBA season. Ain't gonna happen.

Forget injuries, which are bound to happen. Even healthy I don't think the Spurs could pull that off. It is a long season, and you still have 3 games against LA (2 on the road), a game at home against Boston, 2 games against the Heat, one at Dallas, etc. etc.

If the Spurs end up with 70 wins just hand them the trophy.

That would make it 72-10. They need to match their record of 35-6 in the second half to make it to 70.

Not that I think it's gonna happen, either.
