That analysis from Simmons is ridiculous. You're going to penalize Karl in the playoffs for losing to a Jordan-led Bulls team and Lakers team which ended up winning it all?

Using Shawn Kemp, Ray Allen and Carmelo Anthony as arguments for Karl going further in the playoffs? Shawn Kemp was a nutcase, Ray Allen was never a tier 1 superstar and had to latch on to two other teams for title runs, and Carmelo Anthony is ****ing Carmelo Anthony.

The fact that he was able to coach any team with Shawn Kemp, Carmelo Anthony, Allen Iverson, JaVale McGee, J.R. Smith, etc. to any level of success should qualify him for a Nobel Prize.

spoelstra in the top five? i could coach the heat, too. "hey, lebron. you're a freak of nature and basically unstoppable. go do whatever the **** you feel like"

boom. 60 wins and the east bid to the finals.

The key to the Heats success is granny shot knock out and 3 man weave. A good coach would recognize that and Spoelstra did. So you saying he isn't a top 5 coach is ridiculous
Ulrich

Lebron James probably does more in-game coaching than Spoelstra. Spoelstra is just the front man.

to derail this thread further, Bill Simmons ranks his top 4 coaches (in no order):
quote:
The best four coaches in basketball are Gregg Popovich, Rick Carlisle, Erik Spoelstra and Doc Rivers in some order.

P.S. whoever says Pop isn't the best coach in basketball is an idiot

Nice little segment on TNT (post-Spurs game), of Karl getting the award. Talked about losing his friend, Rick Majerus, and his family.

George Karl has the longest current streak of non-losing seasons (21) and is tied with Phil Jax for longest in league history, but he probably deserves some kind of award for putting up with that roster that had Allen Iverson, Carmello, Birdman, JR Smith, and Kenyon Martin on it.

I was going to put this in the playoffs threads, but this should be a factor in Coach of the Year discussions. Not really sure what thread it should be in.

As a lad, Frank Vogel was on Stupid Human tricks (David Letterman) in the 80s for spinning a basketball on a toothbrush while he brushes teeth.

And he can still do the trick (video from Wish for Our Heros party) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izmjGMx0vC4

I think Thibs is in the discussion for best coach in the NBA. I also can't watch Memphis without being amazed with how well they are coached And how perfect and cohesive their defense is.

I do think Spolestra is a good coach. He designed his offense to work with 3 stars (something LA has proven is not simple) maximizing their talents and their defense is really well coached. Its not just individual efforts by LeBron, you can tell they execute a well defined strategy at a high level.

I thought Tyson was exposed as an overrated media darling when he won dpoy but couldn't get the coaches to vote him 1st team all-defense last year? Now the coaches are in on it too.

Parker only playing 80% of the season hurts him. I can see an argument for Westbrook.

I would probably put Westbrook in over both Paul and Parker. Kobe deserves his 1st Team spot this year. That team was in disarray.

Though, I guess you can argue the same thing for Paul since he was playing for Vinny Del Negro who managed to get fired twice despite having coached two of the best four point guards in the league.
