It brings up some questions about the Rangers.
I don't think Garza goes for less than 3 years. Rangers can't lock into 3 years with Garza. Holland and recent trades show how quickly pitching can go from a strength to a weakness, for sure. However, looking at who is available as FA (as of now) after the 2014 season... you can't overpay today, if you don't have to (the Yankees and Cubs have to).
Tepesch, Colby and Harrison are 3 options.
- Darvish + Perez would seem like safe and solid. I expect bumps from Perez, for sure. Hopefully no great sophomore slump.
- Ogando behind Darvish\Perez\Holland looks like a solid addition. Even with a questionable 5th. Without Holland... I start to question reliance on Perez and Ogando.. and then whomever is 5th.
Ogando is adamant about being SP, from what I've read. I like that.
I view Colby as a mid-season minor league call-up. Holland won't be of value until 2015. No idea on Harrison.
FWIW - Ross and Scheppers both stretched out during the winter.
I think we go to ST with:
Darvish-Perez-Ogando-Tepesch- Ross/Scheppers
Two months of Ross\Scheppers like we got from Grimm\Tep in 2013, could go a long way. Then, if Colby, Harrison, Luke Jackson can go a month or two after that... we're into June\July and the trade deadline. If we are in need then, we can look at deadline deals and if there are as many options as it might appear... we might find an affordable option.
After that... we have about 1 SP we add each year - Tepesch should settle in for 2014, Luke Jackson in 2015, Alex Gonzalez...2016?
I think they should go after a FA SP after 2014.
