See this? Holy cats! Papelbon's always had a hot blooded streak, but I've never seen anything like this before!

I agree with Pap.
Harper should have ran it out regardless.
When a veteran gives you advice, you shut up and listen.

Not when the veteran is a psychopath like Pap. You don't call him out while he's on the field and put your hands around his throat in the dugout. Harper should run out ground balls, but Papelbon in no way did anything correct in this situation.

Feels like pitcher's shouldn't be giving "advice" to hitters.

They both seem like dewsh bags and both are wrong in this instance. Harper should've hustled and Papelbon should've let a position player talk to Harper in the clubhouse away from cameras/reporters.

I haven't seen the play that led to this. But Harper has already earned the right to not hustle if he feels the need. He's already a veteran who has accomplished a lot at his young age. And I'm not a fan of his attitude.

Not hustling is never acceptable. Unless maybe you're not 100% healthy and you're only out there to help the team.

Is it the guy who pitches maybe one inning every game or 2's job to tell him that?

this is all on Papelbon -- he is a rental. He's doesn't get to talk.

and as previously posted...this is Harper's 4th year in the majors -- he's not a rookie -- he's a veteran. And gets to do whatever he wants

What a tool.

Even better that he got rocked and was pulled.

Matt Williams sending Papelbon back out there to pitch after this happened is, without doubt, the single dumbest thing I've ever seen a manager do in a baseball game.

Papelbon has more All-Star appearances than Harper has seasons in the league.

More playoff appearances than seasons. More rings. Holds the career saves leader for two teams. More virtually everything. Papelbon is the veteran here. (Although he certainly didn't carry himself as one in this instance.)

I'm curios to know what Harper said back to him.

It had to be significant.

Again, I didn't watch the play that led to this. These guys play 162 games in ~180 days. There are times when it's okay to not hustle. Harper is the epitome of hustle. I'll give him a break without even watching the play.

Unless he got the result he wanted. The Nats were already eliminated from the race. Maybe it was to humiliate him. In which case it worked.

Obviously, you don't watch the Astros a lot...

Nats owe him 11M next year. Maybe they'd be willing to take a discounted trade offer or take on part his salary in trade if they want to appease their star player. Astros need bullpen help.

Cubs need bullpen help too but I want no part of Papelbon. He's had issues before. He's not good enough to risk the clubhouse issues he may very well bring with him.

Interesting to see what everyone's definition of not hustling is.

He hit a pop up and ran 3/4ths speed to first base. That's pretty standard fare in the big leagues.

Now if it was a ground out or he didn't even make it to first base, OK... That's bad.

This was Papelbon looking to be an ass, and it was pretty obvious.

Eh... Looks like pretty standard ML fare for a pop-up.

Well I'll be damned - looks like it is indeed possible for me and mhayden to agree on something

Agreed...wonder if something happened earlier in the game or something to set Papel off...

Read something somewhere today that broke it down. Basically Harper kinda-sorta threw Papelbon under the bus about hitting a guy that hit a homerun off of him (Harper basically questions the whole "oh you hit a homerun, fine I'm going to bean you next at-bat" process)... As far as that topic goes, not sure what side I'm on. I think it's stupid, but I also miss "the good ole days" where opposing players didn't like each other and if you got too close to the plate you were going to get knocked on your ass.

My guess is Papelbon took offense to Harper kinda of throwing him under the bus in regards to that, and was looking for a reason to call him out and this was one of the rare times Papelbon was actually in the dugout during a Harper at-bat (he's usually not brought in until the 9th inning) so he had to find something/anything.

If I know Arte Moreno, and I think I do, then Papelbon will be wearing an Angels uniform next year and causing problems and being another failed LAA pickup.

Papelbon is a giant tool that is pretty much universally disliked in baseball

And it started with Papelbon's bush league beaning of Machado from the other day.

And as mhayden stated, Harper was running just fine on that play.

Papelbon is a moron and should've gotten his ass kicked. And I wish he'd get a chance to bat one day. Easy for closers to be "tough guys"

Also, he's been there for two months... he doesn't get to call out the MVP
