I'm too young to remember Thurman munsons death and wasn't born when Roberto Clemente died but Munsons death had a weird impact on my dad.

He is from Boston and never really a Yankees fan but after Munsons death he was shaken. My dad was a crash scene investigator for the NTSB and saw a lot of bad stuff through that but Munsons death during his prime shook him up. We see these guys as being larger than life and invincible and when we find out they're human, it shocks us.

Comparing a b list actor to one of the greatest of all time??? If the car actor hadn't of died a lot wouldn't have known who he was. Maybe you should have prefaced it with "for me it was....."

This is the saddest day in the history of basketball. Still in disbelief.

If the individual teams wants to retire it, that's fine. League-wide would be a bad knee jerk reaction.

Everybody knew who paul walker was, but it was more about how his death occurred . Random and out of place

I'm pretty sure the poster meant because of the manner of death - the person's body burning inside the crash site. Maybe you could take the judging down a notch.

We could just clean it up ourselves if we went back to the subject of the thread

Still doesn't feel real to be honest. You have a whole generation of players that probably had Kobe as an idol.

It's co-opting the slights of another person for your own personal gain, generally to a degree greater than those that it directly impacted. Being mournful of the loss of a person that loomed large in your industry is not virtue signaling.

Throughout his career Kobe attempted to get Dirk to join him in LA and also briefly considered a trade to the Mavericks, because he loved the way Dirk worked/played. There's a bond there between Cuban and Kobe because of that, and that's why Cuban wanted to "retire" Kobe's number.

Mavs retiring 24 makes no sense.

Its virtue signaling.
The Hawks retired Jordan's #. It speaks a hell of a lot about Mark Cuban's character to recognize the impact Kobe had on the league and to honor that impact appropriately.

The Hawks retired Jordan's number for Lou Hudson

You telling someone else to grow up? That's rich. I don't even know who you are but based on this thread you should probably not be talking.

I'd say maybe a bit rash driven by emotion and respect. Virtue signaling characterization is nonsense. GTFO with that nonsense. You are embarrassing yourself.

I'd also suggest the Malice at the Palace was a pretty sad day in basketball history

I get it's an internet message board so there are always counterpoints and alternative examples, but none of those really compare to a top 10 player of all-time and his daughter dying in a helicopter crash.

This.

How about we stop with the name calling and arguing and instead keep the focus of this thread on an NBA legend and his daughter losing their lives in a tragic accident.

Hoss, of you pay close enough attention to the kind of individuals that make these comments after people lost their lives you'll see that the "Politics" board is typically the first or second most visited form. They are trash that just enjoys a good debate at any costs. Pay no mind to these infected brains.

I'm sure I was like most mavs fans - the late 90s to 2011 was all about Dirk, Duncan and Kobe.

If I wasn't arguing with Spurs fans, it was with the odd lakers fan in Texas about Kobe's place or how if Dirk would've had more help he would've had more ships.

All pretty irrelevant to me but those arguments I had with those fans - amongst beers and school lunches depending on age - stuck in my mind the most. Friends I haven't talked to in YEARS came to head immediately because of this.

To me, actors and musicians dying aren't the same. They are artists and depression and drugs are associated with these individuals so random deaths to these individuals seems like it is almost inevitable - to me anyway. A health freak and workaholic like Kobe should not have this happen to him. He is missing out on the rest of his life being retired and commenting on all the greats that will be there for the future. Also cant forget his role as a father.

I can't think of a more shocking, impactful celebrity death in my lifetime. Maybe Princess Diana? I'm not sure anything else comes close to this.

I was way too young for Diana and even now I couldn't care less about the royal family. No other celebrity life has been impactful to me.

When I woke up and opened up the news and saw Kobe had died, my first thought was "there's another Kobe out there that died or it must be fake news" and I thought I was still asleep and just dreaming. I've never had that feeling ever before. It was weird and not an exaggeration. (I live in a timezone out of the US.)

I was still able to enjoy my day. Go about my life. No problem. But never felt like that before. I don't think it's right to have your life be that distraught with a celebrity death but sports in bring good memories. And these people have qualities outside of being athletic that should be celebrated.

I can only imagine how much worse it would be for me when an actual family member/friend I'm close to passes away.
