Just read this article, that is three minutes of wasted time, ridiculous article written by someone who has a very rudimentary knowledge of san antonio.

Lots of spurs fans in Austin down the street. Are they considered in the san Antonio market?

The only part of that article that is "spot on" is the brilliant deduction that Duncan and Ginobili are in the their final few years. The rest is garbage.

Why? Because if you look closely you'll see that the Spurs have actually done a very good job of rebuilding young. Duncan and Manu are the only old guys on the team now. Parker is in his prime at around 30, that's not old. The team is fun to watch and Spurs fan appreciate that. We like winning at all times, even in the regular season. There were a lot of winning seasons before the Spurs finally won a championship and it may be many more before the next one. But that doesn't mean it's "sad", it's just basketball.

Austin is definitely considered a Spurs market, as we only get their games on FSS and they seem to be local pro sports franchise of choice by most local businesses. However, Austin is not part of San Antonio's metropolis, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find many Austinites who would go so far as to get Season tickets considering the commute to SA for the games. Not saying there aren't some but they'd have to be the most hardcore fans.

Plenty of Mavs fans around Austin too though. I got tons of compliments on my Mavs jerseys and t-shirts last year during the Finals.

The West is wide-open this year and I think the Spurs are deeper than last year's #1 seed Spurs. Splitter is getting better adding depth and the Neal/Green/Leonard/Ginobili G rotation is going to be awesome. There is no denying they are riding on Duncan fumes at this point, but with a Pop-coached team you can't count them out. I have hope, just like I did last year, and just like any fan would.

That article actually angered me, in that I just wasted 3 minutes reading that piece of drivel. And that's coming from a Mavs fan who hates the Spurs.

San Antonio will be just fine. The guy makes the Spurs out to be a team that just happened upon success and has maintained it through a series of role players. The fact of the matter is guys with the skillsets of Bowen, Neal, Hill, etc are a dime a dozen in any given year. And yet, the Spurs somehow almost always find the guys that fit their system and philosophy almost perfectly. That's no coincidence. The reality of things is that even though San Antonio may be a small market, they have one of the best front offices, coaching staffs, and loyal fan bases in the NBA. The players will always come and go. The intangibles of the Spurs organization will help ensure their relevance for years to come.

^The Rockets have a terrific and active front office and owner. And even though they're currently in the playoff race, I don't think anyone in Houston is going to argue the importance of having a marquee superstar to build around given the players currently on the roster.

So yeah, I think Tim Duncan has a little to do with San Antonio's success over the past 15 years.

He is the best in the league today. Absolutely.

I think it's unfair for me to claim he is the best ever. I don't know much about the coaches before this era. But then again I claim Duncan to be the greatest PF of all time. So...

best coach ever?

oh, and this is the only way to determine it:

#1. Phil Jackson
#2. Pat Riley
#3. Lenny Wilkens
#4. Billy Donovan
#5. Gregg Popolzitz
#6. Doc Rivers
#7. Rick Carlise
#8. Charles Barkley
#9. Don Nelson
#10. Damon Stoudemire

it doesn't get any more definitive.

What are you 12?

I agree that Phil Jackson is probably the best coach of all time, but anyone that has followed basketball for the past 10 to 15 years knows that Pop has done more with much less. You put Pop on the sideline with the Bulls teams of the 90's and they win just as many championships.

Not quite saying Pop is the better coach, but he's darn close. If Pop can win a couple more with the Spurs, I'd say he's on the same level as Phil.

I'd be curious to see which of the two has a better winning percentage. Anyone wanna look into that?

After 09-10:

Phil Jackson .705
Billy Cunningham .698
K.C. Jones .674
Gregg Popovich .670
Red Auerbach .662
Pat Riley .636
Tom Heinsohn .619
Rick Adelman .610
Jerry Sloan .604
George Karl .595

Pop up to .675 after last year. Will be interesting to see how close he can get to .700 before retirement.

That pretty much sums it up. The SA area isn't necessarily "small," just not nearly as big as some of the other markets. When you start talking Houston, Dallas, LA, NY, Boston, Chicago, Miami, etc. --you start to realize that SA doesn't really compete with those areas from a market standpoint.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Im also a Mavs fans who that thinks that article was lame.

I post on the RealGm board and the amount of East Coast bias on a lot of the national basketball boards is sickening.

The Spurs have been a 50 win team for 19 out of 21 years......that is insane good.

san antonio is the 7th largest city in the US

As others have mentioned you must go by Metro Area and San Antonio is one of the smallest metro areas in the NBA.
